LAS VEGAS - As the Miss America festivities continue during the week, Nicole Rash sat in a Planet Hollywood hotel lobby. Across the hall, her directors, Frank Ricketts and Aren Howell, said they sat across the hall and could only wave hello. "We don't interact with her freely all day," Ricketts said.

James Lowry, former professor of marketing and management, said after surveying Ball State students in marketing classes, he and other researchers found that men "tend to put things off a little more.

International Bowl will result in a loss of $395,000

It cost almost $400,000 for Ball State University to go to the International Bowl based on current projections. Randy Howard, associate vice president, finance and assistant treasurer, said when the numbers are finalized in about a month, it will cost Ball State about $395,000.


FOOTBALL: Cards schedule Mean Green

Ball State University needs one more game to finalize its 2009 football schedule after adding the University of North Texas. Ball State is scheduled to play North Texas at Scheumann Stadium in 2009 and in Denton, Texas during the 2013 season, according to documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act.



WOMEN'S TENNIS: Ball State focuses on itself instead of opponent

The Ball State University women's tennis team (1-0) faces off against Wright State University (0-0) Wednesday at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. Cardinal head coach Kathy Bull said she hopes her team can make the necessary improvements after Ball State's 6-1 season-opening victory against the University of Dayton Saturday.


Professor gives aid to refugees in Africa

A Ball State University professor's approach to therapy is helping African refugees cope with the trauma of civil war. Assistant professor of psychology Lucinda Woodward said she and Ball State alumnus, Matthew Decker, will return to a refugee camp in Ghana with a group of students to continue the work they conducted there last summer.


WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Making a statement

With three victories to open Mid-American Conference play, Ball State University's women's basketball team resembled the league favorite most expected at the beginning of the season. Miss Indiana uses Troll as lucky charm

LAS VEGAS - At the Miss America competition in a city with labyrinths of casino slot machines, there is a figure that equals the brilliance of the Las Vegas strip. Nicole Rash's directors from Miss Indiana carry it around with them. A good luck troll doll, standing six inches tall with blue hair flowing as freely as liquid in a lava lamp, has been a pageant good luck charm for 14 years, Rash's directors said.


MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals' rally comes up short on the road

With a chance to tie the game Tuesday night, Ball State University senior guard Peyton Stovall stood at the free throw line with 5.9 seconds left, hoping to add to his legend. However, he couldn't convert on the game-tying attempt, and after a full-court race by freshman guard Melvin Goins fell short as time ran out, Northern Illinois University escaped the Cardinals with a 60-58 victory.


Ball State, Thompson reach $200,000 settlement

Ball State University will pay former men's basketball coach Ronny Thompson $200,000 as part of a settlement stemming from his leaving the university in July. According to the settlement Ball State and Thompson reached the agreement Tuesday. The payment is in exchange for "Thompson's relinquishment of certain contract, tort, civil rights, employment and other rights and claims, and that Thompson will not be providing services of any kind to the university," according to the settlement.


Little Rock

Terrence Roberts, one of the Little Rock Nine, shared his "frightening and frustrating, but important" experiences of racial discrimination and segregation. Ball State University students, faculty and staff filled Pruis Hall seats to the top rows Tuesday.


THE BOOGEYMAN: World facing historical rise in temperatures

On Saturday, the BBC reported that the Spanish Oceanographic Institute published a study finding that the ocean depth in the Mediterranean Sea has been increasing since the 1970s, and has been steadily accelerating. This acceleration has been attributed to global warming, or climate change.


City searches for new police chief

Chief Joe Winkle of the Muncie Police Department has not applied to be re-appointed to his position, Mayor Sharon McShurley said. McShurley said she asked Winkle to remain as chief for 90 days until the city finds a replacement. A committee has interviewed several candidates, she said, but it had not informed her about the applicants' identities or qualifications.


WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals pillage Raiders

Freshman Georgina Thomson had plenty of time to cheer on her teammates in the Ball State University women's tennis team's 7-0 sweep of Wright State University on Wednesday. Thomson and partner Katherine Rist were the first winners of the doubles matches with an 8-1 victory.
