MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals' rally comes up short on the road

With a chance to tie the game Tuesday night, Ball State University senior guard Peyton Stovall stood at the free throw line with 5.9 seconds left, hoping to add to his legend. However, he couldn't convert on the game-tying attempt, and after a full-court race by freshman guard Melvin Goins fell short as time ran out, Northern Illinois University escaped the Cardinals with a 60-58 victory.



Ball State, Thompson reach $200,000 settlement

Ball State University will pay former men's basketball coach Ronny Thompson $200,000 as part of a settlement stemming from his leaving the university in July. According to the settlement Ball State and Thompson reached the agreement Tuesday. The payment is in exchange for "Thompson's relinquishment of certain contract, tort, civil rights, employment and other rights and claims, and that Thompson will not be providing services of any kind to the university," according to the settlement.


Little Rock

Terrence Roberts, one of the Little Rock Nine, shared his "frightening and frustrating, but important" experiences of racial discrimination and segregation. Ball State University students, faculty and staff filled Pruis Hall seats to the top rows Tuesday.


THE BOOGEYMAN: World facing historical rise in temperatures

On Saturday, the BBC reported that the Spanish Oceanographic Institute published a study finding that the ocean depth in the Mediterranean Sea has been increasing since the 1970s, and has been steadily accelerating. This acceleration has been attributed to global warming, or climate change.


City searches for new police chief

Chief Joe Winkle of the Muncie Police Department has not applied to be re-appointed to his position, Mayor Sharon McShurley said. McShurley said she asked Winkle to remain as chief for 90 days until the city finds a replacement. A committee has interviewed several candidates, she said, but it had not informed her about the applicants' identities or qualifications.



WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals pillage Raiders

Freshman Georgina Thomson had plenty of time to cheer on her teammates in the Ball State University women's tennis team's 7-0 sweep of Wright State University on Wednesday. Thomson and partner Katherine Rist were the first winners of the doubles matches with an 8-1 victory.


Job searches begin for two positions

Almost a month after Deputy Athletics Director Ken Brown retired from Ball State University, the search for his replacement has not begun. Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins said he is focusing on other job openings now instead of the deputy athletics director position.


Fraternity expels 19 members

Delta Tau Delta International Fraternity expelled 19 members from its Ball State University chapter, and it suspended seven after an examination to determine whether they were qualified to be members, said Cara Luyster, assistant director of student life. Luyster said each member of the fraternity was required to attend an interview session with representatives from the fraternity's headquarters to determine whether they were fit to be members.



MEN'S TENNIS: Cards continue to look for first dual match win

Entering game two of a five-game homestand, the Ball State University men's tennis team faces IPFW today still looking to find their first win of duel match schedule. The Cardinals lost their first two matches to nationally ranked University of Illinois and 3-1 Northwestern University last weekend and Ball State coach Bill Richards said Thursday's game against the Mastodons will be a proving ground for the team to get back on its feet for the University of Michigan Saturday.


Attorneys present opening arguments for trial

INDIANAPOLIS - Tuesday's opening arguments of the McKinney v. Duplain civil trial, which focuses on the shooting death of a Ball State University student, couldn't have been more dissimilar, both in content and presentation. Geoffrey Fieger, representing the family of Michael McKinney, was dynamic in his approach and tried to make an emotional plea to the jury.


A family's fight

It's been 1,536 days since four bullets pierced Tim McKinney's son, leaving him lifeless in the backyard of a near-campus home. Each day, the McKinney family coped with the reality that Michael McKinney wouldn't be returning home. The days went by, and with them went the ability to hold someone accountable for their loved one's death.


MEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals fall to Big Ten competitors

This weekend showed Ball State University men's tennis coach Bill Richards that his team's performance can drastically change between matches. The Cardinals lost 7-0 against the No. 8 ranked University of Illinois Friday and fell 6-1 to Northwestern University Sunday.



Ball State, families feel effects of student deaths

In the nearly five-month span from Nov. 8, 2003 to March 24, 2004, one Ball State student was killed by a university police officer, one Ball State student was robbed and murdered by Muncie residents and Ball State began the "Police Yourself" campaign, a controversial advertising campaign among students that led to multiple protests.


BSU student competes in Las Vegas

Cindy and Bill Rash flew to Las Vegas on Saturday, two days after their daughter, Nicole Rash, arrived as Miss Indiana. In the city of sin, Cindy arrived planning to see her daughter for just a little bit, she said. Nicole's schedule is "swamped," she said, and when Nicole does have free time, she either eats a snack or takes a nap.


WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Rockets soar past Cards

Enduring three long road trips in 10 days seemed to finally take its toll on Ball State University's women's basketball team Saturday at the University of Toledo. Playing on weathered legs, the Cardinals used a 13-4 run to pull within two with 1:41 left in regulation.


Speaker to discuss equality

Terrence Roberts, one of the first black students to study at a previously all-white school, will speak to Ball State University students about improving human relations. Tatum Rucker, graduate assistant for the Multicultural Center, said Roberts' lecture was part of a week of events honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.


WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals set winning pace during weekend

Down 5-2 in the first set of the No. 1 singles match against Allysa Detroy from the University of Dayton Saturday, Sophie Quist could have allowed six months of shoulder tendonitis pain to wear her down to a frustrating defeat. Instead, the sophomore came all the way back to win the first set in nine-point tiebreaker and cruised the rest of the way for a 7-6 (9), 6-3 victory against Detroy in the Ball State University women's tennis team's 6-1 season-opening victory against Dayton (0-2) Saturday.


MEN'S BASKETBALL: BSU beats EMU 64-60 as freshman scores 20

With more than six minutes to go in Ball State University's closely matched game with Eastern Michigan University Saturday, Cardinals' senior guard Peyton Stovall picked up his fourth foul and joined fellow captain Anthony Newell, also with four fouls, on the bench.
