WHO, ME?: Hope springs eternal for Chicago fans

It's October, and the Cubs are still alive. That alone is cause for celebration on the north side of Chicago, as the Cubs are in the playoffs for the third time in nine years, matching their total postseason berths from the previous 34 years. No matter that the Cubs have the worst playoff record of any of the postseason teams.



Ball State reopens Mitchell Place Studio

A $20 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc., made it possible to fund the Ball State University Center for Media Design's reopening of Mitchell Place Studio. Ball State President Jo Ann Gora gave opening remarks at the downtown Muncie business' opening on Wednesday.

You may have seen the signs up around campus over the past couple of weeks, or the banners strung across McGalliard Avenue. They all advertised the "Silencing of God" seminar: a series of talks about the withering roots of America's past and its disappearing values.


Watermelon Bust set for Sunday

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards named to All-MAC team

After breaking the school record for winning percentage and tying the record for conference wins last season, the Ball State University women's basketball team is continuing to break records even before this season begins. For the first time since Tracy Roller became the head coach in 2001, two Cardinals were named to the Preseason All-Mid-American Conference Team.



Authors to speak at Bracken Library

The Alexander M. Bracken Library will host a lecture today featuring the authors of "Books on Trial: Red Scare in the Heartland." John Straw, assistant dean for digital initiatives and special collections for Ball State University Libraries, said the lecture will take place at 7:30 p.


Marketing campaign is underway

Ball State University began a marketing campaign, which included advertisements on TV and in high school publications, to help recruit prospective freshman for next year. Al Rent, director of relationship marketing and communications, said Ball State spends about $1 million on advertisements during the year.


Students approve of redesign

Some students didn't even know Ball State University had redesigned its Web site until Monday when the new site launched, and they liked what they saw, said University Web Coordinator Nancy Prater. Prater said she received more than 300 e-mails expressing a positive reaction to the site.


Students register to vote

Ball State University student political organizations came together this week to promote the importance of voting. Shawn Meier, chairman of governmental affairs and student awareness for the Student Government Association, said University Democrats and College Republicans ran registration tables Wednesday and Thursday in the Atrium.



Senators work on issues

After two weeks of parliamentary procedure and new Senate orientation, the Ball State University Student Government Association got back to regular business Wednesday. The Senators met in their caucuses and committees to discuss what things needed to be addressed and to update the rest of SGA about the progress of ideas presented in earlier sessions.


FOOTBALL: Freshman promoted to No. 2 running back

In an attempt to maintain a dual-running back system, Ball State University coach Brady Hoke said he has decided to promote freshman running back Koreen Burch to the backup role. Burch was a fifth-string cornerback before being moved to third-string running back before the Cardinals' game against the University at Buffalo.

That's why a crew of determined residents and Ball State University students are hitting the streets today to make a preemptive strike on the downtown litter problem before the weekend begins.


BEWILDERED SOCIETY: Web site just marketing tool

To the dismay of some Ball State University community members, "Education Redefined" also means "Web site Redesigned." After at least a year of behind-the-scenes work, Ball State unleashed its updated Web site to the public Monday. The redesigned bsu.edu might look pretty, but it's not functional for university students, faculty and staff.



WOMEN'S GOLF: Coach happy despite 7th place

After the women's golf team's worst finish of the season, coach Katherine Mowat wasn't at all disappointed in her team Monday. The Ball State University women's golf team shot a 35-over-par 323 in the final round of the Nittany Lion Invitational to finish the 56-hole tournament in seventh place out of 14 teams.


Volunteers pass out brochures in near-campus neighborhoods

Off-campus residents in neighborhoods around the area received brochures about community resources and landlord information Tuesday from Ball State University Campus Community Coalition and other volunteers. Campus Community Coalition representative Lisa Thomason said about 40 volunteers showed up, representing groups such as Ball State Student Affairs, greek life, Central High School, the University Area Landlord Association and the city of Muncie.


NetMRI to assist Ball State

About $40,000 was spent for an addition to the network management system called NetMRI. It was made possible thanks to Ball State University's computing services. Senior Enterprise Network Engineer Daniel Fortriede said the system involves behind-the-scenes products important to network technicians, but not about finding viruses or trojan programs.


Ball State receives $2.5 million

Ball State University faculty succeeded in securing a $2.5 million grant to improve communications during emergencies. Tom Morrison, associate vice president for business affairs, said U.S. Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency provided Ball State with the national grant after faculty members participated in a competitive proposal process.


Campus group to give out brochures

The Campus Community Coalition will hand out information about community resources door-to-door to off-campus residents Tuesday. The purpose of the project is to improve relationships between students who live off campus and permanent residents, Lisa Thomason said.


Organization hosts voter registration drive in Atrium
