WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Second-half defense leads Cards to win

After allowing 45 points in the first 20 minutes Sunday against Kent State University, Ball State University coach Tracy Roller knew her team needed to pick up its defensive effort in the second half. That's precisely what the Cardinals did, holding Kent State to 24 points on 33 percent shooting en route to a 74-69 home victory.

OUR VIEW: Continued connections

There aren't many students at Ball State University who can say they didn't go through Freshman Connections, the university-sponsored program that acclimates freshmen into college life. Think back, and it's likely some of your friendships were a direct result of the program.

THE O REPORT: Writing exam needs change

Passing the Writing Competency Exam is a graduation requirement for all Ball State University students. Though the examination is justified as a necessary means of assessing student performance and knowledge, the current format is flawed. Two of Ball State's four post players were injured and the other two were saddled by foul trouble throughout the contest.

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL CYNIC: Grab the ice scraper, tough out the cold

don't know if you've noticed or not, but it is extremely cold outside. There's no denying that cold weather is one of the drawbacks of living in the Midwest, and one of the banes of college life. With cold weather comes snow and ice. And as pretty and as fun as a good snowfall is to look at, it certainly comes with its own set of drawbacks.

THE SCENIC ROUTE: Do not let conspiracies fool you

here's a sucker born every minute, and most of them have Web connections. Case in point: An Internet video, "Loose Change," purports to prove 9/11 was an inside job orchestrated by the government. (Where the name came from, I have no idea.) It was put together by three young men who, no doubt, think themselves very brave for speaking truth to power, or something like that.

TRACK: Cards ready for smaller competition

Overshadowed by the size and competition of last weeks Meyo Invitational at the University Notre Dame, the Anderson Invitational will be less of a challenge for the Ball State University women's track and field team. OUR VIEW: A kosher alternative

During Passover of 2006, the university attempted to provide kosher-style food to students but botched the plan by including bread products in the menu. In years prior, on-campus students with Jewish beliefs were left with few options in dining halls, period.
