OUR VIEW: Pay it forward

Committee to begin planning

More than seven months before the events they plan, the Homecoming Steering Committee was appointed. Michele Johnson, director of alumni special events, said after an application and interview process she and other committee advisers chose the 16 members of the 2008 committee.


Donations to increase from 06-07

The Ball State University Foundation has raised more than $11.5 million in the first half of the year, almost 70 percent of the amount raised all of last year, according to its mid-year report. "We're excited about the future and greater support," Ben Hancock, vice president for university advancement, said.

MEN'S GOLF: BSU finishes 13th at UNT Classic

Even though the weather was warm and sunny, the Ball State University men's golf team finished 13th out of 14 teams in its trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Playing internationally for the first time in collegiate competition, the Cardinals competed at the Flamingos Golf Club.

When students launch shots of hard liquor into caffeinated energy drinks, they are in for more than just a buzz, according to David Pearson, director of the strength and research laboratory. Mixing stimulants with alcohol is a more dangerous practice than alcohol consumption alone, he said.

SOFTBALL: Inconsistent play dooms Ball State

Kyle Shaner n Sports Editor With a 1-4 weekend at the Easton Tiger Classic tournament this weekend, coach Craig Nicholson said a lack of consistency plagued the Ball State University softball team in its first games of the season. "The biggest thing was we were very inconsistent from one game to the next and even one inning to the next," Nicholson said.


Four NSCS volunteers help Muncie Mission

Four members of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars volunteered their efforts to help the less fortunate in Muncie and around the world Saturday morning. Nicole Rambeau, Lauren Steinmetz, Dan Sullivan and Nicole Tavernier participated in NSCS's February service project at Muncie Mission's New Life Center.


Toga party raises $200 for Greek Week

In the basement of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity's house, people in togas stood around a table set up for games of root beer pong. Sophomore Ryan Harkleroad was watching his opponent shoot his ping-pong ball and put it into Harkleroad's final cup. "They're a bunch of cheaters," he said in the relaxed atmosphere as the disk jockey upstairs blared music.

According to the New York Post, the season ending show of "Zoey 101" averaged 7.3 million viewers, which was more than double Nickelodeon's season average. Presumably, the increase was due to the bombshell news of 16 year-old star Jamie Lynn Spears' untimely pregnancy.


THE BOGEYMAN: Makeover would take Muncie far

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about the ugly strip along McGalliard: the litter, signage and unappealing concrete. It's about time the city of Muncie begins to turn IN-332 into a welcoming, appealing, pedestrian-friendly center of commerce. More specifically, the city should rework the median to include greenspace and trees, regulate of the out-of-control signs, repave the strip and rework the curbs to include roadside parking and easy traffic.


MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Midwest upset

In December coaches from the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association predicted the Ball State University men's volleyball team to finish the season in fifth place. Following Friday's match, Cardinals' players said teams and coaches in the conference need to rethink the preseason rankings.


5 fraternity members punished

An investigation of Delta Tau Delta fraternity has determined that about five members of the organization violated an alcohol prohibition, Interfraternity Council President Cody Willis said. According to a press release from the fraternity's headquarters, the Ball State University chapter is not allowed to have alcohol on its property until August 2009.


MEN'S GOLF: Cards start season-opening tourney 13th

Competing at the Flamingos Golf Club in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, the Ball State University men's golf team opened the 2008 spring season with its first tournament in program history outside the United States. After 36 holes, the Cardinals are in 13th place.


GREAT WHITE HYPE: Criticism of Dave Boos unwarranted

Over the last few weeks there have been a lot of people commenting on Ball State women's volleyball coach Dave Boos. The comments were spurred by the announcement that four players were quitting the program, or in all actuality kicked off. I've been appalled but yet not surprised by the people who have used this opportunity to bash Boos.


Students to have vigil for NIU

Four days after a gunman opened fire in a crowded lecture hall at Northern Illinois University, killing five people and himself, Ball State University students have begun to rally support from 300 miles away. Sophomore Zach Brubaker said he and a friend are organizing a candlelight vigil to support students at Northern Illinois.
