WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards win third straight MAC match

The Ball State University women's volleyball team made it three in a row in conference play by defeating the University at Buffalo 25-21, 26-28, 25-23, 25-20. Freshman setter Brittany McGinnis said the win against the Bulls was a good test for her team after the long weekend, which began with Thursday night's 3-0 win at the University of Toledo.

Every once in a while, a truly great writer will grace us with his presence here at Ball State University. When these writers come, students will go to see them, especially when tempted with extra credit, but often, these writers go rather unappreciated on our campus.


'HvZ' players need tips to survive game

Now that a new season of Humans vs. Zombies has begun Monday, here are some tips for players to survive until the game ends Sunday: -Try not to travel in large groups. The ideal group size is between five and seven people. If players travel in large packs, it slows the group down, and members have a better chance of becoming zombies.



FOOTBALL: Ball State improves to 6-0 for first time since 1965

Ball State used its first shutout since the 2000 season and four second-half touchdowns to improve to 6-0 for the first time since 1965. The No.-29 ranked Cardinals spoiled Toledo's homecoming with a 31-0 victory Saturday night. It was their first shutout since a 29-0 victory against Connecticut in the 2000 season finale.


Football: Cards ranked No. 25 in new AP Poll

Less than 24 hours after getting its first shutout win in eight years, the Ball State University football team now has another reason to be happy. The Cardinals received 97 votes and are ranked No. 25 in the newest Associated Press Poll released Sunday afternoon.


Digital policy conference a success

When Kevin Jones heard in his economics class about the Digital Policy Institute's conference, he signed up immediately. The junior telecommunications major said he was interested in hearing executives from prominent companies discuss important issues about digital policy.

The pressure seems to be mounting on Ball State University's football team each week following a win. The Cardinals are not only in the midst of their best start to a season in 20 years. They are also one of 18 teams in the country that remain undefeated.



Author to talk about writing professionally

Ball State University students and Muncie community members will have the opportunity to meet author Bill Barich on Monday when he visits the campus as part of a cross-country tour. Barich will lead an informal discussion about his writing career on Monday afternoon, followed by a reading and book signing.


Unique showmanship drives genre-jumping performance

People began packing into John R. Emens Auditorium on a cool, autumn evening. Excitement lurked in the air. "Are you guys ready for Umphrey's?" a concertgoer said as he took his seat in the auditorium. Hundreds of people cheered in agreement. Umphrey's McGee, a rock band that originated in South Bend 10 years ago, played its first Muncie show Friday, and fans were pumped.


WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cards ready for season's first road tournament

Ball State University women's tennis coach Kathy Bull had the task of preparing her team to get ready for the first match of the year last week. She has a tougher duty this weekend. The team is competing in its first away match on five-days rest. The Cardinals travel to the Queen City Collegiate Invitational hosted by the University of Cincinnati.


SOCCER: Cards look to stay intense

This week's practices for the Ball State University soccer team have looked a lot like rugby. After a 3-0 loss to Central Michigan University a week ago, the team's worst loss in two years, the Cardinals (5-5-0, 1-1-0 Mid-American Conference) raised their intensity to rebound with a 3-0 win against Eastern Michigan University.



CHEERLEADING: Sophomore OK after injury at practice

A Ball State University cheerleader who left practice Thursday night in an ambulance is doing OK. Allison Richards fell from a cheerleading pyramid a little after 10 p.m. Thursday while practicing with the all-girls cheerleading squad in Worthen Arena, according to a report from the Ball State University Police Department.


OUR VIEW: Register now

Election Day is less than a month away, but if you're not registered to vote, you're about to hit a wall. Today is the last day to register in Indiana. Around the state, Hoosiers are showing they care about this election: A record-setting 540,000 residents have registered or updated their registrations this year.


Voter registration deadline Monday

Monday is the deadline for people to register to vote in the Nov. 4 general election. Mary Kuzma, clerk for Delaware County's Voter's Registration Office, said the office has counted at least 3,000 more registered voters than the primary in May. "People are very passionate on both sides," Kuzma said.


OUR VIEW: Business graveyard

BoRics Family Haircare Center has closed after 15 years in the Village. With banners faded from age, the building itself was unobtrusive, making it easy for people to walk by without noticing it. But after more than a decade, it established itself as a Village monument, considering houseflies have outlived some Village businesses.


Muncie Music Fest to rock downtown Muncie

Fall is definitely the season of music festivals, especially in the melodious Muncie. Muncie Music Fest will kick off Saturday in downtown Muncie along a fair stretch of Walnut Street. Many local venues are taking part in this festivity, including the Launching Pad, the Living Room, Doc's Music Hall, The Fickle Peach, The Blue Bottle, The Artist Within and The Heorot.


Umphrey's Mcgee

Umphrey's McGee bassist Ryan Stasik said the difference between playing live shows at colleges versus other venues was "the drinking." The popular progressive rock band will play John R. Emens Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. for its first show in Muncie. The band formed in 1997 when guitarist/vocalist Brendan Bayliss, keyboardist Joel Cummins, former drummer Mike Mirro and Stasik met at Notre Dame University and became a successful jam band in the South Bend area.
