Fraternity holds open-mic poetry readings

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. is doing open-mic poetry reading in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Forum Room from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. As an added twist, an artist will sketch what each poet says during the readings, event organizer Paul Best said. The poetry reading is part of the fraternity's first week of events in six years, he said.

Vote Bare proud of campaign despite loss

An excited and lively crowd of Vote Bare supporters fell silent as Matt Bare held his cell phone, awaiting the Student Government Association election results. The silence continued as he hung up the phone and announced Vote Bare had lost the election by fewer than 300 votes.


BSU gets $2 million painting

n a close race for Student Government Association executive slate, U.N.I.T.E.D. Initiative won with 2,166 votes versus Vote Bare's 1,868 votes. In comparing this election to those of years past, three points arise that give hope for future elections. First, this year's voter turnout was the second highest in 10 years.

he Ball State University women's basketball team gave the university more than a Mid-American Conference West Championship with their 74-73 win over Eastern Michigan Saturday. They can be credited with rejuvenating pride in Ball State athletics, at least until the next championship is won.


BSU goes eco-friendly

The Ball State University Bookstore is trying to improve the environment by selling recycled products and offering blue bags. Bookstore manager Ron Sorrell said that although the store already carries some products similar to the recycled goods, it wants to give students more environmentally friendly choices.


Split personality

After 40 years in show business, Vicki Lawrence is still making the comedy rounds. The spunky actress, singer and comedian will perform in "Vicki Lawrence and Mama: A Two-Woman Show" at 7:30 p.m. today in Emens Auditorium. A native of suburban Hollywood, Lawrence was involved in as many performance arts organizations as she could join.



WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Final regular-season game important for BSU

After earning the Mid-American Conference West Division championship and a first-round bye in the conference tournament, hardware is not up for grabs in Ball State University's last regular-season game. However, for a team that finds itself on the proverbial March bubble like the Cardinals (21-5, 12-3 MAC), every game seems to build in importance.


Conference focuses on emergency safety

The next time an ice storm hits or something goes wrong, turn to a cellphone for help. Ball State University will have a video conference 8:30 a.m. Friday in the Alumni Center promoting emergency safety. "This is Not a Drill: Indiana`s High-Tech Disaster Communications Technology" is in the New Economy, New Rules program by TechPoint, an Indiana-based, non-profit group.

Wow. Microsoft's slogan for its new operating system has generated significant buzz about the company's commercials for Vista, but at Ball State University, University Computing Services is saying 'wow' itself at the response the new software is getting from students on campus.

SGA slates receive fines Monday

Both Student Government Association slates received fines on Monday for some of their campaigning efforts. SGA Elections Board fined Vote Bare $75 for placing huge banners on the McKinley Avenue Parking Structure. This violates the Elections Code sign-size limit and the rule against posting directly on a university building, Elections Board chairwoman Kiersta Barnes said.


Clean & Clear tour visits BSU

The lines at the Barnes & Noble coffee shop might be longer than normal today because students have the opportunity to receive a free cup of java. By filling out a survey for the Clean & Clear campus tour, students can get a free product from Clean & Clear as well as a free cup of Barnes & Noble coffee.
