BSU names candidates for director

After months of research and investigation, Dean of Students Karl Beeler announced the candidates for the director of Ball State University's Multicultural Center. Beeler said he had two candidates, Patricia Lovett and S.G. Carthell. He said he would hold an open forum for each of them as the last step in the interview process.



FOOTBALL: Cardinals discover new offensive deep threat

As Ball State University's football players took the field Wednesday night, they received an emotional lift when they met their injured teammate Dante Love. "Dante's a friend of all of ours, and it's always nice to see him," fifth-year senior receiver Louis Johnson said.


Students present at education conference

Ball State University's Student Education Association won an award while three members gave presentations at the Indiana State Education Association Fall Conference on Saturday and Sunday at Union Station in Indianapolis. SEA president Jonathan Maple said the group won the 2007-2008 Outstanding Local Chapter Web site Award.


FOOTBALL: ESPN analyst says Ball State is BCS bowl sleeper team

Despite two non-BCS conference teams ahead of the No. 14 Ball State University in the newest standings, an ESPN analysts said the Cardinals could still crash a BCS bowl. College football analyst Robert Smith said on ESPN's "College Football Live" Sunday night that the Cardinals are a BCS bowl sleeper team after moving up two spots in this week's BCS standings.


FOOTBALL: Two Cardinals named to academic team

Two No. 14 Ball State University football players received an academic honor Monday. Defensive tackle Gonzalo Barinaga and punter Chris Miller were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V Team. To be eligible for the team, which members of the College Sports Information Directors of America select, a player must have at least a 3.

Ads unwelcome on social sites, recent Ball State study shows

Young adults are more receptive to advertisements sent via e-mail or direct mail than personalized ads on social networks such as Facebook, according to a recent study released by Ball State University and another marketing company. The report, "Messaging Behaviors Preferences and Personas," by Ball State and ExactTarget, surveyed 18- to 34-year-olds and revealed information about consumers' views of marketing messages.

Bracken Library is usually emptier on Friday than students' bank accounts are year-round. At the end of the week, many would rather relax and have fun than work on next week's homework. Empty as the residence halls on Thanksgiving, the library isn't exactly a diverse cultural mecca on that day.

Staring at the ground as two bamboo poles clicked together, sophomore Kylie Price hesitantly leaped between them and rhythmically hopped back out before the rods clamped on her foot. As she danced through the poles, the two students clicking sticks together sang a melody from Taiwan.


WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Charlie, we've got a problem:BSU loses again

The Ball State University women's volleyball team lost 3-2 (25-21, 19-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-13) to visiting University of Akron Sunday afternoon in the Cardinals' seventh five-set loss in nine opportunities. Coach Dave Boos said his team was unable to gain the momentum in a back-and-forth battle.


WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Coach not happy with defense in exhibition

Although the Ball State University women's basketball team won its exhibition game 75-69 against the Hoosier Lady Stars, coach Kelly Packard wants her team to improve on defense for the future. "I was most disappointed early on in our defensive intensity," Packard said.

And for Republicans, there are many bright lights on the path ahead of us. When I came to Muncie for orientation, I met a lot of great people and I made friendships that continue to this day.

After a nationally televised 31-point win Wednesday, the Ball State University football team is reaping the benefits in this week's poll. The Cardinals (9-0, 5-0 Mid-American Conference) jumped two spots to No. 14 in the newest Associated Press Poll released Sunday afternoon.


Art museum hopes to engage patrons

Alumni leave $1.6 million to Ball State Foundation

A $1.6 million gift from 1934 Ball State University graduates Marie and Gilbert Peart will provide students with scholarships for years to come. The university received the gift following the death of Gilbert Peart in 2007. Marie Alice Peart died in 2006.


Card games raise money for charity

Sigma Kappa sorority brought in more than $1,000 for Alzheimer's research during its annual Aces High card game tournament Friday at Irving Gym. President Abby Kaffenberger said between 30 and 45 people participated in Texas Hold'Em, Euchre and other games.


SWIMMING AND DIVING: Cards look for first conference wins of season

The Ball State University men's swimming and diving team is looking to start its Mid-American Conference schedule with a victory, while the women's team is looking to even up its record at 2-2 after two disappointing losses last weekend. The women's team plays host to the University of Akron on Friday, while both teams play host to the University at Buffalo on Saturday.


Meal plans discussed at forum

Residence Hall Association met with Director of Campus Dining Services Jon Lewis on Thursday to discuss possible changes to Ball State University's meal plan system. RHA wanted to discuss the idea of changing the dining system from the current meal equivalency system to something that operates on declining balance.
