WOMEN'S TENNIS: Frustrated Cards fall

As Sophie Quist was sidelined for the Ball State University women's tennis team's match against Butler University on Wednesday, head coach Kathy Bull said the Cardinals were missing more than their No. 1 singles player and half of their No. 2 doubles team.



WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Player to transfer to BSU from Minnesota

A player from the University of Minnesota women's volleyball team announced Tuesday she is transferring to Ball State University next season to play for the Cardinals. Rachelle Hagerty said got a scholarship and will enroll at Ball State in the fall after playing at Minnesota for two seasons.


TRACK AND FIELD: Four athletes earn first team All-MAC

Four Ball State University track and field athletes were rewarded for their performance at the Mid-American Conference indoor championships with spots on the All-MAC first team. Senior Terri Abraham, sophomore Ali Bishel and freshmen Ra'Jae Marable and Thekla Lorenz each won an event at the conference championships to earn a spot on the MAC team.


WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cards take winning streak into match

The Ball State University women's tennis team will play host to Butler University at 1 p.m. at the Muncie YMCA Tennis Center. The Cardinals (6-3) are riding a three-match winning streak after losing 7-0 to No. 28 Indiana University on Feb. 17. Butler (5-7), which is also in the midst of a three-match winning streak following its 7-0 sweep of the University of Dayton on Sunday, returns two all-Horizon League players from last season.


Slates battle for votes

Jabs, laughs and heated responses filled the all-slate debate Monday night as Andrews-Albritton '08 and Campus Alliance tried to convince students why they would be the best slate to lead Student Government Association. Like the Feb. 21 presidential vice-presidential debate, each slate was given two minutes to respond to a question.

Car collides with train

A 1992 Mercury Cougar ran a signal at the intersection of East McGalliard Road and North Broadway Avenue, colliding with a Norfolk-Southern freight train. Crash Investigator Kyle Temple said the train's conductor reported the crash at 9:20 p.m. The train struck the car's passenger side, pushing the vehicle for 1,000 feet before coming to a stop, he said.


SOCCER: Ball State fills coaching vacancy

A coaching search that took almost two months ended Monday as an assistant coach from Virginia Tech was named the head coach of the Ball State University soccer team. Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins announced the hiring of Michael Lovett, who was an assistant at Virginia Tech the past two seasons, to fill the void left by the departure of former coach Michelle Salmon.


Athlete arrested on suspicion of DWI

A Ball State University football player was released on $1,000 bond from Delaware County Jail after being arrested on charges of two Class C misdemeanors, according to jail officials. Police arrested Kenny Meeks about 2:20 a.m. Sunday on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and operating with a blood-alcohol content of .



SOCCER: Ball State assistant unsure of her future after announcement

With the hiring of Michael Lovett as the Ball State University soccer coach Monday, Abby Richter lost her title as interim head coach and possibly her job at Ball State. Richter became the interim head coach when Michelle Salmon left Ball State to take the head coaching position at the University of Cincinnati Jan.

Night classes tonight will be canceled, Ball State officials said. The university will remain open and tonight's events will continued as scheduled.


WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: McDonald named MAC West player of week

Fresh off her record-breaking performance against Western Michigan University, Audrey McDonald was named Mid-American Conference West Division player of the week Monday. McDonald scored all of her career-high 27 points on her school-record nine 3-pointers, leading the Ball State University women's basketball team to a 74-69 home victory Saturday against the Broncos.


Faculty learn policy

Some department members attended training seminars for the smoking ban policy Monday to learn how to file $50 citations targeting violators. Thomas Morrison, associate vice president for human resources and state relation, said a smoking ban notification and smoking ban citation form were sent to department chairpersons, directors, deans and university police.



Student-run agency creates crisis plan

A small room in the Art and Journalism Building houses more than 60 students, seven of whom are creating the crisis communication plan for the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. IDHS asked Cardinal Communications, a student-run, interdisciplinary public relations agency, to create the plan that details the process for communication in a time of crisis, associate professor of journalism Bob Pritchard said.


Health Ed. has safety series

Students traveled to five exotic locations a week before Spring Break while in the confines of the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Monday. Health Education's Destination: Spring Break kicked off the Spring Break Safety Series, health educator Lisa Thomason said.


MEN'S BASKETBALL: Stovall plays last home game

Senior guard Peyton Stovall has spent more time on the basketball court than any Ball State University player in the past 25 years. Only Ray McCallum is ahead of Stovall on the school's all-time list for minutes played. However, tonight's game against Northern Illinois University will mark Stovall's final 40 minutes in Worthen Arena.

Ball State University named Michael Lovett, a former assistant at Virginia Tech, as its new head soccer coach today. OUR VIEW: 'Smoke free'

We've seen smokers ignore the 30 foot perimeter. We've seen smokers throw their butts on the ground. Most people just walked through the cloud of smoke, coughed a little and moved on with their lives. Ball State University officials, however, decided to implement laughable regulations for smokers that go into effect March 17.
