Library to have scholarship presentation

Ball State University students interested in learning about study abroad scholarships are encouraged to attend a presentation today about the types of aid available through the National Security Education Program, Barb Stedman, director of national and international scholarships, said.



OBJECTIONABLE MATERIAL: Muncie needs safer walkways along streets

The lyrics of Frank Zappa's 1974 song "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow" describing "trudging across the tundra, mile after mile" might sound prophetic for Muncie residents who lack cars as the harsh, snowy Midwestern winter approaches. Too many of Muncie's thoroughfares lack sidewalks - particularly Tillotson, McGalliard, Wheeling and West Bethel avenues - and the city should consider building them.


Students compete in ark building contest

Pruis Hall was flooded with a sea of popsicle-stick arks before the screening of "Evan Almighty" this weekend at Friday Night Filmworks. William Merkel, vice president of finance for Ball State University Programs Board, said the organization had the contest to accompany the movie's theme.


OUR VIEW: Celebrate

Here comes the kick-off, and it looks like it's going to be good. No, not a football game but Homecoming 2007, which is officially here. This is a huge Homecoming for Ball State University; not only is our football team doing better than usual (despite Saturday's disappointing loss), but the entire campus has undergone a makeover and is receiving national attention.


FOOTBALL: LeFevour sickens Cardinals defense

Many people coming into Saturday's game between Ball State University and Central Michigan University viewed the game as a battle of quarterbacks - Dan LeFevour versus Nate Davis round two. Round one took place last year in Central Michigan. The Chippewas won 18-7, on the legs of their quarterback.



Spectrum hosts drag show for charity

As one performer smoothed her fourth pair of pantyhose while she struggled to pull them over her calves as the smell of sweet, floral hairspray filled the air, another doused her teased, brown hair and twisted her curls. Across the mirrored room, another performer touched up her eyeshadow and asked her friend "Does that look good?" "Yes," the friend replied, "that looks natural.


SPEAK SOFTLY: People should take advantage of free speech

A phenomena seems to have come over the campus of Ball State University in recent weeks and it deserves note. The political apathy of years past appears, at least to this casual observer, to have given way to a politically motivated and active campus. It's needless to say very exciting and not to mention encouraging.


Flavors of fall

Minnetrista's Orchard Shop Courtyard was transformed into a feast for the fall-lover's eyes - and mouth - with a cornucopia of seasonal decorations, place settings and sustainable gourmet prepared dishes at Minnetrista's first Flavors of Fall outdoor dinner event.


Muncie gets artsy

Ball State University students, faculty and Muncie residents got in touch with their inner artists Thursday at ArtsWalk, a downtown event showcasing creative endeavors. Curious art fans lined Walnut and Main streets, ducking in galleries, restaurants and other local businesses to see what was on display.

Sales competition to be in MCOB

The Ball State University will host a regional sales competition today on the third floor of the Whittenger Business Building. Scott Inks, associate professor of marketing, said the University of Louisville, Indiana, Purdue and Ball State universities will be the four competitors in the event.


Author speaks about effects of censorship

Censorship in the 1940s was linked to modern-day concerns at Thursday's lecture about the book "Books on Trial: Red Scare in the Heartland" in Bracken Library. About 35 students and 10 faculty attended the lecture. Shirley Wiegand spoke about the recently published book, which she wrote with her husband, and about the dangers of censorship.


FOOTBALL: Cardinals confident in quarterback

With the early-season success Ball State University's football team has experienced in 2007, many fans have built expectations of postseason greatness, including a possible Mid-American Conference Championship. Cardinals' coach Brady Hoke knows in order to make a run at the title, his team will need to take care of business within the MAC West Division.



WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards try to maintain streak

The Ball State University women's volleyball team has a two-match win streak, and it will look to make that a four match streak this weekend with two matches in Worthen Arena. "Its going to be fun to see our team playing with new found excitement and confidence after two wins last weekend," coach Dave Boos said.


SGA, Doc's to clean downtown

In a cooperation between Student Government Association Treasurer Zac Davis and Doc's Music Hall owner Mike Martin, downtown Muncie will become a little cleaner. Davis said the effort was to continue relations between Ball State and the Muncie community. "When some students get on the Late Loop drunk, they go downtown and trash the place," he said, "and that makes some merchants afraid more problems could happen.


Student involved in accident

A Ball State University student suffered minor injuries after his van rolled over in a single-car accident Tuesday. The Delaware County Sheriff's Department confirmed there was an accident on Indiana 67 near Williamson Road at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. Sophomore Josh Campbell said he was driving alone to his on-campus job at about 7:30 a.


Professor begins meditation classes

Anybody who feels the need to relax can sign up for music-centered meditation classes. Class instructor George Wolfe said the classes begin 7:15 p.m. Thursday in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Room 306. Thursday's class will introduce the form of meditation to students, Wolfe said.


Drag show to raise money for charity

Spectrum will host its semi-annual drag show Saturday to raise money for charity. Event organizer Tyler Crain said the show is 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. in Ball Gymnasium. Admission is free, but performers will take donations, Crain said. Audience members can tip performers, and all the proceeds will go to charity, he said.


Students place second in competition

A team of six Ball State University students is $1,500 richer after winning second place at a national sales competition. Team adviser Scott Inks said the tobacco company Philip Morris USA sponsored the competition, which was Friday at Indiana University.


Four students show for clean up

While picking up cigarette butts and other garbage, Student Government Association treasurer Zac Davis, said he was optimistic about the student turnout for the cleanup event his organization sponsored. Four students, all SGA members, mustered Wednesday afternoon to participate in the clean up of downtown Muncie.
