Tryouts to begin for College Idol

Open auditions for the College Idol Talent Showdown will be 6 p.m. Friday in Student Center Rooms 301 and 302. Derick Virgil, director of the Multicultural Center, said students who can sing, dance or rap are encouraged to compete for scholarship money and the opportunity to advance to the semifinal round, which is 9 p.

Two slates vie for SGA office

Three slates came to the second Student Government Association nomination convention after nobody showed up for the first convention on Feb. 12. Lynda Wiley, director of the Office of Student Life, said after the first convention that she did not recall a time since at least 1997 that no students announced they would run for SGA.


MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State, East Stroudsburg cancel Saturday match

After winning five straight matches, the Ball State University men's volleyball team will now have to wait seven more days before it can attempt to get its sixth consecutive win. The Ball State Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced Thursday the Cardinals' Saturday home match against East Stroudsburg University was canceled because of inclement weather in Pennsylvania.


Two executive slates running for SGA

Two executive slates announced they will run for office in the Student Government Association election. The slates are Campus Alliance and Andrews-Albritton '08. A third slate attempted to announce its candidacy, but it was denied because it did not meet an application requirement.

Riding a three-game losing streak, the Ball State University men's tennis team will try at its match against the University of Eastern Kentucky and Indiana State University at home this weekend to pull out of its slump. Standing at 3-6 on the season, coach Bill Richards said the Cardinals need to come through in tight situations and find a way to capitalize on opportunities to come out on top Friday against the Colonels and Sunday against the Sycamores.


SOFTBALL: BSU travels south for five-game weekend

A week after finishing 1-4 to begin the season at the Louisiana State Tournament, Ball State University softball coach Craig Nicholson said he expects a better performance from his team this weekend. The Cardinals are competing at the Panera Bread Tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Motivation comes in a variety of forms. For Ball State University sophomore Ali Bishel, it came in the form of a medical condition. "I started running because I had exercise asthma," Bishel said. "My doctor said that running was the best thing for it, so I did it.



Smoking ban keeps on track

Ball State University is on its way to having a mostly smoke-free campus as March 17 approaches and the implementation of the ban begins. The implementation process is on schedule and has experienced no problems, Kay Bales, vice president for student affairs and dean of students, said.

TRACK AND FIELD: Senior travels to USA Indoor Championships

While the Ball State University track and field team returns home at 4 p.m., redshirt senior Amber Williams will be on her way to Boston to participate in the USA Indoor Championships. Williams will run the 60-meter hurdles in a preliminary round on Saturday with a chance to qualify for the finals on Sunday.

When the starting lineups were announced Tuesday against the University of Toledo, Lisa Rusche's name did not blare over the public address system. Instead, freshman Emily Maggert took the floor for the Ball State University women's basketball team in Rusche's place as the senior watched the opening six minutes from the bench for the first time this season.

Billboard adds excitement

Drivers roll to a stop at Oakwood Avenue and McGalliard Road and stare at glowing ads on the new digital billboard while they wait for the light to change. Peak Outdoor Advertising owner Bill Glaser said his company installed the billboard on Dec. 21. Glaser could not comment on the installation cost.


MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Nothing new: Cards beat ranked team

Following Wednesday's win, coach Joel Walton said he wants his team to remain outside of the men's volleyball national rankings because of what that does for his team. Ball State University defeated No. 11 Loyola-Chicago University 31-33, 30-27, 30-19, 34-32 at Worthen Arena to pick up its third consecutive win against nationally ranked teams in less than three weeks.


Elevator traps 12 performers

Showtunes floated up the elevator shaft Wednesday as junior musical theatre major Ashton Naprier waited for a ride to the third floor. About ten minutes later, the Muncie police and fire department officials arrived and opened the elevator doors. Inside were 12 musical theatre majors in full costumes stuck between the basement and first floor of the Arts and Communication Building.


Copper wire theft causes phone issues

Copper wire thefts from phone towers and landlines has increased the past two years, Verizon Wireless representative Bill Kula said. Public safety is put at risk when copper wire is stolen, Kula said. Kula said the removal of copper wire from landlines and cell phone towers could knock out communications and make it impossible to dial 911 in an emergency.
