OUR VIEW: Dinner time

Ask and you shall receive. OK, not quite. Complain, moan and gripe about the limited Dining hours for years to Student Government Association and anyone who will listen and then you shall receive. Those with meal plans should be happy to know that Fall 2008 will bring the addition of more than 100 hours to dining facilities across campus.

MEN'S GOLF: Fresh talent

At the age of 12, Ball State University men's golfer Eric Steger made a decision that forever changed his athletic career. Up until the eighth grade, Steger looked more like a baseball player than a golfer. However, because baseball and golf are both spring sports, he could only choose one sport to play.

Producer addresses faults in education

According to a new documentary, American high school students need to reshape their attitudes toward math and science in order to keep up with technologically advancing countries. Film producer Bob Compton presented his documentary, "Two Million Minutes: A Documentary Film on Global Education," Tuesday in the Art and Journalism building.

Student Center renovations to begin in June

As Ball State University seniors prepare for commencement, many staff members working in L.A. Pittenger Student Center are preparing to temporarily move out of the building following graduation to make room for renovations. Bruce Morgan, director of the Student Center and programs, said Monday that Parking Services, Student Legal Services, International Programs and all the programming offices, such as Late Nite and University Programs Board, will move their offices elsewhere on campus to clear room for the first of two phases of the renovation scheduled to begin in June.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Round 3

We selected the 33 players - one automatic bid from each team and 16 at-large bids - seeded them and placed them into a bracket. However now it's your turn to vote who should win The Ball State Daily New's player of the year award. Starting with the play-in game, each issue of the Daily News will be a new round of the tournament, with the championship game being April 24.

BASEBALL: BSU bats get back on track

The Ball State University offense got its groove back as it beat Xavier University 14-4 Tuesday. The Cardinals (22-14, 7-5 Mid-American Conference) collected 20 hits in the game and scored in all but one inning. In the three games against Central Michigan University last weekend, Ball State had 21 hits.

SOFTBALL: Cardinals rally for late victory

When Eastern Illinois University came up to bat in the eighth inning of game two Tuesday with a runner at second, it used a bunt to sacrifice the runner to third base. Ball State University pitcher Elizabeth Milian then retired the Panthers' next two batters to strand the runner at third.

BSU denies Hillel event on campus

The first request for an exemption from the smoking ban has been denied, causing the Ball State University Hillel to move its annual hookah night to Moe's Tavern on Tuesday night. Co-president Lindsay Gross said Hillel, the Jewish organization on campus, knew the smoking ban would be a problem for its hookah night fundraiser.

Hookah night hits Village

Matisyahu, a Hasidic reggae artist, played loudly from the speakers in the bottom level of Mo's Tavern on Tuesday night as the Ball State Hillel played host to its third-annual hookah night. More than 150 people attended the event, which featured more than 10 flavors of shisha for attendees to chose from.

Students build house of straw

In a field on Bethel Avenue, there sits a building made of straw. It's not something out of a fairy tale built by three pigs, but it is a new sustainable structure built during three semesters. Joseph Martin, a senior architecture and Spanish major, said the building's walls were one straw-bail wide and eight to 10 bails high.

OUR VIEW: Clean up your act

Come with me if you want to smoke. Down the stairs, out the door and around the corner. The smoking area is just this way, but you'll need a hazmat suit to enter. You see, all the debris from careless smokers' habit have grown to astronomical proportion, and in order to smoke, you must stand waist deep in butts and empty packs.

Happy Earth Day

Vendors from Ball State University, Muncie and national organizations will fill University Green Tuesday as part of the university's Earth Day celebration. Layne Cameron, Ball State media relations manager, said the event is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and it will feature activities such as a rock wall and geocaching.

FUN SIZED: Save energy; save money; save the planet

Although Earth Day has come and gone, it's still a good idea to practice living green through your use of energy. I can't help but notice that while prices to provide energy to our homes are going up, we aren't making any more money. That's not fair. While we can't call our electric companies and beg for cheaper rates, there is something we can do.

Average Joe's has successful opening

Hundreds of hungry customers piled into the dining room as smells of a new kitchen cooking food and hopes of success radiated into the atmosphere. The Muncie community welcomed its newest restaurant as Average Joe's Grill, located at the former 909 Grille site, opened to a packed house Monday led by the efforts of Ball State University alumni and students.

Day of activities to inform students on 2 organizations

Two Ball State University organizations will have their semi-annual day of activities Tuesday. Ball State Nurses Association and the Reserve Officer Training Corps will have a rock wall, blood pressure testing and food from about 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. near Ball Gymnasium, BSNA adviser Carolyn Keihn said.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Round 2

We selected the 33 players - one automatic bid from each team and 16 at-large bids - seeded them and placed them into a bracket. However now it's your turn to vote who should win The Ball State Daily New's player of the year award. Starting with the play-in game, each issue of the Daily News will be a new round of the tournament, with the championship game being April 24.

MEN'S GOLF: Coach disapointed with poor play

Although the Ball State University men's golf team was in third place with 18 holes left in the Rutherford Intercollegiate at University Park, Pa., the Cardinals finished seventh out of the 12-team field. After shooting a team-combined score of 293 and 297 in the first and second round, Ball State shot a 326 in the third round, which was the highest team score during that round.

Worth the wait

Sophomore telecommunications major Anne LaFree went to Late Nite Carnival and ended the night waiting in line for the ride "Freak Out." The ride seated 16 people and was shaped like a pendulum that swung the riders into the air while spinning them. "Up until this two hour wait in line, it's been amazing," she said.
