QUESTIONABLE CONUNDRUMS: Computer labs at local school are insufficient

If you're anything like me, you spend most of your time focused intently on your particular field of study. For me, days are full of journalism. I'm at a computer working on various projects at least three-fourths of the time I'm awake. The last two weeks, I've been focused on the Student Government Association election - it seems I'm in the minority of the student body here - the newspaper and my class work.



MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Reporter's notebook

The No. 15 Ball State University men's volleyball team will play Quincy University at 8 p.m. in Quincy, Ill. Below are some news and notes for the match. McCarthy could miss tonight's match With Ball State preparing for almost half of its conference matches in the next 10 days, the playing status of middle attacker Matt McCarthy remains unknown.


Spring Break table raises awareness

Partying, beaches and road trips were common conversation starters Wednesday afternoon as students milled around the Health Education table for Spring Break Safety Week in the Atrium. The Health Education Department wanted to raise awareness about the dangers of alcohol, drugs and unprotected sex while also stressing the importance of partying smart, health education graduate assistant, Jessica Stevens, said.


SOCCER: Team lands 8 recruits for 2009 season

Ball State University soccer coach Michael Lovett announced the signing of eight recruits to national letters of intent Wednesday for the 2009 season. The Cardinals signed midfielder Alyssa Ables from Huntertown; defender/midfielder Maggie Brown from West Chester, Ohio; defender Coco Cammon from New Hope, Minn.


MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards can't keep late lead, lose in OT

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - A deflated Ball State University men's basketball team went into halftime of Wednesday night's game at Western Michigan University down 38-24, outnumbered in just about every statistical category to the Broncos. The Cardinals then came out strong in the second half, outscoring the Broncos 47-33 and forcing the team's first overtime contest of the season but lost momentum in the extra period, losing 84-82 and forcing yet another tie atop the Mid-American Conference West Division standings with Western Michigan heading into both teams' final regular season game on Sunday.



New grant would be used to improve environment

Muncie and Ball State University are partnering to develop a grant proposal to the Environmental Protection Agency that could allocate up to $400,000 to address environmental problems in the city. The Community Action for a Renewed Environment grant is given to organizations to act as a project coordinator that addresses environmental issues, Ball State proposal manager Justin Miller said.

There's adversity, and then there's what the men's and women's basketball teams have faced the past few years. Wednesday night the two teams were in positions to clinch first place in the Mid-American Conference West Division. The men failed but still have a chance.


Campus organizations travel on Spring Break to help those in need

The Revolution For the third consecutive year the Revolution, a Ball State University church community, will take a group of students to do community service in Pass Christian, Miss., close to the New Orleans area. The organization will meet with students from Virginia Tech at the mission and students will help with reconstruction of buildings damaged by Hurricane Katrina.


GYMNASTICS: Well-rested Cardinals travel to Michigan for pair of meets

The Ball State University gymnastics team will head to East Lansing, Mich., Sunday for a 2 p.m. meeting with Michigan State University and the University of California, Berkeley. The Cardinals (3-9, 1-5 Mid-American Conference) enter the meet averaging a team score of 191.



Elections Code needs revisions chair, adviser say

After a slew of controversy and campaigning violations, Student Government Association Elections Chair Marco Pretell-Vazquez said he expects a few changes to the Elections Code before next year's race. He said he would likely suggest changes to newly elected Cardinal Impact and expects them to agree with the proposed changes.


Speaker urges more diplomacy

Foreign policy expert Michael Kraig spoke to about 30 students and faculty Wednesday and told them why policy makers need to rethink American foreign policy. His presentation focused on shifting policy away from a Cold War mentality of putting U.S. enemy into "blocks" instead of trying to keep diplomatic channels open with all countries.


Campus Alliance to help Cardinal Impact take over

Fresh off winning Tuesday's campus-wide election, Cardinal Impact attended its final Student Government Association meeting before taking office. Wednesday's SGA meeting marked the last full Senate hearing for current slate Campus Alliance. Official transitions are after Spring Break at SGA's March 18 meeting.



WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Chirping with a new title

With a 65-54 victory against Northern Illinois University, Ball State (21-8, 13-2 MAC) clinched the MAC West title for the third consecutive year. Ball State will have a first-round bye in the MAC Tournament in Cleveland.


Tha Paper Boiz drop 1st album

Hip-hop group Tha Paper Boiz brings a new energy to the tired Muncie music scene, Village Green Records owner Travis Harvey said. In the past few years, many Muncie musical artists who were doing well have left the city either because they graduated from college or because they simply moved on to bigger and better things, he said.


Friedman talks about book

Thomas Friedman announced that green is the new red, white and blue to a crowd of about 1,350 people Wednesday night at John R. Emens Auditorium. Friedman, a three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author and columnist, was the second speaker in the Bracken Environmental Speaker Series sponsored by the provost and president's office along with Gaylor, Mutual Bank, Old National Bank and STAR Financial Group.


TRACK AND FIELD: Cards take home MAC accolades

The Ball State University track and field team rode home from the Mid-American Conference Championships with two heavy awards weighting down their bus. Cardinals junior Ali Bishel and fifth-year senior Amber Williams collected two out of the possible three honors received at the conclusion of the invitational held in Kent, Ohio, this weekend.
