Slates face off in final debate before Monday's vote

A debate among executive slates running for Student Government Association on Thursday gave the candidates a chance to answer questions from the audience and ask questions of each other. Unlike the moderated presidential and vice presidential debate Wednesday evening, Thursday's town-hall style debate was a more casual conversation between the three slates.


FOOTBALL: Davis returns to Ball State to prepare for NFL Draft

After leaving Ball State University in January to prepare for the 2009 NFL Draft, Nate Davis has returned to his nest. The former Cardinals quarterback said Tuesday he will return to the Ball State campus to prepare for the draft. He also said he will have his own Pro Day on the campus like the one his former teammates participated in Thursday on an undetermined date.


Survey to improve campus cell phone coverage

Two university services are working together to improve cell phone coverage on campus. Ball State Telephone Services and University Computing Services are using an online survey to collect information about the quality of cellular coverage, according to a press release.


Students encourage expression at National Association of Black Journalists open mic night

The room was quiet as the crowd looked apprehensively toward the darkened stage. Freshman telecommunications major Tiara Thomas walked down the aisle of the lecture hall and sat on a chair with her guitar in hand. She made small talk with the crowd as she readied her instrument, and after a moment she closed her eyes and took a deep breath.



OUR VIEW: Student no-show

The shotgun wedding that has been the Student Government Association election continued Thursday night with an open-to-the-public slate debate. Just one night after the presidential, vice presidential debate all members of all slates were ready to meet the public and address students' questions.


WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards continue quest for MAC West crown in Worthen Arena

After picking up two Mid-American Conference wins on the road in Michigan this past week, the Ball State University women's basketball team returns to Worthen Arena to take on Western Michigan University at 1 p.m. Saturday. Although they beat both Central Michigan University and Eastern Michigan University on the road, coach Kelly Packard said she doesn't think the Cardinals (19-8, 11-2 MAC) are playing their best basketball.



Ball State NAACP gets inducted

The Ball State University chapter of the NAACP was officially inducted into the Youth and College division of the nationally renowned organization Wednesday. The ceremony marked the return of Ball State's chapter after a 15-year hiatus from the university, making the group Indiana Unit No.


BASEBALL: Freshman jumps onto radar screen early

Hiding freshman first baseman Ian Nielsen won't be such an easy task anymore for Ball State University baseball coach Greg Beals. Nielsen hit .588 in his first weekend of college baseball and homered in his first at-bat. He finished the four-game series at Furman University with six RBIs, a 1.

Debate over approachability, interorganization relations and leadership experience drove Wednesday evening's Student Government Association presidential and vice presidential candidates forum. The event, which aired live on WIPB, featured the top candidates from the three competing slates - Cardinal Collaboration, Cardinal Impact and University Coalition.



Facilities go years without inspection

Ball State University dining establishments have been inspected at a lower frequency than preferred, Tony Proudfoot, associate vice president for marketing and communications, said. However student health has never been in danger because of the lack of inspections, he said.


SGA hears plan to cut university spam

Cluttered Ball State University inboxes will soon be relieved of multiple e-mails per day when a new "multichannel communication system" debuts after Spring Break. Tony Proudfoot, associate vice president for marketing and communications, spoke at Wednesday afternoon's Student Government Association meeting to explain how all school-related announcements would be listed in one central location.


TRACK AND FIELD: Williams wins weekly MAC award again

Ball State University track and field athlete Amber Williams was named the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track Athlete of the Week Wednesday. Williams provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet in the 60-meter hurdles at the Ball State Quadrangular on Friday with a winning time of 8.


BEWILDERED SOCIETY: Facebook trends come and go but profiles remain

More than ever before, Facebook is a weapon in the battle for our university's highest student office. This Student Government Association election again solidifies our dependence on the networking site, and our generation's growing acceptance with passive communication, and really odd behavior.


Atrium goers eat in the dark

It's lights out for students eating dinner in the Atrium. The electricity is out in the eating area of the food court in the Art and Journalism Building, but food service and cash registers are still working fine. Atrium General Manger Rod Brooks said the lights go out from time to time, but it is a simple fix.


OUR VIEW: Eat up

It's OK to eat the food. The Star Press reported Saturday the university had gone years without inspecting its dining facilities. This is only partially true, and the school is not putting its students at risk. Ball State University's continual temperature checks for cleanliness and temperature consistencies has kept it in compliance with the Indiana health code.


Who walked away a winner?

1. Michelle Voss University Coalition Vice President Voss was able to bring up successful experiences from her SGA career, such as the smoking ban vote. She spoke articulately and looked like she knew what she was talking about. 2. Alyson Tennant Cardinal Collaboration Vice President Tennant was able to step up when Meeks struggled for answers, especially when Meeks had trouble answering why SGA was important to students.
