MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinal named freshman of the year

Middle attacker J.D. Gasparovic was named the 2008 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Freshman of the Year on Wednesday. Gasparovic had a conference-high 1.46 blocks per game and lead the No. 10 Ball State University men's volleyball team with 121 blocks.



BSU looks for possible threats

A year ago today, a student gunman on the campus of Virginia Tech University opened fire on students, killing himself and 32 people. On Valentine's Day, 10 months later, a gunman opened fire on a Northern Illinois University lecture hall, killing himself and five students.


SOFTBALL: Junior wins third pitcher of week honor

For the third time this season, Ball State University junior Tiffany Garofano earned the Mid-American Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday. Garofano had an ERA of 0.39 in her three games last week as she compiled a 2-1 record. She struck out 23 while limiting batters to nine hits in her 18 innings on the mound.


MEN'S GOLF: Coach frustrated following 11th place finish

The Ball State University men's golf team finished in 12th place out of 18 teams at the University of Kentucky Owens/Brewer Invitational. Shooting a team-combined score of 939, the Cardinals finished 40 strokes behind winner University of Central Florida. Despite poor weather conditions, coach Mike Fleck said he was disappointed by Ball State's performance.


OUR VIEW: Not forgotten

Although we might not think about it every day, the Virginia Tech shootings have undoubtedly left a lasting mark on those of us in college when it happened. Whether you scout the best escape route in your class the first day, jump every time a book falls to the floor or watch like a hawk people who walk into class late, there is likely some part of your daily life that has been affected by Virginia Tech.



LAST YEAR ON EARTH: Ball State has plenty to offer students, alums

In the past, I've been accused of being too negative with my column, and it's been suggested by a number of people that, if I don't like Ball State University, I should just transfer and stop bothering people. Firstly, I wasn't aware that this little corner of the Daily News was such an obstruction to the educational goals of this school and its 20,000 students.


BSU searches to fill dozens of vacancies

As the recently appointed dean of the College of Applied Sciences and Technology prepares to take office, university administrators are searching for several people to fill administrator's and director's positions. Provost Terry King said Ball State University had two interim deans, an interim vice president and about a dozen interim directors.


SOFTBALL: Cardinals show mercy to Hoosiers

For the second consecutive year, the Ball State University softball team used the mercy rule to defeat Indiana University in six innings. Ball State (27-21) scored eight runs while shutting out Indiana (12-28) on Tuesday to enact the eight runs through five innings mercy rule on the Hoosiers.


MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals fall to No. 10 in coaches poll

For the second consecutive week, the Ball State University men's volleyball team moved down in the coaches poll. The Cardinals (19-9, 10-2 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) dropped two spots to No. 10 in the top-15 coaches poll released Monday.



UPB brings 'Reno 911' character to Pruis Hall

The University Program Board featured comedian Kyle Dunnigan in the last presentation of the Best Night Ever comedian series this semester at 9 p.m. Monday in Pruis Hall. Dunnigan has been featured on Comedy Central's "Reno 911" as reoccurring character Craig.


SOFTBALL: Pitching staff propels Cards

One year ago against Indiana University, Elizabeth Milian pitched her second one-hitter of the season. This year the Ball State University sophomore, and her fellow Cardinal softball pitchers, are near the top of the Mid-American Conference in pitching excellence.


WOMEN'S GOLF: Ace in the holes

The odds of making a hole-in-one are about one in 12,000. Paige Esford made two the past two days. With one swing of her seven iron Monday, the Ball State University women's golfer sank her second hole-in-one in as many days at the Delaware Country Club.

Major League Baseball is all over the news, and not in a good way. It's steroids this and contracts that. In fact, it's not about baseball at all. Baseball is supposed to be America's pastime, and with opening-day matchups being its current focus, it's time that people realize what they can get out of a baseball game nowadays.



SOCCER: Ball State hires new assistant from Xavier

The winning program at Ball State University is what attracted the Cardinals' new assistant soccer coach to the university. Michael Lovett, who was hired as Ball State's head coach March 3, announced the hiring of the former Xavier University assistant coach, Amber Alexander, as his assistant coach Monday.


BASEBALL: Cards win in extra innings

An Indiana State University baseball team that was 10-games-under .500 coming into Tuesday's game gave the Ball State University baseball team all it could handle. After the first five innings saw a total of two runs scored between the two teams, there was an offensive explosion.


Ball State prepares for Obama

Despite the demand for tickets, the Barack Obama campaign said there will be no more tickets available for Saturday's town hall meeting in Irving Gym.


WOMEN'S GOLF: Record-setting season continues for Cards

Entering this season Katherine Mowat had won two tournaments in her three years as the coach of the Ball State University women's golf team. With the completion of the Cardinal Classic Monday at the Delaware Country Club, Mowat's Cardinals have won three invitationals in the last month.


Position made to oversee $235 million

The organization that manages $235 million for the university created a position to oversee that money's investment. Thomas Heck, the vice president for operations and treasurer, will be the Ball State University Foundation's first chief investment officer.


WOMEN'S GOLF: Ball State in control after first day at home

A special moment was made more special for Paige Esford Sunday by playing in a home tournament. The Ball State University sophomore got a hole-in-one on the par-3, 14th hole, the first of her career. "That was a pretty special moment, I'm not going to lie," Esford said.


Students build box town on University Green

About 150 Ball State University students endured 40-degree temperatures and strong winds as they slept under duct-taped boxes on University Green to promote awareness of poor living conditions in other regions of the world. Senior Ngofeen Mputubwele, a political science major, said he organized the "Displace Me" event for his senior thesis.
