OUR VIEW: No excuses

It's that time of year again. That time that slips right by without many college students even realizing it came and went until it's too late. No, it's not only midterms (which always does sneak up on us), but it's also time to register to vote in the November elections.



FOOTBALL: Pillar of defense

After the largest margin of victory at Scheumann Stadium since 1996, Ball State University football players sang the Cardinals' fight song and jogged off their home field Saturday. The atmosphere among the team after its win against the University at Buffalo was in stark contrast to what it was after Ball State's first home game of the season, a 14-13 loss to Miami University.


ANALYZE THIS: People don't need marriage to be happy

A flood must be coming that no single person knows about because everywhere you look people are in pairs. Couples are taking over the campus of Ball State University, which leads one to mistakenly believe you can't be considered "truly happy" unless you are engaged, are almost engaged or partially engaged.


LAST YEAR ON EARTH: Forgiveness needs effort

Seriously, forgiveness. But on a lighter note, Facebook. Almost a year ago, I got a message on Facebook that someone was deleting me from her friends list for the level of lewdness my profile picture showed. (As we all know, friend status removal is one of the biggest Faceslaps one can suffer on Facebook.


MEN'S GOLF: Cards 20 strokes back after two rounds

After 36 holes of the Xavier Invitational in Batavia, Ohio, the Ball State University men's golf team is tied for 11th place out of 20 teams. Junior Brian Maurer leads the Cardinals and is tied for 21st place individually. Sophomore Ross Cosat is four shots behind Maurer, and tied for 45th with a 146.



MEN'S GOLF: Ball State places outside of top 10

Coach Mike Fleck said he was hoping his team would move into the top third of the field after the final round of the Xavier Invitational in Batavia, Ohio. However, the Ball State University men's golf team finished 11th out of 20 teams. The Cardinals were unable to move up the leader board as they shot a 288 in the final round.


Something Else TV

It is now possible for dudes to dance with each other and keep it totally hetero, according to a clip from Something Else's comedy sketch "Man Dance." "Man Dance" is an online comedy sketch produced by the student organization, Something Else, said senior Al LeVine, executive producer of Something Else.


BSU installs 12 surveillance cameras in parking lots

Ball State University is installing surveillance cameras in Scheumann Stadium and Carmichael Hall's parking lots in an effort to improve campus safety. Electrical engineer Jack Willis said 12 surveillance cameras will be installed in the parking lots. There will be four cameras in the Carmichael parking lot, two in the stadium overflow parking lot, four in the Alumni Center parking lot and two in the stadium parking lot, Willis said.


FIELD HOCKEY: Unexpected playmakers

Coming off the 2006 field hockey season, Ball State University's team didn't quite know what to expect of junior forward Casey Hunsicker and sophomore forward Brooke MacGillivary. The pair combined for 12 shots and four starts in 20 games last season. As it turns out, Hunsicker and MacGillivary were just getting warmed up, as the two players lead the team in goals this season.



BASKETBALL: Stovall gets MAC honor

For the second time in his five-year career at Ball State University, guard Peyton Stovall was named to the Preseason All-Mid-American Conference Team. Stovall was one of 10 players, and the only Cardinal, whom the MAC head coaches and media selected to the team Tuesday.


Students celebrate Sukkot

Poles, tarps, corn stalks and food are making life near the Scramble Light more interesting. The Ball State Hillel, a Jewish organization, is celebrating the Jewish holiday Sukkot from Monday at 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday, said Ray Novotny, treasurer of Hillel.


Air Jam talent to rehearse acts

Air Jam performers must attend the choreography check from 7:30 to 11 p.m. today in Irving Gym, Room 200C. Kimberley Jackson, public relations representative for the Homecoming Steering Committee, said the performers will run through their routines, and the steering committee will determine whether they are appropriate and will fit in the allotted time.


Late Loop returns over weekend

The Muncie Indiana Transit System's Late Loop returned this weekend after going on a two-week hiatus because of a lack of sponsorship. Mary Gaston, asst. general manager for MITS, said the trolley returned Thursday with its regular schedule and route. Ridership this weekend was less than previous weekends with 321 patrons, Gaston said.



Construction crew repairs sidewalks

Ball State University will be repairing the last of three cracked sidewalk corners at the intersection of McKinley and Riverside avenues, Jim Lowe, director of engineering and operations, said. Two corners of the intersection have already been repaired, he said.


Immersive learning gets grant

A charitable foundation in Muncie gave $1 million to Ball State University's immersive learning programs. Provost Terry King said the Hamer D. and Phyllis C. Shafer Foundation notified Ball State about the grant during the summer. Ball State will receive installments from the grant during a five-year period, he said.


FIELD HOCKEY: Winless conference season continues with loss to CMU

For the first 21 minutes of play Sunday, Ball State University fought Central Michigan University to a standstill, as neither team scored a goal. However, it was then the Chippewas unleashed their offense and scored two goals in a 2:27 span. The Cardinals were unable to recover from the quick onslaught and fell 3-0 to Central Michigan.


Students to screen full-length film

A group of Ball State University students will screen a rough cut of a film they produced and offer the public a chance to critique it today. The screening is at 7:30 p.m. in the David Letterman Communication and Media Building Room 121 and admission is free.


Web site teaches stock trading basics

Anybody interested in investing $1 million in the stock market can do so online. Investors are offered $1 million of virtual money, however, which is offered to members of the Web site www.theupdown.com. The Web site was launched Sept. 5, CEO and co-Founder Michael Reich said.


WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards begin new type of streak

Returning to Worthen Arena for the first time in two weeks, the Ball State University women's volleyball team completed a 3-0 (30-17, 30-17, 30-25) sweep of the University at Buffalo Saturday to improve to 2-2 in the Mid-American Conference, 3-13 overall. The victory is the Cardinals' second in a row after defeating the University of Toledo Thursday.


FOOTBALL: Slaughterhouse

It isn't unusual to see a crowd, mostly composed of family and friends, hang around after a home game to offer support to the players. This time, however, a small smattering of the 3,800 students that attended the game scattered in the after crowd.
