FOOTBALL: Ball State breaks into BCS at 20

With the release of the initial BCS standings for the 2008 season Sunday, the Ball State University football team achieved another first: a ranking in the BCS standings. The Cardinals (7-0, 3-0 Mid-American Conference) were ranked No. 20 in the first installment of the 2008 BCS standings, a college football ranking system that is used at the end of the regular season to help determine what teams make the biggest bowl games.

FIELD HOCKEY: Cardinals break record losing streak

With time running down on the Ball State University field hockey team's first victory in seven weeks, senior forward Casey Hunsicker went down the line of players left on the bench giving high fives. Hunsicker had one question for her teammates as they snapped their school-record 11-game losing streak.


WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards drop weekend opener to Kent State

The Ball State University women's volleyball team lost 3-2 (23-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-16, 20-18)to Kent State University Friday night in the team's thrilling weekend opener. "Overall for the match, I was pretty pleased with our defensive effort," coach Dave Boos said.


SOCCER: Cards look to rebound, avoid upsets

After a pair of disappointing losses last weekend, the Ball State University soccer team is aware that any team can beat any team on any given weekend. Coach Michael Lovett said he used that lesson this week to ensure that the Cardinals do not take their opponents - Ohio University and the University of Akron - lightly this weekend.



SGA update

Smoking issues and juicycampus.com were main topics of discussion during this week's Student Government Association meeting. During Wednesday's meeting, senators met in their respective caucuses and committees. Below is what they mentioned: Caucus Reports: On Campus: Chairwoman Beth Cahill said they contacted Cathy Bickel, associate director of Housing and Residence Life, who said she did not want suggestion boxes in residence halls because there was not enough space and they would get stolen.


QUESTIONABLE CONUNDRUMS: Apathy all over, but who cares?

One of the best descriptions of personal indifference came from young author Zoe Trope when she wrote "No one cares. Apathy is a disease and some days I long for it." The siren song of laziness is probably dancing on the subconscious fringes of even the most motivated among us, myself included.

Friday, Oct. 17 Doc's Music Hall downtown is featuring Soraia, James Brown Car Alarm and Midwest Hype at 10 p.m. (21+) GRAND OPENING weekend for Doc's on Dill Street. Friday's featured bands include Peterson, Simmons and Dunn, Michael Martin Band, The Blues Funk Project and Jack of Suede.

Leave behind the boredom

Some students don't have any plans for Fall Break. Senior elementary education major Heather Smith lives in Muncie and will work on her days off. But some students' Fall Break will take them outside the community. For Student Volunteer Services President Ashley Ford, traveling outside Muncie to volunteer helps give her another perspective on the world.


McKinley made safer for drivers

Despite an increase in the number of auto accidents on campus, officials and students say the McKinley Safety Improvement Project has made the street safer for drivers. According to police records, auto accidents have increased from 10 years ago. In 1998 the Ball State University Police Department had 13 reported auto accidents on campus, one of them on the section of McKinley Avenue that would be renovated.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: Newell named to Preseason All-MAC team

If not for a nagging foot injury last season, Ball State University men's basketball forward Anthony Newell would have tied for the lead in the Mid-American Conference in scoring and finished second in rebounding. For his performance in the 2007-08 season, however, MAC coaches and members of the news media Wednesday selected Newell to the preseason All-MAC West Division team.


Battle for a cause

A war will wage onstage this weekend in downtown Muncie, but no treaties will be signed. Max Music Wars kicks off at 7 p.m. Saturday at Center Stage, 306 S. Walnut St. The competition will feature four local bands: Ampheon, Gambit's Disciples, Next to Nothing and Nomadic.


Author recounts search for integrity

For author Luis Alberto Urrea, writing is more than a craft. It's more than an art form. As he told a Pruis Hall audience Wednesday night, for him, writing is a way of giving a voice to the voiceless. Urrea said that ever since he was a child, his family used stories to explain the world.

Pi Sigma Epsilon fundraiser promotes mtvU

A Ball State University sales and marketing fraternity has partnered with MTV to promote one of the network's channels on Ball State's campus. Pi Sigma Epsilon fraternity is working with mtvU - MTV's college-focused station broadcasted on channel 54. Fraternity President Emily Muzzy said she was contacted by Clubfunding - an MTV partner that helps college organizations develop fundraisers - about a project to earn money for her organization by promoting mtvU on campus.
