SOFTBALL: Cardinals focus on staying sharp

With a Mid-American Conference championship on the line the next five weeks, the Ball State University softball team is using its mid-week non-conference games to stay sharp. Ball State coach Craig Nicholson said the experience of playing the non-conference games is huge for the Cardinals (20-16, 2-2 MAC) because of the youth on the team.



Students learn alcohol's effect on a person's life

Ball State University students and Muncie residents learned the effects of alcohol and how it affects a person's life during a presentation about underage drinking Monday. In coordination with the Delaware County Coordinating Council to Prevent Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse and support from Federal Drug Free Communities Grant and Strategic Framework State Incentive Grant, motivational speaker Milton Creagh spoke at The L.


Digital showcase to appear in AJ

For graduate student Lauren Peak, it all began with an e-mail about a student immersion program that was sent out in October. "I just happened to read that one," she said with a chuckle. Now she is the co-executive producer of "Evenly Odd," a webisode that premiered Monday at the Digital Exchange Showcase.


WOMEN'S GOLF: BSU finishes first for second-straight invitational title

With a 314 team score in the second round of the Tina Barrett Longwood Invite, the Ball State University women's golf team secured its second consecutive invitational title Tuesday. Ball State coach Katherine Mowat said the win was the best the Cardinals have had and was very important for the program this year and in the future.


Staff remembers slain co-worker

Staff at LaFollette Dining whisked around the residence hall's kitchen Friday morning preparing meals for the upcoming lunch rush. Operations continued like normal despite some of the employees having been among the 4,000 people who attended the wake for one of their co-workers the night before.



TRACK AND FIELD: First outdoor meet canceled

The Ball State University track and field team will have to wait another week to open its outdoor season. Due to bad weather and poor track conditions, the Rocket Team Challenge, which was scheduled for Saturday, was canceled. The University of Toledo, which was to play host to the event, reported that the meet will not be rescheduled.

You might remember him from Vote Bare, but now he's dropping a hefty log into the business toilet bowl. Senior entrepreneurship major Matt Bare made a big splash at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Friday when he pitched his idea of mailing poo to a panel of four well established entrepreneurs.


MEN'S GOLF: BSU ties for seventh in invite

Posting a 302 and 297, the Ball State University men's golf team tied for seventh in the rain-shortened Adidas Hoosier Invitational. Due to rain and wet course conditions in Bloomington, the third round of the 54-hole tournament was unable to be completed.

Speaker backs out of week of events

Greek Week kicked off Sunday, but the keynote speaker for the week of events will be absent from the festivities. Patrick Sean Smith, creator of the show "GREEK," canceled his speech, which was set for Thursday, because the show is in production, said Eric Maroun, Greek Week steering committee chairman.


WOMEN'S GOLF: BSU looks to continue momentum from win

With confidence from a win last week at the Butler Spring Invitational, the Ball State University women's golf team will look to continue the momentum into the Tina Barrett Invitational. Coach Katherine Mowat said she thinks the win from last week will help the Cardinals as they enter Monday and Tuesday's 54-hole invitational.


SOFTBALL: BSU plays with food guarantee

In its game at the University of Notre Dame today, the Ball State University softball team is guaranteed $600 and pizza. Although the contract between the universities, which was obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, says Ball State (20-16, 2-2 Mid-American Conference) will get pizza, coach Craig Nicholson said the team will likely get Jimmy John's before the game.



Clamour for Clinton

With the Indiana primary election a little more than a month away, Ball State University and Muncie have been working together to bring more political candidates to the city. Tom Morrison, Vice President of Business Affairs for Ball State, said the university and the city work together on visits from political candidates for jobs such as providing security, gathering equipment and finding venues.


150 attend chili cook-off

Contestants at the chili cook-off had their chance to impress five celebrity judges with their chili creations or put them in a sweat with the spiciest recipes they could concoct. Public Relations Student Society of America had its annual Cardinal Chili Challenge, where it served about 150 students Friday.


BASEBALL: Outfielder wins player of week award

After hitting .455 with three home runs last week, a Ball State University baseball player earned the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week award Monday. Ryan Chenoweth's offensive performance helped the Cardinals in their 4-1 week, which included a sweep of MAC preseason favorite Kent State University.


MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Bus breakdown delays Cards

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Outside attacker Todd Chamberlain and the No. 7 Ball State University men's volleyball team have a routine before each match. They usually arrive to the arena about 90 minutes before the match starts, go through stretches, practice serving and then practice kills.
