SGA approves five members to caucuses

The Ball State University Student Government Association approved five members to caucuses and Jimmy Faroh as President Pro-Tempore in its Wednesday meeting. Faroh is the brother of Michele Faroh, Team Lisec's secretary during the 2006-2007 SGA term. He, Michelle Voss and David Voelker ran for the position, but after speeches on why each one would best serve the position, senators voted Faroh would take the job.



WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: DeMuth honored with academic award

Ball State University senior Julie DeMuth was honored as part of the 2007-2008 women's basketball Academic All-Mid-American Conference team Wednesday. It was the first time DeMuth earned the accolade and the seventh consecutive season that a Ball State player made the team.


SOFTBALL: Cardinals continue inconsistent play

One day after a game in her hometown was rained out, Kamilah Holle took some of the motivation from her canceled homecoming into the softball team's next game. Holle went 3-for-4 with two home runs in the first game of a doubleheader at Wright State University Wednesday.


WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cardinals shocked by departure

When Kiley Jarrett accepted a scholarship to play basketball at Ball State University, she did so in large part because she wanted to play four years under head coach Tracy Roller. Despite playing the final half of last year without Roller on the sidelines, Jarrett said she never thought through her first three seasons with the Cardinals that she would play for any other coach.


Student creates disc golf course

A Ball State University graduate student plans to begin construction on a project this month that no one in Muncie has been approved for before. Johnny Godfrey said construction for 18-hole disc golf course at McCulloch Park is set to begin. The course will have tee boxes for both beginners and veterans of the game, he said.



Bike race comes to Ball State

The McKinley Mile Bike Race and field events will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday along McKinley Avenue and in LaFollette Field. Lynda Wiley, director of the Office of Student Life, said in the fall there was a discussion to bring back the event.


BASEBALL: BSU's bullpen comes through

Down 2-1 after the second inning, the Ball State University bullpen shut down the University of Dayton's offense for the final seven innings, allowing the Cardinals to claim a 4-2 victory Wednesday. Adam Quinn, Brenden Stines, Brad Piatt, Aaron Hammons, Heath Riley and Kyle Heyne combined to pitch the final seven innings in which the Flyers plated no runs and collected six hits to seven strikeouts.


Zombie outbreak hits BSU campus

The first mission of the campus-wide game Humans vs. Zombies began Thursday night. In the game's storyline, six months following the introduction of a new virus, the first outbreak of the zombie virus in Indiana was detected in Indianapolis. The virus has now come to the university.


MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards tune-up for OSU

Sitting on the team bus traveling to Muncie on Sunday after finishing 1-1 during a Pennsylvania road trip, coach Joel Walton said he was glad his No. 6 Ball State University men's volleyball team had two more matches before playing No. 10 Ohio State University.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Ball State sets focus on doubles play

During last weekend's matches against the University at Buffalo and the University of Akron, the Ball State University women's tennis team found itself in a hole following the opening doubles play by winning one of six doubles matches. Coach Kathy Bull said it would probably come as no surprise she was emphasizing solid doubles play in practices this week in anticipation of the Cardinals' (8-6, 1-2 Mid-American Conference) matches Friday at Eastern Michigan University and Saturday at the University of Toledo.

Filter blocks BSU Gmail

Updated spam filters for students' Ball State University e-mail accounts are recognizing some legitimate Gmail messages as spam. Loren Malm, interim assistant vice president of information technology, said the university is working with Google to fix the spam filters that are blocking students' e-mails.



SWIMMING AND DIVING: Sophomore wins university scholarship

A sophomore on the Ball State University men's swimming and diving team received $1,000 Wednesday for winning a video competition. Ryan Misener won the grand prize of the Ball State Center for Media Design's video competition for documenting student's studying habits.


TRACK AND FIELD: Cardinals begin outdoor season

As the Ball State University track and field team prepares to open its outdoor season Saturday at the Mike Poelein Invitational, athletes and coaches alike have been embracing the cold weather. Ball State assistant coach Steve Rajewsky said the low temperatures have given the coaches a chance to help prepare their athletes for any conditions.


Obama to visit Muncie next week

When freshman Mike Uehlein heard Obama's campaign was not stopping in Muncie on Friday, he said he was not as disappointed as other Obama supporters on campus about the rescheduled visit. "Honestly, he has better places to be," Uehlein, a member of Ball State Students for Barack Obama and a political science major, said.


WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Roller resigns as head coach

Citing medical reasons, Tracy Roller resigned from the women's basketball program Wednesday afternoon, leaving the team without its all-time winningest coach. The decision was made approximately one year after Roller signed a contract extension that was to pay her a minimum $728,000 and keep her with Ball State University through the 2011-2012 season.


MEN'S TENNIS: Cards prepare for battles

Despite sweeping Chicago State University in its first conference match of the season last week, coach Bill Richards said he knew his team would have to play better to win upcoming matches. As the Ball State University men's tennis team approaches away matches at the University of Notre Dame Friday and Northern Illinois University Sunday, Richards' challenge remains one of the many obstacles in the way of Ball State University and another Mid-American Conference championship.
