Students urged to use texts

Hoping to make Ball State University a safer place, some school officials are urging the campus community to increase the less than 25 percent of people who have subscribed to the emergency text message alert system. Tony Proudfoot, associate vice president for marketing and communications, said Ball State reflects the national average of students and employees who signed up for the service at other schools, which is about 25 percent.

BASEBALL: Cardinals adjust to two opponents

Sitting at .500 with a 4-4 record, the Ball State University baseball team will be heading to one of the Carolinas next on its annual trip around the South. The Cardinals will be in Conway, S.C. for three games this weekend against two teams. On Friday they will play Long Island University followed by Saturday and Sunday matchups against Coastal Carolina University.

Misspelling a web address can lead students far from the site they intended to visit and put them at risk for viruses and security concerns. Sarah LaChat, coordinator of technology documentation and support services, said companies and individuals might register a misspelled version of a more popular domain name in an attempt to get "accidental hits" or visits to their Web sites.

MEN'S TENNIS: BSU prepares for upcoming MAC play

When the dual-match season started in January the Ball State University men's tennis team ironed out two goals for its upcoming schedule: win the Mid-American Conference championship and earn a NCAA tournament berth. At the end of Monday's practice, Ball State men's tennis coach Bill Richards gathered his players and talked about where the Cardinals stand in accomplishing the early ambitions the team had set.


WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Seniors DeMuth and Rusche honored

As Senior Night ceremonies began following Wednesday's home win, Ball State University head coach Tracy Roller joined the select crowd at center court to honor the Cardinals' two graduating seniors. Walking through the small group, seniors Julie DeMuth and Lisa Rusche looked Roller in the eyes and hugged their coach tight enough to encompass her two-month absence from the team.


MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards' quiet contributor

The end of another Ball State University men's basketball season is approaching, a season more reliant on Cardinals' freshmen than many in the past. Ball State's final regular-season game is Sunday afternoon at Western Michigan University. The Broncos have already clinched the Mid-American Conference West Division title.


Communication Studies holds fundraiser for student

Students and faculty in the Department of Communication Studies discovered selling coffee is good for the heart. The department had a fundraiser Wednesday near the walkway between the David Letterman Communication and Media and Ball Communication buildings.



WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals try to play spoiler vs. Panthers

The Ball State University women's tennis team looks to play the role of spoiler when the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee brings its four-match winning streak to the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center at 1 p.m. The winning streak is the longest in Wisconsin-Milwaukee team history since they joined NCAA Division-I competition in the 1990-91 school year.


SOFTBALL: Cards head south, face new challenge

After three weeks of playing all of its games on the weekend, the Ball State University softball team will play a schedule in the next 10 days that more mirrors its upcoming schedule. For the first time this season, the Cardinals will play games that are not on Friday, Saturday or Sunday when they travel to the University of South Florida Tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday in Tampa, Fla.

"I was afraid to speak out loud when people were asking where you are from and what your major is. "Just knowing I was from a different place, people would look at you weird.

WOMEN'S GOLF: Cardinals open season after long break

Although snow has prevented the Ball State University women's golf team from practicing outside, the Cardinals will begin their spring season this weekend in Arizona. The Cardinals will open their season at the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational, which lasts through Sunday in Rio Verde, Ariz.


Slates await vote results of election

With voting underway for the Ball State University 2008 Student Government Association, there isn't much more the slates can do except wait. Campus Alliance Presidential candidate Frank Hood said he thought his slate's cumulative experience in student government would help them in Thursday's election.

Executive slates prepare for start of voting period

After a late start for Student Government Association's presidential campaign season, Campus Alliance and Andrews-Albritton '08 executive slates are preparing for the two-day voting period, which starts at 7:45 a.m. Frank Hood, presidential candidate for Campus Alliance, said the sense of this year's election was some what negative because of the lack of slates at the first nomination convention that were willing to run for office.
