For Ball State University students returning to campus, this is the time to see old friends and move into new apartments, houses and dorms. While settling into their new apartments, students might realize there is just something missing. Often they know what it is, and sometimes they won't.
This fall Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity will return to campus, and some changes to the old recruitment process will change the face of the greek community. There also is hope of a greek village to help Ball State University compete with other college campuses across the United States.
Even though Ball State's men's golf team is not required to participate in tournaments over summer vacation, Cardinals teammates were working hard to prepare for the fall season. After a disappointing spring season, head coach Mike Fleck said he expects a more experienced lineup to help his team rebound and have a successful 2008-09 season.
Earlier this year Indiana became the center of attention during the 2008 presidential primaries, and it appears the national attention -¡will continue through the election on Nov. 4, Joseph Losco, Ball State University political science department chairman, said.
The work Ball State University's Theta Chi fraternity did Spring Semester to improve itself paid off, allowing the house to win a chapter excellence award. Theta Chi President Brandon Steinbrook said he was excited to receive the award especially because this was the first time the house has won since it was first presented in 1985.
A new season brings a fresh start and an opportunity for Ball State's women's volleyball team to move toward improvement. Last season was one for the record books but not for the reasons coach Dave Boos might have preferred. The Cardinals finished 5-25, setting the program's loss record and lowest win total.
Although the Ball State soccer team has won the past two Mid-American Conference regular-season championships, it's still looking for its first appearance in the NCAA tournament. Entering this season under first-year coach Michael Lovett, taking the next step and making the NCAA tournament is one of the Cardinals' main goals.
After cruising to victories in the past two Mid-American Conference championship games, those within Central Michigan's football program aren't accustomed to tough competition from league opponents. A third parade lap in 2008 might be more difficult for the Chippewas, however.
Matt Gunter doesn't like his tomatoes to be pretty. While plump, uncracked, bright red tomatoes might be appealing to many grocery shoppers, Gunter says those tomatoes are riddled with pesticides and fertilizers and haven't the slightest bit of real flavor.
As reporters flocked to Nate Davis at the Mid-American Conference's Media Day, Ball State punter Chris Miller waited patiently to be approached. The fact Miller is an All-American punter didn't seem to earn him many points with media members. Similar to game situations, those in attendance preferred to see the Cardinals' quarterback instead of their punter.
Annette Payne is sure there are a few things she can count on from her team. "We always have a team that believes in working hard, believes in showing up ready to play and take on challenges," Payne said. Those challenges will start early for the Cardinals, who will open their season with four games on the road before returning home to play Big Ten-power Michigan.
Sometimes the best part of an experience also can be the most overwhelming. Ball State truly is a great school. I know it sounds like one of the pamphlets the administration puts out to get parents excited about sending us here, but it is true. Ball State will let you experience so many different things.
In the world of education, many teachers agree there is no tool more valuable to possess than personal experience in their field. This experience gives the students a better grasp of the realities of the jobs they will one day hold. This school year, students studying political science and architecture will get a rare chance to listen to an instructor with experience that is hard to match.
Ball State University police work hard to make sure students are safe and campus crime is low, Director of Public Safety Gene Burton said. "I believe Ball State University compares very well to other universities in terms of campus crime and student safety," he said.
Congratulations Ball State. Once again the administrators have put students' best interests to mind. The university prides itself on having top-notch professors with several years of experience in their fields, and one newly hired professor could not get much more experience than being the former mayor of Indianapolis.
Urban legends and hauntings have a home even at Ball State University. The Anthropology Club has offered haunted tours of Ball State in the past years to give students a chance to discover some ghosts.-á Elliot Hall is said to have an eerie past that started with its christening in 1937.
When Ball State University German professor Ron Warner commutes the four miles round-trip to and from his office on campus, he doesn't use a car. Instead, he hops on his Raleigh 500 two-tone gray commuter bike. Warner is among a growing number of people who, for various reasons, have parked their cars and opted for a more fuel-efficient, athletic and environmentally friendly mode of transportation - the bicycle.
