The increasing buzz surrounding some of young Hollywood's choice to abstain from pre-marital sex hit its pinnacle at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards last week. During the show, host and British comedian, Russell Brand, gibed the Jonas Brothers for wearing purity rings - an external symbol of their decision to save sex for marriage.



OUR VIEW: Pinch for the pump

For those of us already coping with the frugal budget of a college student, filling up our gas tanks has become a bit brutal on the bank account. Like it or not, if you need to drive, you need to start pinching pennies elsewhere to compensate for what we're seeing at the pump.

Microsoft launches more secure browser

Microsoft is launching an internet browser that allows users to surf the Web without leaving a trace of the sites they've visited. InPrivate Browsing, or the "porn mode" browser, is becoming accepted at locations offering public access to computers. This could become an important tool on Ball State University's campus to protect the privacy of students.


STATE OF BALLS: Balance stress as semester picks up pace

Syllabus week has passed and classes are getting into their quizzes, tests and projects while students are buying energy drinks in bulk in order to keep up. Along with the wonder that is rigorous studying during sleepless nights comes stress. It's easy to get worked up about school, especially being new to the college experience.



Woodworth worth the wait

With its new features, Web-based ordering system and fresh food ideas, it's no wonder why some consider Woodworth Commons to have the best food at Ball State University. Sophomore journalism education major Tierra Bush lives in Woodworth Complex and has been a witness to the frenzy since it reopened a year ago.


Blackboard costs BSU $101,000

For about the price of buying every student a gallon of gas, Ball State University is providing campus with the services of Blackboard for another year. Jr. King, interim associate vice president for information technology, said Ball State paid about $101,000 or roughly $5 per student to use Blackboard from October 2008 to September 2009.

MEN'S GOLF: Final-round heroics lift BSU to 6th

Managing a final-day round 295, the Ball State University men's golf team was able to move up four spots on the leader board and finish sixth out of 14 teams in the Wolf Run Intercollegiate at Zionsville. Although the Cardinals shot a 294 in the first round, a score of 308 in round two forced Ball State to come from behind in the third round.



FOOTBALL: Cards receive vote in AP poll

The Ball State University football team received one vote in the Associated Press poll released Sunday night. Ball State (3-0), the University of Central Florida and the University of South Carolina each had one vote and are listed at No. 43 in the weekly poll.


Ike's high winds, rain surge through Muncie

FIELD HOCKEY: From near upset to absolute collapse

After giving the No. 16 University of Michigan a wakeup call, the Ball State University field hockey team received one of its own two days later. Ball State nearly upset Michigan on Friday before falling 4-3. But Sunday's 2-1 loss to St. Louis University was a completely different game although the result was the same for the Cardinals, which fell to 1-5 on the season.


YOUR TURN: Party politics interfering with voting

The Delaware County Election Board is fighting over whether students deserve an early voting site on campus. The battle is not about money. Both President Gora and SGA President Frank Hood have committed to help pay for the voting center right on campus. The battle isn't about security or logistics.



Safety makes the most out of his second start with three interceptions

Playing against a team that recruited him as a senior at Canfield High School, Ball State University safety Sean Baker's second collegiate start Saturday finished as the game of his life. The redshirt freshman tied Ball State's single-game record with three interceptions, returned a third-quarter fumble for a 33-yard touchdown and led the Cardinals with nine tackles.


WOMEN'S GOLF: Cards finish fourth in Pennsylvania invitational

The Ball State University women's golf team finished in fourth place in the Nittany Lion Invitational at State College, Pa., during the weekend. The Cardinals finished the 54-hole tournament with 932 -¡- 23 strokes behind first-place William & Mary. Sophomore Brittany Kelly led Ball State, shooting a 79-76-74.


Wage increase causes mixed reactions

Last week Ball State University's Board of Trustees voted to increase the maximum student wage to $8.50 an hour. The change, which raises the maximum wage a full dollar, has been implemented. However, that doesn't mean all students will earn that much. "If students are making $7.


Professor remodels historic home

Digging through nearly two centuries of remodels and modernization has paid off for a Ball State University professor. The Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana honored associate professor Ron Morris with a historic preservation award in July for restoring James Rariden's 1830s house in Centerville.

With plenty of uncertainty about whether it could handle the lead role, the defense didn't disappoint.


SPEAK SOFTLY: Satellite voting needs to be planned better

One of America's most fundamental liberties is the right for everyone to vote. It is the foundation of our government and is indeed the foundation of democracy. One thing we should all be dedicated to is making sure that all voters get the chance to voice their opinion.

Despite some gray skies over Muncie this weekend, the city became slightly greener because of the efforts of a Ball State University senior. James Nimmer's Wuhnurth concert came to a close Sunday, raising money for Full Circle Arts Co-op and a cluster of environmental initiatives in a city that is generally known for its industrial nature.
