SOCCER: Ball State dominant once again

After Friday's 3-0 loss at Central Michigan University, the Ball State University soccer team sat down on its off day Saturday to discuss what led to the program's worst loss in two years. The team discussed needing to take individual responsibility and not playing the blame game during its meeting.

Jones said it didn't matter that Central Michigan University is the two-time defending Mid-American Conference champion. After suffering a 41-20 loss to Ball State on Saturday, the Golden Flashes coach was ready to dub the Cardinals this year's favorite to win the MAC title.


WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards finally break through at Worthen

The Ball State University women's volleyball team won its first conference and home match of the season Saturday night by defeating Mid-American Conference West Division rival Eastern Michigan University 25-20, 25-12, 23-25, 25-13. OUR VIEW: Homecoming hustle

Losing almost a month of preparation time didn't stop the Homecoming Steering Committee from getting the job done. The earlier date for Homecoming left a lot of people irritated. The football game was earlier in the day, forcing students who wanted to go to actually wake up in the morning.



Students share art with kids

The sights and sounds of children will fill the Art and Journalism Building on Saturdays in October and November. Ball State University's Department of Art will have Saturday art classes for local elementary and middle school students in first through sixth grade.


Sorority takes fun approach to philanthropy

Pi Beta Phi sorority will use a tug-of-war, pie eating contests and more to help fight illiteracy as part of this year's philanthropic focus for the sorority. Pi Fest will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday on LaFollette Field. Activities will also include a "Speed Read," a miniature philanthropy contest focused on promoting literacy.

FIELD HOCKEY: Keep counting; losing streak grows

For 70 minutes the Ball State University field hockey team was able to contain Missouri State University and junior forward Melissa Lantz. The Cardinals, though, were unable to win their Mid-American Conference opener in regulation, and keeping the MAC's leading scorer in check proved impossible.

While it's a great idea and would be neat to see on senior night, it's not likely to happen. FOOTBALL: Cards listed at No. 29 in AP Poll

The Ball State University football team received 38 votes and is listed at No. 29 in the newest Associated Press Poll released Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals - receiving 32 more votes than they did last week - moved up nine spots in the weekly poll. Ball State (5-0) defeated Kent State University 41-20 Saturday at Scheumann Stadium.

For many people, the new year starts in January, but for the 15.8 million followers of Judaism worldwide, the new year celebration begins today at sundown. Anne Eliades, president of the congregation at Temple Beth El in Muncie, said the 10 days of Rosh Hashana, the Jewish new year, are also commonly referred to as the 10 Days of Awe or the 10 Days of Repentance.

Costumed teams race down Riverside

Teams of pirates, babies, Quail Men and more hurtled down Riverside Avenue at noon Friday as part of the Homecoming celebration at Ball State University. Sociology major Sarah Austin competed in the Bed Races for the first time as a member of the Park Hall pirates.

Since Michael Lovett was hired as the Ball State University soccer coach in March, he said he has never seen his team with an attitude like it had Friday. "We just played very scared [Friday], which was unfortunate because I think we are a very good team," the first-year coach said of his team's 3-0 loss against Central Michigan University.
