WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards open MAC season

Homecoming festivities will play second fiddle this weekend for coach Dave Boos and the Ball State University women's volleyball team. Coming off a satisfying 3-0 sweep of George Mason University in its last match Saturday, Boos is eager to play host to Central Michigan University tonight and Eastern Michigan University on Saturday in the Cardinals' Mid-American Conference opening matches at Worthen Arena.

'Violet' sets out on a mission to find healing

After being terribly scarred from a horrible accident, Violet sets out on a mission to find healing and, in the process, comes across some fascinating people. Junior musical theatre major Bridget Gillenwater brings the title character to life in the musical "Violet.


Professor explains economy

Students showcase talents at Music on McKinley

At the third annual Music on McKinley event, students wandered over to the University Green to listen to tunes other than the bell tower's chimes. They sat in the grass or stood to watch students do what they enjoy most: performing. At one of the music stations, audience members watched as third-year telecommunications major T.


FOOTBALL: Letterman praises Cards football team

Almost 10 years ago during the Ball State University football team's historic 21-game losing streak, David Letterman used his late-night show to give the team a pregame pep talk. He had a more positive reason to mention the Cardinals though on Tuesday's episode of The Late Show with David Letterman.


Touch rings in the music

Ball State University seniors Maggie Stutesman and Allison Griner came prepared to win Touch the Tower. Clad with sweatshirts and blankets in case the competition stretched into the night, Stutesman said winning something for her residence hall - Studebaker West - would be easy.



SOCCER: BSU ready to defend titles, make statement vs. CMU

With the start of Mid-American Conference play, the Ball State University soccer team is looking to make a statement to the rest of the league that it is still at the top of the MAC. The Cardinals (4-4, 0-0 Mid-American Conference) are the two-time defending regular season MAC champions and the one team in conference history to win back-to-back outright titles.


Folk singer speaks out for Obama (with video)

Ball State University freshman Chelsea Turner, 20, grasped her Polaroid camera as she scooted through Vera Mae's Bistro in downtown Muncie, waiting for singer and songwriter Carole King to show up. "I learned of her when I was 7 and I've been in love with her ever since," the early childhood education major said.


FOOTBALL: Cards break BCS winless trend

Ball State University's players still worried about Dante Love's health less than 24 hours after beating Indiana University on Saturday. They didn't allow their concern to detour them from focusing on the rest of the season. "We had a tremendous practice last night," coach Brady Hoke said at his press conference Monday.


FOOTBALL: Cardinals win weekly conference awards

For the second time in his career, Ball State University running back MiQuale Lewis was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Offensive Player of the Week on Tuesday. Lewis scored four touchdowns Saturday in Ball State's 42-20 victory at Indiana University, the team's first ever victory against a BCS school.



Building bonfires

As Homecoming showed Monday, a bonfire can be a great way to get together with friends to relax. Students can also celebrate the first week of autumn with a campfire. Along with ghost stories, s'mores, song singing and hotdogs, a campfire can be the perfect place to relax and watch the seasons change.


MEN'S TENNIS: Coach confident in upcoming season

Returning to Muncie after his teams' season opening match at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, Ball State University's men's tennis coach Bill Richards is confident that his team is ready for the upcoming season. "Really from a performance standpoint, I think we did fairly well," Richards said.


WOMEN'S GOLF: Cards win title at home

Playing in its own backyard seemed to pay off for the Ball State University women's golf team as it captured another Cardinal Classic on Tuesday. The Cardinals set two school records and finished ahead of second place the University of Akron by seven strokes.

Charlie's Angels, a group composed of six freshmen and one sophomore, admitted their performance Tuesday night's had been their first together onstage. But "excitement, shock and disbelief" were the first words that came out of group member Sam Lopez's mouth after it was announced as overall Talent Search winner.

BASEBALL: Cubs pick up former Ball State outfielder

Two weeks after the Cleveland Indians added a former Ball State University baseball player to their major league roster, they lost another former Cardinal from their organization to the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs claimed outfielder Brad Snyder off waivers Monday from the Indians and added him to their 40-man roster.


Ball State recognizes faculty for contributions

Each year, Ball State University recognizes a group of faculty and administrators as the best among their colleagues. Associate Provost Marilyn Buck said faculty members were nominated by people within their departments. A committee made up of former award winners chose the finalists and winners.
