U.S. energy future bleak for students

Michael Hicks is a skeptic. He said he hasn't heard a realistic goal to get America off of foreign oil yet. As the Director of the Bureau of Business research at Ball State University and a published author on alternative and traditional energy, he keeps looking - especially to the political arena - to no avail.

FOOTBALL: Having a hand in everything

Trey Buice sprinted from Western Kentucky University's health center, across Avenue of Champions, to Smith Stadium until he heard news that stopped him in his tracks. The doctors told him he had a broken left hand. It required surgery. He had to watch the rest of the game from the sidelines.


Former student receives 6 months in jail

A former Ball State University student will spend six months in jail after she was sentenced Thursday in a beating case from fall 2007. Amanda Polson, 20, received a one-year sentence, six months of which will be on probation after she pleaded guilty to the charge of criminal recklessness resulting in serious bodily injury, a Class D felony.


Four laptops stolen on campus in five days

University Police Department issued a "friendly reminder" to the Ball State University community to keep an eye on personal belongings Wednesday night. UPD sent an e-mail warning that four laptop computers were stolen in the past five days. Director of Public Safety Gene Burton said the department noticed the thefts happened in the same manner, resulting from people leaving the computers unattended in dining halls, study rooms and unlocked dorm rooms.



BASKETBALL: Cards' women predicted to win MAC West

For the third consecutive season, the Ball State University women's basketball team was predicted to win the Mid-American Conference West Division Thursday by the media. The Cardinals received 129 votes in the preseason poll. Northern Illinois University, which was predicted to finish second, received 89 points.


SOCCER: Cardinals beat Miami, advance to MAC tournament

The Ball State University soccer team beat Miami University 1-0 Thursday to secure a spot in the Mid-American Conference tournament. Emily Rein scored the one goal for the Cardinals off a header in the second half. Ball State will play the winner of Thursday's Central Michigan University-Eastern Michigan University game.

Fans choiceNATE DAVIS Receiving 44 votes and 65 percent of the popular vote, quarterback Nate Davis was this week's Fan Choice Player of the Week. Davis had two passing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown in the Cardinals' 38-16 win against Eastern Michigan on Saturday.


SOCCER: Cards start tournament early

Although the Mid-American Conference Tournament does not start until Sunday, the Ball State University soccer team is treating today's game like the tournament has already started. The Cardinals (8-9-1, 4-5-1 MAC) enter today's game against Miami University (6-10-1, 5-5 MAC) fighting to secure a spot in the MAC Tournament.

Mark Twain said politicians make such poor stewards of government that it's strange we always want to put one at the head of it. People still feel that way today. We all know the best person for the job of president of the United States is seldom dim-witted enough to pursue it, so we're forced to wonder about the motives of those who are willing to do anything - no matter how devoid of ethical and moral fiber - to achieve it.

The search for a job after graduation may not be affected by the cloudy economic forecast, experts say. But, finding a job pertaining to a student's major will be. This year, unemployment in the United States has risen from 4.9 to 6.1 percent, the largest spike since 2001.


Indiana Public Radio and Ball State to recreate famous 'War of the Worlds' radio broadcast

Oct. 30, 1938. The Spanish Orchestra in the Park Plaza, in New York City, is interrupted in the middle of a tango for a news broadcast. "Ladies and gentlemen, we interrupt our program of dance music to bring you a special bulletin from the Intercontinental Radio News..." Although announcements of the special broadcast were made prior to its airing, those who had not heard them reacted in a way that shook the whole country.

Former student enters guilty plea

A former Ball State University student arrested in connection with a battery at an off-campus party last year pleaded guilty this week. Kari Streib, 21, pleaded guilty Monday to the charge of criminal recklessness resulting in serious bodily injury - a Class D felony.


FOOTBALL: ESPN announces broadcasting crew for BSU-NIU game

College football fans who watch ESPN will see some familiar faces Wednesday when the Ball State University football team plays Northern Illinois University on ESPN2. The crew of Reece Davis, Mark May, Lou Holtz and Rob Stone will announce the game for ESPN2, which will begin at 8 p.


OUR VIEW: Red, white and BOO

Instead of orange and black this year, it's all about the red, white and blue. With the amount of media coverage the presidential race has gotten in recent months (or years), Election Day seems like a bigger holiday than Halloween. Let's face it, this is one of the most important elections our nation has had in decades, and it will probably be the most important for years to come.


OUR VIEW: Healthy?

Welcome to the group of the unhealthy. We drink more and are more obese than our parents' generation, according to research conducted by the Centers for Disease Control. But it's OK because we smoke less. As of the age of 18, we become part of the group the CDC reports as being most likely to not receive medical care, prescriptions, mental health and dental care because of cost.

Coach - Randy Litchfield 1989-2006; 373-179 overall First in program history in wins (373) and winning percentage (.676) Led his team to 13 20-win seasons and six Mid-American Conference Championships. Five-time MAC Coach of the Year (1991, 1993, 1994, 1999 and 2002).


MEN'S GOLF: BSU disappointed as it finishes 17th

In its last tournament of the fall season the Ball State University men's golf team finished 17th out of 18 teams at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M. The Cardinals shot a team-combined score of 893, 32 strokes behind first place New Mexico State University.
