TRACK AND FIELD: Weekend is year's biggest

On the weekend that Ball State University track and field head coach Randy Heisler calls "the biggest weekend of the year" in college track and field, the Cardinals are headed to Indianapolis for the Stan Lyons Invitational. About 50 teams have been invited to the meet on the IUPUI campus, and although not all are likely to show, Heisler said, he thinks the competition will be plentiful.



MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cardinals win, play for MIVA title Saturday

Ball State University men's volleyball team will play in the conference championship match. The Cardinals defeated No. 15 Lewis University 30-28, 30-26, 27-30, 31-29 in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament semifinals on Thursday in Columbus, Ohio.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Old foes meet again

Every day coach Joel Walton makes sure he has a championship ring on his ring finger. Having one four-year college letterman ring and Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association championship rings from 1995, 1997 and 2002 as a coach, he said wearing one of those rings has become staple of his wardrobe.



BASEBALL: Purdue shuts down Ball State offense

The Ball State University baseball team's offensive struggles returned Wednesday as it lost 3-1 at Purdue University. The Cardinals (22-15, 7-5 Mid-American Conference) were coming off a 20 hit, 14 run game against Xavier University but managed seven hits and almost got shut out against the Boilermakers.


Dining hours to increase

Starting Fall Semester 110.5 hours will be added to various Dining locations around campus. Director of Dining Jon Lewis said Dining had considered increasing the number of hours for a few years with the goal of providing Ball State University students as many hours as possible.


Man arrested for abusing squirrel

Three minors found themselves in a squirrelly situation Monday when Ball State University police caught them abusing a dead animal. Muncie resident Robert Dennis, 18, was released from Delaware County jail early Tuesday on $2,000 bond after he was arrested after police say he abused a dead squirrel and filmed it with a cell phone, according to jail and police reports.


54 students volunteer

Ninety-six percent of the graduate students at the center have participated in community service this year, Steve Jones, director of the Center for Information and Communication Sciences, said. The center has 54 graduate students and all but two of them spent at least one hour per week Fall Semester helping local non-profit organizations, he said.



WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: BSU gets 40 applications for position

At the end of a two-week application period for the new women's basketball coaching position, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins said Wednesday he has received 40 resumes for the job. Applicants can still register their resumes until the job is filled, Collins said, but he and his senior staff of Karin Lee, Pat Quinn and Matt Wolfert began reviewing applications Tuesday.


SGA passes legislation

In the last meeting of the semester, Ball State University Student Government Association senators passed two pieces of legislation and approved three people to Student Senate. One piece of legislation would integrate the services of the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid and the Ball State Bookstore.


Minors caught throwing rocks

Educational technology instructor Kina Cunningham was talking to friends near an elevator in McKinley Parking Garage when three middle-school-aged children walked by carrying what appeared to be a cinder block. A few minutes later, Cunningham and her two friends heard a thump come from the top of the parking structure, she said.


Project teaches students how zoos work

This semester zoology and biology students were involved in an immersion learning class with the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo to create videos for displays and do research that benefited the zoo. Professor of Biology Gary Dodson said the immersion project was aimed at helping students become involved and learning how zoos work.

Student's video wins electric car

Pedestrians on campus can see a new electric car zip across the university because a Ball State University student won a scholarship contest. Junior architecture major Jagjeet Singh Chahal received a $1,000 scholarship and a 100 percent electric car for Ball State during the university's Earth Day celebration Tuesday on University Green.


No decision made on retrial

More than two months after plaintiff's attorneys filed for a retrial, a U.S. District Court judge is still deciding on the fate of the McKinney v. Duplain civil case. According to the U.S. District Court Clerk's Office, Judge Richard Young had made no formal decision as of Wednesday afternoon whether the trial, which has cost Ball State University more than $1 million thus far, will go back to court.

Biggest loser

Like all the other Ball State University Biggest Loser teams, the Heavyweights started with four members. Early in the competition, however, the team gradually lost half its members - a fact that falls in line with the national trend in people starting any weight loss program.


Cleaning crews work to keep cigarette butts off ground

More than a month after Ball State University implemented its smoking ban, administrators say enforcement has gone smoothly, but a new concern has arisen for smokers and the university - cleanliness of smoking areas. Thomas Morrison, associate vice president for human resources, said one of the main reasons the policy was instituted was the cigarette debris that covered parts of campus.
