BSU to crown new Mr., Miss Unity

Ball State University students will compete for scholarships in the Unity Pageant at 3 p.m. Saturday in Pruis Hall. Tiffany Washington, assistant director of student life and adviser for the multicultural groups sponsoring Unity Week, said pageant competitors will vie for scholarships and the title of Mr.



Rash's parents break pageant stereotypes

When Cindy Rash reflected on helping her daughter be Miss Indiana in the past year, she started to laugh. "I chuckle because it has been pretty busy," she said. The role of Miss Indiana requires traveling around the state, Cindy Rash said, and she went with Nicole when able to.


MEN'S TENNIS: Ball State recovers with win vs. IPFW

With its No. 1 and No. 2 players watching from the sidelines, the Ball State University men's tennis team recovered from a disappointing weekend with a 7-0 sweep of IPFW. Head coach Bill Richards said he sat out junior Jose Perdomo and freshman Eduardo Pavia to fulfill NCAA regulations for the number of matches allowed in a year of play.


OUR VIEW: Lack of fanfare

Ball State University is not known for having school spirit. Most tailgaters are in it for the pre-game festivities and if they happen to make it to the game that's OK, but if not that's cool too. However, now is a time when we can really show school spirit and support one of our own in her efforts to make her dream come true.


Headquarters silences leader of fraternity

Delta Tau Delta International Headquarters has prohibited the president of the Ball State University chapter from discussing the expulsion or suspension of almost half of the fraternity's members. Chapter President Kyle Pfeifer could not comment on any matters involving the fraternity without permission from headquarters, he said before the Interfraternity Council meeting Thursday.



GYMNASTICS: Cards look for first home win despite losing athletes to injury

The 0-2 Ball State University gymnastics team will try to pick up its first victory in Irving Gym against preseason favorite Kent State University. The Golden Flashes were selected by the Mid-American Conference coaches to win the regular season championship after finishing in a tie for the 2007 regular season title with a 5-1 record.


MEN'S BASKETBALL: Giles adjusts to new role

Making the jump from junior college basketball to Division I is difficult enough by itself. Ball State University junior forward Rob Giles's transition was made doubly difficult because he had to completely change his role. "It was a huge transition for me early in the season," Giles said, "going from playing [shooting guard] in junior college to playing the post.


SWIMMING AND DIVING: Ball State coach doesn't expect win at Eastern Michigan

Entering Saturday's 1 p.m. meet at Eastern Michigan University, the Ball State University swimming and diving teams are not expecting to win. "We'd like to win but we don't have the manpower to win at this point," co-coach Bob Thomas said. Eastern Michigan is coming off Mid-American Conference championships in both men's and women's swimming and diving.


Students could receive $300 more in returns

WASHINGTON - Because of an economic stimulus package Congressional leaders and the White House agreed upon Thursday, Ball State University students could find themselves about $300 richer. The stimulus package would give most tax filers refunds of $600 to $1,200, and more if they have children.



MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Lewis has extra motivation for match against Ball State

Almost nine months after its season ended in Worthen Arena, Lewis University will return to the same arena for the first time. The Ball State University men's volleyball team will play Lewis at 7 p.m. This match marks the first time the teams have played each other since the Cardinals swept the Flyers in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament quarterfinals last season.


TRACK AND FIELD: Cardinals' coach to face former team

When the Ball State University track and field team travels to Bloomington today for the Gladstein Invitational, it will be a homecoming of sorts for head coach Randy Heisler. Heisler spent 18 years coaching track and field at Indiana University before coming to Muncie last year.


WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: BSU looks to avenge MAC loss

Since the first tip off earlier this season, Ball State University women's basketball players have had Saturday's date circled on their schedule. The Cardinals play host to Bowling Green State University, which represented two of Ball State's seven defeats last season, including a 16-point loss in the Mid-American Conference tournament championship game.


Flu cases on campus increase

The number of reported cases of influenza on Ball State University's campus has increased considerably from last year, said Kent Bullis, medical director at the Amelia T. Wood Student Health Center. The Health Center was suddenly overwhelmed with flu patients this week, Bullis said.



Rash will compete in main competition Saturday in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS - The house lights grew brighter as the Miss America talent preliminary ended without a scholarship for Miss Indiana Nicole Rash. The Rash family and friends left the theater undeterred before their daughter competes in the main competition Saturday, and they were ready to see Nicole in the ball room for a post-preliminary social.


MEN'S BASKETBALL: Ball State pays Ronny Thompson $200,000

Ball State University paid former men's basketball coach Ronny Thompson $200,000 Tuesday as part of a settlement released Wednesday. While the parties agreed to the settlement, according to the agreement they also agreed that each party denies it is liable of any inappropriate or illegal acts.


WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals get intensity-filled win

Kiley Jarrett spun around, faced Central Michigan University's bench and pumped her fist with an enthusiastic scream as teammate Porchia Green muscled a first-half layup through the net. With the included free throw, Green's 3-point play capped Ball State University's 20-5 run that handed it a 13-point lead midway through the opening period.


MEN'S GOLF: Cards honor fallen teammate

Even though it has been a year since men's golf coach Mike Fleck lost one of Ball State University's most productive freshmen golfers, there is not a day in which he does not admire Travis J. Smith. When Smith became a member of the golf team in 2006, Fleck knew he was an exceptional recruit.

Miss Indiana has to prepare on her own

LAS VEGAS - As the Miss America festivities continue during the week, Nicole Rash sat in a Planet Hollywood hotel lobby. Across the hall, her directors, Frank Ricketts and Aren Howell, said they sat across the hall and could only wave hello. "We don't interact with her freely all day," Ricketts said.
