Reaping the rewards of her work

After a two-game road swing, the Ball State University women's basketball team returns to the winning surroundings of Worthen Arena to take on the University of North Dakota in a non-conference game. The Cardinals (12-7, 5-1 MAC) cannot gain position or slide in the Mid-American Conference standings against the Fighting Sioux (10-9), but coach Kelly Packard said she looks at the game as an opportunity for her team to progress.


Drivers staying safe despite snowy conditions

The slick snow has made driving conditions hazardous on roads close to Ball State University, but drivers have been successful in steering clear of major accidents. "It's been quiet so far," Indiana State Police trooper Jarrod Alexander said. "We haven't had any major accidents since the snow started falling.

Firefighters respond to false alarm at LaFollette

Firefighters were called to Brayton/Clevenger halls in LaFollette Complex about noon today in response to a fire alarm. Students who were in the building were evacuated and accounted for by residence assistants outside the building. After more than 30 minutes, students were allowed to reenter the residence hall.


Landlines to stay at BSU; others phase them out

Heidi Prater lay in her room, sick and helpless. She picked up her cell phone and tried to call someone to help her, but it didn't have a signal. She reached for the landline, dialed the number and a friend quickly arrived to help. Many universities throughout the country are deactivating landlines in student housing because of the unnecessary cost and so many students using cell phones, according to an Associated Press article.


SWIMMING AND DIVING: Splashing into record book

The last time a Ball State University swimmer broke the women's 200-yard breaststroke record, Emily Haifley was learning her ABC's in her kindergarten class. Now a freshman at Ball State, Haifley entered her name in the record books, shattering the 13-year-old record by two seconds by swimming a 2:19.


MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State bounced out of rankings

For the first team this season, the Ball State University men's volleyball team will play a match as an unranked team. The Cardinals dropped out of the top 15 in the newest coaches poll released Monday following four-game loses to No. 1 Pennsylvania State University and then-unranked St.



150 lives worth remembering

Rows upon rows of weathered combat boots, some decorated with roses and photographs, others bearing only a name tag, lay gravely in the lobby of the David Letterman Communication and Media Building on Monday. HALL OF FAME: Routine of excellence

Routine has always been important for former Ball State University football coach Paul Schudel. But he is willing to make a trip to Muncie to join the Ball State Athletics Hall of Fame. Schudel compiled a 68-40-4 record from 1985-94 at Ball State and is now the offensive line coach of Division III Albion College in Michigan.


Unity Week wraps up

As the Unity Pageant ended Saturday afternoon, Ball State University alumnus Ivy McConnell looked at the 10 contestants and noticed something was missing from the event. Each of the contestants who stood in line on stage were black. McConnell said she realized the pageant itself could be truer to its title of "Unity".


MEN'S TENNIS: Newcomer lone bright spot for Cardinals

The Ball State University men's tennis team's 6-1 loss Saturday had some bright spots. For instance, playing No. 16 University of Michigan which won its second match of the night, although the Cardinals avoided a shutout thanks to a new teammate. Cliff Robinson, who is from South Africa and has been on the Cardinals' roster for two weeks, defeated Mike DePeitro 6-4, 6-1 in the No.


Recruitment begins today

Informal Sorority Recruitment starts today and will have activities for women interested in joining sororities all week. The events are open to any female students who did not complete Fall recruitment or who want to join a sorority, said Jennifer Eakins, Panhellenic Council vice president of public relations and Phi Mu fraternity pledge educator.
