THE BOGEYMAN: Shift in thought causes less care in local elections

With Election Day swiftly approaching, let's take a break from thinking about Muncie's problems and talk about the election. First, a refresher on how national elections work. The term of the president is four years. The term of each senator is six years. And the term of each representative is two years.



BEWILDERED SOCIETY: Note to bicyclists:

Your "ride" does not have bumpers. I've lost track of the times I've seen a bicyclist nearly make contact with someone or something else during walks along McKinley Avenue. And not crotch rockets, I mean pedal-powered mountain bikes and similar sets of wheels cruising down Ball State University's sidewalks.


BSU scrutinizes Health Center lot

A new sign for an old policy has left the Amelia T. Wood Health Center and Ball State University Police Department in disagreement about what the parking regulations should be for the clinic. Graduate student Pelagia Konstantinidis received a parking ticket for not having a valid permit when she parked in the lot behind the Health Center.


SGA pursues changes

Senators got straight to work during Wednesday's Student Government Association meeting discussing issues they want to fix at Ball State University. Secretary Ebony Strong reminded senators the SGA October Social would be 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 29 at Cardinal Lanes in the L.


Companies sink teeth into presidential campaigns

Patrice King is used to getting free products for special occasions such as holidays and elections because her dad was a manager at Kellogg's Co. With other food and drink businesses creating products to get interested in the presidential election, it is no surprise Baskin-Robbins Inc.



Democrats to host education forum

The University Democrats will hold a forum on education issues at 8:30 p.m. in the David Letterman Communication and Media Building Room 125. A surrogate from the Obama campaign will attend to discuss issues pertaining to education and affordable college tuition.


Employee appeals BSU suit

A two-year court battle between Ball State University and one of its employees will continue for at least another year. A U.S. District Court ruled in favor of Ball State in the case of Vance v. Ball State on Sept. 10. Ball State employee Maetta Vance filed a lawsuit against the university and four of its employees Oct.


FIELD HOCKEY: Coach's job status remains unknown

The Ball State University field hockey team snapped its school-record, 11-game losing streak Sunday, but coach Annette Payne's job still appears to be in jeopardy. Athletics director Tom Collins did not say Payne's job was in danger, but gave no reassurances either.


Scenarios recreate life of poverty

The Wiscott family had $1,846 a month in income but had $1,870 of monthly expenses. The grandmother made $9.50 an hour working 40 hours as a cashier. The grandfather received $500 a month in disabilities. The two raised their 9-year-old granddaughter and their recently diagnosed ADHD 7-year-old grandson because the mother was in jail for drug use and the father could not be found.



WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards sweep visiting IPFW

The Ball State University women's volleyball team swept IPFW 25-18, 25-22, 26-24 tonight in Worthen Arena. "I thought we controlled that match pretty well," coach Dave Boos said. "I thought it was a pretty good match for us, overall." The Cardinals (9-14, 4-4 Mid-American Conference) were led by middle blocker Alisha Green and opposite side attacker Elaina Kakatolis.


FOOTBALL: From MAC laughing stock to among the nation's best, all in 4 years

When fifth-year senior Dan Gerberry looks at his younger teammates, he often can't help but flash a grin. Through eight weeks, the freshmen on Ball State University's football team haven't lost a game. The Cardinals' sophomores have a 14-6 career record and shared in the excitement of a bowl game in their first season.

The wind whips through your hair as the cold rain pelts your face. Mucus drains out of your nose as the next coughing fit sets in. It's cold. You're sick. And you're walking to the Amelia T. Wood Health Center because there are no parking spots available and you don't want to gamble with Parking Services.


OUR VIEW: Community bridge

For almost a century, Ball State University has sat isolated on its own island in Muncie. Leaving campus was an adventure seldom journeyed. Building bridges between the university and Muncie has been a goal for the two entities, but often those bridges collapse.



BSU Alumni Association sponsors online events

As Ball State University continues to boast of technological endeavors, the Alumni Association has added to the school's list of cutting-edge efforts. Using Second Life, a virtual world, Ball State is inviting alumni to tour the campus on "Ball State Island," a complete regeneration of the school online including Shafer Tower, Music Instruction Building and Bracken Library.


SOCCER: Offense clicks for Cards

Even with an undefeated weekend, the Ball State University soccer team did not get the production it had hoped for this weekend. The Cardinals (8-7-1, 4-3-1 Mid-American Conference) tied the University of Akron (7-7-1, 2-5-1 MAC) 2-2 Sunday after beating Ohio University (3-9-3, 2-4-2 MAC) 2-0 Friday.


Conference explores open building

Influential figures in the architectural field from around the globe will visit Ball State University's campus this week for an international conference. The College of Architecture and Planning will play host to Education for an Open Architecture, a conference that will feature lectures from professionals, student and professional work in open-ended architecture and an award presentation for an international student contest.


FOOTBALL: Cards try to get youth at Saturday's game

Four days from playing its first home football game as a nationally ranked team, the No. 20 Ball State University football team is making an effort to get the youth to Scheumann Stadium. The athletics department announced Monday it will participate in the Take a Kid to the Game program during Saturday's game against Eastern Michigan University.


SWIMMING AND DIVING: Boilermakers too hot for BSU to handle in pool

Both the Ball State University men's and women's swimming and diving teams took second place Saturday at the Indiana Intercollegiate. Both teams finished behind Purdue University and ahead of the University of Indianapolis and IUPUI in their first multiteam meet of the season.

The Ball State University women's volleyball team gets a break in its Mid-American Conference schedule tonight when it hosts IPFW at Worthen Arena. The Cardinals (8-14, 4-4 MAC) have lost three straight conference matches and are hoping to get back to their winning ways tonight against the Mastodons.
