The Ball State University field hockey team returned from its two-game trip to Maryland without a win but convinced they found something to help them for the rest of the season. "The trust that we built this weekend is going to make us play better for the rest of the season," freshman midfielder Caitlin Maguire said.

Georgia is a state where football is big. The University of Georgia is typically ranked, and this year it is considered a National Champion favorite. The Atlanta Falcons have a lot of people around the state doing the 'Dirty Bird' (well maybe not lately). And then there are the high school ranks that turn out a lot of top college recruits every year.


Instructor tries new technique

Michael Gibson recently finished a building prototype that utilizes prefabrication techniques in a way that has never been done before. The Center for Media Design gave Gibson, an instructor at the College of Architecture and Planning, a grant to fund his building prototype during Spring Semester, but he didn't start working on the project until the summer.


WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Purdue pounds Cards

Ball State University women's volleyball outside hitter Julie Breivogel said her team's theme for the Active Ankle Challenge was "just go." Although the team was unable to win in three chances this weekend, Breivogel was convinced the stiff competition the team faced would pay dividends later in the season.


SOCCER: Lovett finally gets first win

After a pair of losses to begin the season, the Ball State University soccer team recorded its first win of the season and the first win for Michael Lovett as the Cardinals' coach Friday. Playing against a winless Air Force (1-4) team, which won Sunday, the Cardinals (1-4) recorded their first win of the season with a 1-0 victory Friday.



Bowen Center to update site

For 24 years the Indiana State Senate's historical database has remained untouched and unnoticed. That was until Ball State University's Bowen Center for public affairs decided it was time for an update. The Bowen Center, part of the Department of Political Science, will work with the Department of History and Telecommunications to update the database and add audio and visual elements to better tell its history, Philip Sachtleben, associate vice president for government relations, said.

President Jo Ann Gora announced to a maximum-capacity crowd at Scheumann Stadium on Friday that Ball State University is more than halfway to the goal of its fundraising campaign. But it's not time to lose momentum. It's time to increase efforts so the university can surpass its goal.


FOOTBALL: Marine strikes again

Seeing his defense not executing its game plan precisely enough, Ball State University's resident Marine stood up in the locker room during halftime of Friday night's game against Navy and addressed his teammates. Using the leadership qualities he garnered in the Corps, the 32-year-old man his teammates call "Crawdaddy" - a testament to his mature age - urged the defensive unit to increase its intensity level.

The Cardinals (2-3), playing in their first home match of the season, were never able to get in a rhythm offensively, hitting .

As the minutes dwindled to John McCain's acceptance speech Thursday night, the discussion throughout Park Hall's multipurpose room ignored the analysis on CNN. In fact, the murmur soon transcended it. More than 20 people throughout the room debated policy, rhetoric and politics.


WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards can't get even against Tennessee Tech

The Ball State University women's volleyball team lost 3-2 (25-19, 25-16, 21-25, 22-25, 15-13) to Tennessee Tech University in the Cardinals' second match of the Active Ankle Challenge at Worthen Arena. The Cardinals (2-4) were unable to capitalize after coming back to win the third and fourth sets behind the serving of sophomore libero Alyssa Rio and the attacking from middles Alisha Green and Jennifer Boyd.


FOOTBALL: Ball State sinks Navy with aerial assault

In the early stages of Friday's game against Navy, it looked as though Ball State University would turn the contest into a blowout. A couple possessions later, the Cardinals discovered it's always a mistake to underestimate the amount of fight in a Navy cadet. Facing an 11-point deficit midway through he first quarter, Navy fought back to take a two-point lead in the second half before Ball State rallied to win 35-23.


FIELD HOCKEY: Cards drop second game in Maryland

The Ball State University field hockey team lost 4-2 to Bucknell University on Saturday in its second game of the weekend in Owings Mills, Md. The Cardinals fell to 1-3 on the year in a game that was affected by weather from Tropical Storm Hanna. Freshman midfielder Caitlin Maguire scored both goals for Ball State, the first goals of her college career.



BSU gets national attention

U.S. News and World Report ranked Ball State University 14th on its top 70 "Up-and-Coming Colleges" in its latest college listings. "There are tremendous faculty members at this university who are looking to do innovative things to engage students in the learning process," Provost Terry King said.


BSU to unveil capital campaign during halftime

Using the national spotlight as its guide, Ball State University is announcing progress on a new fundraising campaign Friday night. Ball State Bold, a capital campaign totaling about $200 million, is being presented during halftime of the Ball State vs. Navy football game.


FOOTBALL: BSU safety suspended after arrest

A Ball State University football player, who is also the nephew of coach Brady Hoke, was suspended from the team after being arrested last weekend. Safety Kyle Hoke was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and minor consumption Saturday, according to a police report from the Delaware County Sheriff's Office.


FIELD HOCKEY: BSU looks to build on momentum

Three days after returning to Muncie from the Miami University Kick-Off Classic, the Ball State University field hockey team got back on a bus Thursday to travel to Towson, Md., for another two-game weekend. The Cardinals enter today's game with Towson University at 1-1 on the season after the first weekend of play.


OUR VIEW: Cha-ching

Depending on how tonight's football game goes, come halftime, paying attention to what happens on the field might become a bit of a challenge, but you might want to stick around. Don't hesitate to make that mad dash for the restrooms because you couldn't pry yourself away from the game, but if you decide to stay and watch the halftime show, you'll see some people stroll across the turf who aren't in football or marching band uniforms.


FOOTBALL: The edge

OffenseBALL STATE-¡ - Anyone would have trouble finding an aspect the Cardinals' offense could have improved upon from their season-opening performance against Northeastern University. Anyone but coach Brady Hoke, that is. The thought of an offensive unit that posted 48 points on the scoreboard and recorded 487 yards of total offense improving seems crazy.
