WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals win season-high 2nd straight match

For the second straight match, the Ball State University women's volleyball team came away with a victory, matching its longest win streak of the season. The Cardinals defeated the University of Akron on the road 3-2 (25-30, 30-27, 23-30, 30-25, 16-14). They improved to 5-22 and 4-10 in the Mid-American Conference with the victory.

Television satirist Stephen Colbert, who had been campaigning to be put on the Democratic ticket in South Carolina, was denied a spot on the ballot by the South Carolina Democratic Party late last week.


Zombie game comes to close

Three days after the activity that turned Ball State University into a feeding ground for the undead concluded prematurely, students are making plans to organize another round of the game. Event organizers for Humans vs. Zombies, a campus-wide role-playing game involving more than 400 students, said the event was an overwhelming success because it provided a place for students from different social circles to find common ground and interact.


FOOTBALL: Indiana's passing leads team to win instead of running

With memories of last year's game against Indiana University fresh in the minds of Ball State University defenders, the Cardinals knew how productive Hoosier quarterback Kellen Lewis could be running the football. In Saturday's rematch, the Ball State defense learned first hand why Lewis is second in the Big Ten in total offense per game.


Hammering a habitat

Wielding hammers and nails, dozens of Ball State University students joined a crew from Habitat for Humanity to help build a home for a Muncie family. Members of Panhellenic Council and other students gathered in a Muncie neighborhood to work on a house's foundation on Saturday.



SOCCER: Cards advance to semi-finals

Following Sunday's soccer game, senior Lindsay Martin smiled and even jumped up and down as she went around retelling her story from the game. The defender scored the goal that gave Ball State University a 1-0 win against Miami University in the first round of the Mid-American Conference tournament at the Ball State Soccer Field.


FOOTBALL: Cards can't capitalize

After developing a reputation during the past two seasons for playing in close games against teams from power conferences, the Ball State University football program took a step backwards Saturday at Indiana University. The Hoosiers led by double digits for most of the second half and beat Ball State 38-20.


Sorority has poker tournament

Players put on their best bluffs and showed their best hands to win all the chips they could at Sigma Kappa sorority's Aces High poker and euchre tournament Friday. Junior Sigma Kappa member Abby Kaffenberger said this was the second year the sorority had the tournament.


OBJECTIONABLE MATERIAL: Investors profit from Iraq war

An Oct. 30 McClatchy Newspapers article about the Iraqi government's plan to strip foreign contractors of immunity following the recent shooting incident involving Blackwater USA mercenaries mentioned something called Order 17. Order 17, which gives contractors said immunity, is one of 100 orders Administrator L.

As a music performance professor and outreach coordinator for the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies, George Wolfe is not a man with a lot of spare time. Neither is Andrew Brown, a student leader of Campus Crusade for Christ, or Nathan Bogert, a music performance major.


MITS starts North Late Loop

The first weekend for the North Late Loop trolley offered Ball State University students a ride to businesses on the north end of campus. Texas Roadhouse manager Paul Ramos said the business had a busy weekend but could not tell if the trolley had an effect.

We've hit that tough time of the semester, where many students inevitably hit a mid-semester slump. Either you're freaking out because there's only 22 days of classes left before Finals Week arrives, or you're burnt out and counting the minutes until Winter Break arrives.


Faculty OKs curriculum after debate

A new core curriculum is one step closer toward implementation after the Faculty Council approved the measure with a 31-13 vote Thursday. The faculty members debated how the Ball State University Core Curriculum for the 21st Century would affect each department.



WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals defeat Hoosier Lady Stars in first exhibition game

After experiencing a tougher-than-anticipated challenge from the Hoosier Lady Stars Friday, Ball State women's basketball coach Tracy Roller said her team has to improve before its season opener in eight days. "I'm glad we're not playing in the MAC Championship Game right now," Roller said following her team's 75-68 win.


MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals play Anderson in Sunday exhibition

On Tuesday night, Ball State University basketball fans got their first glance of first-year Cardinals' coach Billy Taylor and his 2007-08 men's basketball team at the "Fan Jam" at Worthen Arena. On Sunday afternoon, fans will get a look at what that team can do on the floor as Ball State plays Division III Anderson University in an exhibition game.


SWIMMING AND DIVING: Ball State women to compete in meets

The Ball State University women's swimming and diving team will continue its season this weekend at the Lewellen Aquatic Center. The Cardinals will play host to the University of Toledo at 6 p.m. and Bowling Green State University at 1 p.m. Saturday. Both the men's and women's teams competed in their last event as both teams defeated Eastern Illinois University Oct.


FIELD HOCKEY: Cards eliminated in MAC tournament

The last game of Ball State University field hockey team's season ended up telling a lot about the year as a whole. In Ball State's first round 1-0 loss to Central Michigan University, which eliminated them from the Mid-American Conference tournament and ended their season, Ball State was outshot 27-10.


FIELD HOCKEY: Three Cards earn all-MAC honors

Hours after Ball State University's season ended with a 1-0 defeat to Central Michigan University at the Mid-American Conference tournament, three Cardinals were given the distinction of a spot on the All-MAC team. Senior midfielder Lauren Cruz and sophomore forward Brooke MacGillivary were named to the all-conference first team while senior defender Nicole Humphreys gained a spot on the second team.


MEN'S TENNIS: BSU prepares for last fall event

After more than a month of playing individual tournaments, it looked as though the Ball State University men's tennis team would have an opportunity to play as a team this weekend in the Texas Invitational. However, the Cardinals will be missing one player, junior Jimmy Brannon, who will not make the trip to Austin, Texas.


FOOTBALL: Cardinals' punter chosen as Ray Guy finalist

After being named to almost every preseason All-American list, Ball State University punter Chris Miller was chosen as one of 10 national finalists for the Ray Guy award. The Ray Guy award is given to the nation's top punter and is chosen by the Greater Augusta Sports Council.
