SOFTBALL: Ball State takes hit in MAC standings with three losses

This weekend made it more difficult for the Ball State University softball team to make the Mid-American Conference tournament, but it did not ruin the Cardinals' chances. Ball State went 1-3 on the weekend, losing two games to Kent State University Friday and splitting a series against the University at Buffalo Saturday and Sunday.

MEN'S TENNIS: Ball State secures No. 2 seed in MAC with win vs. Toledo

Bobbing their heads between the final two matches Saturday, more than 25 fans didn't focus their attention on one moment until they heard a racket hit the ground. Ball State University's No. 1 singles player Jose Perdomo hit a screaming forehand past the University of Toledo's Jared Miller to clinch the second seed in the Mid-American Conference tournament, in a come-from-behind 4-3 victory.

GREAT WHITE HYPE: Columnist gives awards

With this being the last week of classes for Ball State University students, it is time to hand out some hardware (winners won't actually get hardware unless some people have trophies they feel like donating to the cause). Before we start, we first must set the guidelines for how players, coaches and teams still playing will be evaluated.

BASEBALL: Cards look to regain confidence

After a weekend that resulted in three losses for the Ball State University baseball team, coach Greg Beals decided not to give his team a day off like he normally does on Mondays. The reason was he didn't want his players to get stuck on being swept and have it affect their play this week, he said.

SPEAK SOFTLY: The plight of the fifth-year undergraduate

There is something that has been bothering me for the last few weeks. I graduated from high school four years ago this May, yet I will not be graduating from Ball State after this semester. Yes, I am one of those fifth-year seniors. But seeing as how I am not the first person to have ever been in this position and will certainly not be the last, perhaps the plight of the fifth year senior deserves some examination.

Ball State University employees determined the campus sustained no damage from Friday's 5.2 magnitued earthquake, a university official said. Layne Cameron, media relations manager, said the quake was treated as a training exercise, as if significant damage could have been done.

MEN'S TENNIS: Senior leaves BSU family as leader

As his team battled the University at Buffalo in doubles April 13, senior Danny Vidal sat on the sidelines, leaning forward in his folding chair. Preparing to play his singles opponent, Vidal's eyes were looking forward, but his mind was remembering back. During the final home stretch of Vidal's Ball State University tennis career, memories were cascading through his mind as he quietly stared off into the white walls of the YMCA tennis facility.

BASEBALL: Cardinals end up on wrong side of three-game sweep

In the course of one weekend series with Central Michigan University, the Ball State University baseball team went from tied for first place in the Mid-American Conference to three games behind the leader. The Cardinals were tied with Eastern Michigan University at 7-2 in MAC games heading into the weekend but got swept by the Chippewas 7-3, 8-6, 5-4.

SOFTBALL: BSU among top teams in program history

Entering Tuesday's games against Eastern Illinois University, the Ball State University softball team is already among the top teams in program history. Ball State (30-24, 6-8 Mid-American Conference) picked up its 30th win of the season Sunday at the University at Buffalo to become the fifth team in the program's 34-year history to reach the 30-win plateau.

The Cardinals (20-9, 10-2 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) received 97 votes, six more votes than last week, in the coaches poll that was released Monday after defeating Quincy University in their conference tournament quarterfinal match during the weekend.

SOCCER: Defense continues spring dominance

The result of Sunday's alumni game left the Ball State University soccer team a little disappointed. The Cardinals could not score a goal Sunday as their game against the program's alumni ended in a scoreless tie to end the team's spring season. "You say you want to have fun," midfielder Annie Aiello said, "but secretly you want to get the W but a tie's fine.

Senior Lisa Shipley, Ball State's Relay for Life team development chairwoman, said 38 teams registered for Ball State's fifth-annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life fundraiser, in which participants took turns walking around a track from 3 p.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals' seniors win final match of careers at home

As the only seniors on the Ball State University women's tennis team, Jennifer Pollack and Haly Calderwood have had a knack for transferring their classroom success onto the tennis courts. This fact was apparent in the Cardinals' 6-1 victory against visiting Northern Illinois University on Saturday - a senior day that featured Pollack and Calderwood both winning in their final home singles matches.

OUR VIEW: Look closely

In its search for a new head women's basketball coach, Ball State University needs to make sure it doesn't forget who's right under its nose. Tom Collins, director of Intercollegiate Athletics, is in the process of replacing Tracy Roller, who resigned April 2.

OUR VIEW: Denied

If there was going to be a time to allow an exemption from the smoking ban, it would be tonight. The Ball State Hillel, the Jewish organization on campus, is playing host to its annual hookah night fundraiser. However, instead of being centrally located at LaFollete Field to generate the most student interest the event has been banished to the Village.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Round 1

We selected the 33 players - one automatic bid from each team and 16 at-large bids - seeded them and placed them into a bracket. However now it's your turn to vote who should win The Ball State Daily New's player of the year award. Starting with the play-in game, each issue of the Daily News will be a new round of the tournament, with the championship game being April 24.
