WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards defeat Sioux in overtime

The University of North Dakota women's basketball team leads Ball State University 39-36 at halftime. Leading all scorers is Cardinals' junior forward Danielle Gratton with 17 points and seven rebounds. Gratton is playing for the second straight game wearing a face guard after a suffering a broken nose against Northern Illinois.


File sharing punishments change

Sharing music is no less illegal than a week ago, but Ball State University students no longer need to fear a lengthy, expensive trial. The Recording Industry Association of America now informs file-sharing violators instead of immediately prosecuting. The organization forwards information to Internet Service Provider, who will sanction users.


Students slow down for snow day

There was supposed to be a rush at about 11 a.m. on Wednesday in the Barnes and Noble Cafe. Instead, the student hot spot was empty. Its seats were as vacant as the classes on campus. Ball State University canceled classes after more than 10 inches of snow fell on central Indiana early Wednesday morning, according campus-wide e-mails and text messages sent out by Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communications Tony Proudfoot.


'Superfoot' gets inducted

During the 1987 season, Ball State University football coach Paul Schudel did not like kicking field goals. The Cardinals tried to kick a few field goals early in the season, but they could not find anyone consistent enough to make them. "We tried a couple early, and we couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with a bass fiddle," Schudel said.



Students propose ice rink

When Brian Kirschner heard of an ice rink closing behind Muncie's Horizon Convention Center, an idea struck him: have Ball State University purchase it. Kirschner, a senior construction management major, said he heard about the closed rink from a friend, who works at the Muncie Children's Museum across the street.

Junior exercise science major Andrew Ryan woke up for his 9 a.m. class Wednesday and wondered how Ball State University could possibly have classes. He checked his e-mail several times before he had to leave, he said, and nothing had been sent leading him to believe he would have class.


Audiology Clinic offers custom-made earbuds

Ball State University's Audiology Clinic has found a solution for uncomfortable, store-bought earbuds that don't fit ears. The clinic is offering custom-made earbud adapters to students for $75. Students interested will have impressions taken of their ears at the time of purchase.


Forum addresses issues of Iraq war

About 25 students and military veterans gathered in the David Letterman Communication and Media Building to discuss several aspects of the Iraq war. Topics in the forum included the economic impact of the war, the behavior of servicemen and women and opinions on Sept.



SWIMMING AND DIVING: Freshman wins conference award

Five days after breaking a school record, a freshman on the Ball State University women's swimming and diving team received another honor. Freshman Emily Haifley was named the Mid-American Conference Swimmer of the Week on Wednesday. Haifley broke the Ball State record for the 200-yard breaststroke by almost two seconds in a meet against Eastern Michigan University on Saturday.


MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards drop road game to Bowling Green

The Ball State University men's basketball team lost 62-58 to host Bowling Green State University tonight in the Cardinals' first game against a Mid-American Conference East Division opponent this season. With the loss, Ball State drops to 9-9 overall and 4-2 in MAC play.


Elliot Hall's fire burns out

The tradition of a warm, crackling fire burning in Elliot Hall's north fireplace will no longer be available to students. Ball State student Leah Wood is fighting to return what she considers an "essential part" of the building to its residents. Her problem is that she has to battle Ball State University Housing and Residence Life and the university's insurance carrier.


MAC gets ESPN deal

Ball State University athletics teams will have a greater chance to appear on national television because of their conference's new television contract. The Mid-American Conference announced Wednesday it has a new eight-year contract with ESPN that will increase the network's football, men's basketball and women's basketball coverage.



Heavy snow may be ensuring motorist, pedestrian safety

The massive amount of snow that dumped on Ball State University's campus overnight and this morning may have been a headache for motorists, but it also helped keep them safe. Not only have the roads been cleared of any serious accidents, Ball State police deputy chief Bob Fife said, but his office has not investigated any accidents around the campus area this afternoon.


WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards' great escape

The Ball State University women's basketball team required an extra five minutes Tuesday night to win a rare mid-January non-conference game. Ball State defeated the University of North Dakota 88-80 in overtime to improve the Cardinals' home record to 9-1 and 13-7 overall.
