5 dead after accident on I-69

Muncie police officers and paramedics clustered together on Ball State University's soccer field as a medical helicopter took off, transporting a victim of a fatal traffic accident on Interstate 69 on Sunday. Sgt. Linda Cook of the Muncie Police Department said officers closed University Avenue between Tillotson and Tally avenues to allow ambulances to transport accident victims to helicopters.



OUR VIEW: Don't ditch

Rumor has it, we just missed Fall Break. We realize there was a three-day weekend, but that's not the Fall Break we know and love. That break was four days, a chance to get away and recover from the horrors of the first half of the semester. That Fall Break is gone.


Ball State wins own tournament

The Ball State University Ultimate Frisbee club defeated its long-time rival, the Indianapolis Masters, to clinch the Indiana State Tournament Championship. The club rushed the field in jubilation after a short completion scored the final point, giving Ball State a 13-11 victory in the 24th annual tournament.


SOCCER: Overtime wins extend BSU's lead in MAC

With the presentation of flowers to forward Sarah Leibel, the senior day ceremony ended for the Ball State University soccer team. Leibel then ended the senior day game with a game-winning goal in overtime Sunday. Leibel scored her fourth goal of the season with 4:44 left in overtime to defeat the University of Toledo (11-4-1, 6-2 Mid-American Conference) 1-0 and extend Ball State's (10-4-1, 7-0-1 MAC) lead in the MAC.


Ball State trains at Atterbury

Instead of using their Fall Break to relax at home or catch up on homework, six Ball State University ROTC students spent three days at a grueling training event called the Ranger Challenge. The Ranger Challenge is an annual extracurricular activity for ROTC cadets, which takes place at Camp Atterbury in Edinburgh, Capt.



THE GREAT WHITE HYPE: Team plays serious soccer

The Ball State University soccer team is well on its way to winning a second straight Mid-American Conference regular season championship as it is 7-0-1 in Mid-American Conference play. This weekend it defeated the second-place team, the University of Toledo, in a thrilling overtime victory where senior forward Sarah Leibel scored off a corner with 4:44 remaining in the first overtime period.

When Ball State University coach Brady Hoke has his team go through its weekly two-minute drill this week in practice, the players might be a little more appreciative of its importance. Trailing by three points with 3:57 left in the fourth quarter, a weekly practice routine paid dividends in a game situation.


The versatile pumpkin

A summer drought is not enough to snuff out this year's pumpkin supply, said Linda Hiatt, co-owner of Hiatt Farm and manager of the corn maze and pumpkin patch. The amount of pumpkins has not been affected by the drought, she said; however, the size of the pumpkins has.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards suffer weekend losses

After hitting .207 in the first game of the match, the Ball State University women's volleyball team suffered a relapse offensively hitting -.044 and -.100 in games two and three of a 3-0 (36-34, 30-14, 30-24) loss to Bowling Green State University Saturday.


MEN'S BASKETBALL: Former player arrested on marijuana charges

The Delaware County Sheriff's Office arrested a former Ball State University basketball player Thursday, Delaware County Deputy Prosecutor Eric Hoffman said. According to the arrest warrant, police arrested Chapman on suspicion of possession of marijuana and maintaining a common nuisance, both class D felonies.


House south of Village goes up in blaze early Friday

No one was injured in a house fire that burned for about 45 minutes early Friday morning. 303 N. Martin Street caught fire at 12:44 a.m. Friday after a downed power line fell on the abandoned house, Jim Clevenger, Muncie Fire Department battalion chief, said.

OBJECTIONABLE MATERIAL: Libertarians misguided with good intentions

An unknown Ball State University student advertised on Oct. 15 the presidential campaign of Rep. Ron Paul, a Republican with libertarian qualities, with chalk writing around Teachers College and the Scramble Light. Paul is a long-shot candidate, but the amount of attention he has received indicates a specter is haunting Ball State: the specter of libertarianism.

Humans vs. Zombies is a crazy games of grown-up tag and more than 350 students will soon be running around campus wearing green scarves and brandishing modified Nerf dart guns and (hopefully) clean, balled-up socks to throw at each other.


Sigma Kappa to sell lollipops for charity

Sigma Kappa sorority will sell lollipops for $1 this week, and all proceeds go to Alzheimer's disease research. The sale will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Wednesday in the Atrium. Foundation Chairwoman Katie Hennessey said the sorority sold lollipops when they walked at Minnetrista to raise money for research, but selling them on campus was the main philanthropy that went toward the cause.


MEN'S TENNIS: Freshman advances to Regional quarterfinals

Three Ball State University players competed in the International Tennis Associations Midwest Regional Tournament in Minneapolis, Minn. this weekend. Freshman Eduardo Pavia is in the Quarterfinals of the Singles Consolation Draw, after defeating Marquette University's Steven Shao (7-6(7);2-6;6-1), The Ohio State University's Ty Schaub (6-4;4-6;6-4) and University of Notre Dame's Dan Stahl (7-6;6-1).


FOOTBALL: Cards rely on defense in win

Faced with fourth and one with less than six minutes remaining in regulation, Nate Davis stood on the 40-yard line and waved his hand, signaling to the coaches he wanted to go for the first down. Trailing three points and unable to create momentum offensively, Davis figured it would be best to force feed the Cardinals' usually-reliable side of the ball.


TENNIS: Cards win four matches in weekend invitational

At the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Midwest Regional tournament last weekend, the Ball State University men's tennis team won four out of eight matches. Three of those matches were won by a freshman. Freshman Eduardo Pavia had the most successful regional tournament this weekend in Minneapolis, Minn.
