SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL CYNIC: Junk e-mail spreads panic

Checking my e-mail earlier this week, I found something curious in my junk folder. Generally, junk e-mail consists of messages from someone from one of my classes begging me for notes because they have not actually shown up all semester, messages from Ebay telling me what a great deal I could get on a used toaster and message from the Ball State Multicultural Center reminding me that it still, in fact, exists.

Wheel to wheel

Alleycats will prowl the Muncie streets Saturday as part of an event organized by two Ball State University students. Junior Peter Cavanagh and Senior Trever Bennett have publicized the event by distributing fliers around campus and in the Village and spreading the word on campus.

Ball State University interior designer Dan Stephenson said when his mother died four years ago, his partner had to use vacation days to attend the funeral, a benefit automatically given to married couples. THE SCENIC ROUTE: Travel by car beats bicycles

In Wednesday's paper, one of my esteemed colleagues claimed that "The bicycle is the best mode of transportation." Spoken like someone who has never been without the option of driving or riding in a motorized vehicle. Bicycles are a fine way to get around, don't get me wrong - I own one myself and wish I spent more time on it.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Freshmen pave way for success

Playing freshman in the lineup in nothing new for women's tennis coach Kathy Bull. In the past, she has had four freshmen filling out the match-time roster. This year, they are playing a similar role. That plan will not change this weekend when Ball State University plays host to Mid-American Conference foes Eastern Michigan University Friday and the University of Toledo Saturday.

With two days left on her contract as the women's basketball coach, Tracy Roller signed a four-year deal Thursday that pays her a base salary of $181,000 per year, a 70 percent bump over last year's salary. The deal guarantees the most successful women's basketball coach in Ball State history will receive at least $724,000 over the next four years and locks her in as coach until March 31, 2011.

More than a newspaper

hen students published the first newspaper at this university 85 years ago, they wrote about their desire to provide a forum for expression. The staff of the Ball State Daily News spends hours every day working to continue this legacy by filling that same need for expression today.

Students abuse Gradebook e-mail, send classmates spam

Ball State University students know what it is like to get a Gradebook e-mail from a classmate asking for notes. For one Comm 210 class, one mass e-mail did more than ask for notes. Steven Krasowski, a sophomore business administration major, sent an e-mail to his class asking if they like to party, then provided a link to a Facebook group that made reference to sexual acts.

OUR VIEW: Slam dunk

Women's basketball coach Tracy Roller will remain a Cardinal with a rewarding bit of padding. Instead of allowing Roller to flee the nest without contract renewal, Tom Collins, director of Intercollegiate Athletics, and she agreed on a deal that will keep players, fans and administrators proudly chirping for the next four seasons.

SPEAK SOFTLY: Student art can be overlooked

Student art is everywhere at Ball State University. The student body is very gifted when it comes to the world of art. Appreciating and enjoying the art of Ball State is a worthwhile endeavor. It is inexpensive, often free, and can be very rewarding if you know what you like and what you're looking for.

Social Smoke

Junior Brandon Winter finds Sex on the Peach to be the perfect way to unwind after a grueling day of classes. As he sat in garage with three friends last Thursday night, the peach-smelling smoke he exhaled created a haze that filled the room for an hour and a half.
