Storm fails to stop holiday celebrations

Thirteen inches of snow, below-freezing temperatures and layers upon layers of clothing are not what most people would consider romantic. However, Ball State University students and local businesses said they are not too worried about bad weather affecting their Valentine's Day plans.



SPEAK SOFTLY: Job loss hurts local economy

Borg Warner has announced that 780 people will be losing their jobs by the year 2009. This is certainly terrible for the people who worked there as well as their families. Those who lose good jobs suffer financially as well as emotionally. America's economy has been going through major changes over the past few years.


WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals travel in snow, leave Toledo in the cold

With more than three minutes remaining in Wednesday's game at the University of Toledo, Julie DeMuth caught a Kiley Jarrett entry pass in the low post and put in an off-balance layup, drawing a Rocket foul in the process. The junior forward converted the three-point play, giving DeMuth her 26th point of the game.


University shuttles will run after noon

Ball State University shuttle busses will be running after noon today, according to Tony Proudfoot, University Communications director.


Snow emergency continues until 6 a.m.

The Delaware County Commissioners, Highway Superintendent and others in the field have decided to keep the snow emergency in effect until 6 a.m. Thursday. The decision to keep the snow emergency until Thursday is to restrict unnecessary travel on county roads and allow the County Highway Department to continue plowing their work.



Officers brought in to assist motorists

Tuesday's blizzard left state and county roads covered in dangerous amounts of snow and ice, according to an Indiana State Police report. Mile marker 59 on Interstate 69 in Grant County was closed at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday after a semi-tractor with two trailers jack-knifed and rolled onto its side, blocking both southbound lanes, according to reports.


Courtside, Bookmark Cafe closed today

Courtside dining hall and the Bookmark Cafe closed Wednesday, but all other dining halls remained open. Courtside staff had difficulty getting into work because of road conditions, Jon Lewis, director of campus dining services, said. Bookmark Cafe closed because of low customer counts and the staff was needed elsewhere.


Muncie suffers little damage after blizzard

After Tuesday's blizzard, Muncie remained relatively unscathed, said Brian Lipscomb, sheriff's captain for Delaware County Emergency Management. There weren't any reports of severe property damage, and there wasn't an unusual number of traffic accidents, he said.

PARKING SERVICES: Department offers free motorist help

The Ball State University Department of Public Safety operates Motorist Assist Program. It is a free service, but motorists must sign a waiver that states the university will not be held liable for any vehicle damage. The service offers: Jump start Unlocking of vehicle doors Air in tires (vehicle and bike) Transportation to buy gas De-icer for frozen locks Shovel and abrasives for vehicles stuck on snow or ice The service is offered on a first-come, first-serve basis.


If you've got it, flaunt it

During a five-month stretch, Noah Aberlin will have traveled over 14,000 miles visiting 14 states and four Canadian provinces, some for only one night. Aberlin, a member of the chorus and assistant stage manager for the forthcoming show, "The Producers," doesn't see much of those cities - usually a hotel and the theater, and, if he's lucky, a late-night dining venue.

Snow days rarely occur in a collegiate environment, but this week it happened twice. Students and faculty spent their Wednesday digging out vehicles and clearing pathways through more than a foot of snow. Although night classes still met Wednesday, some people found their travel inhibited.


Lane owner pushes for free bowling, billiards

Cardinal Lanes has high hopes that Ball State University will approve a plan that will offer free bowling and billiards to all students. Cardinal Lanes manager Scott Evans said free bowling and billiards could be made possible by adding $5 to every student's tuition for each semester.

Muncie sees third largest snowfall in 60 years; 1950 blizzard worse

Tuesday's blizzard blanketed Muncie in its third largest snowfall in the past 60 years, according to the National Weather Service. Muncie received between 10.5 and 11 inches of snow, with it getting as deep as 13 inches in nearby Alexandria and Winchester, Logan Johnson, a meteorologist at the NWS in Indianapolis said.

Through 11 museum "exhibits," "The Colored Museum" reflects on the blacks' experience from slavery to modern day. The George C. Wolfe play uses satire to explore black stereotypes and modern views on black history. "The Colored Museum" confronts issues from homosexuality to Vietnam.

University closes; Classes canceled until 5 p.m.

'Terri Dreams' receives award

More than 70 Ball State University students worked together to bring "The Terri Dreams" to life, winning seniors Adam Hicks and Nicholas Johnson Ball State's Creativity + Innovation award for February. Hicks and Johnson masterminded, produced and directed the project, which was a combination of live acting, music and a movie.
