Scenarios recreate life of poverty

The Wiscott family had $1,846 a month in income but had $1,870 of monthly expenses. The grandmother made $9.50 an hour working 40 hours as a cashier. The grandfather received $500 a month in disabilities. The two raised their 9-year-old granddaughter and their recently diagnosed ADHD 7-year-old grandson because the mother was in jail for drug use and the father could not be found.



WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards sweep visiting IPFW

The Ball State University women's volleyball team swept IPFW 25-18, 25-22, 26-24 tonight in Worthen Arena. "I thought we controlled that match pretty well," coach Dave Boos said. "I thought it was a pretty good match for us, overall." The Cardinals (9-14, 4-4 Mid-American Conference) were led by middle blocker Alisha Green and opposite side attacker Elaina Kakatolis.


FOOTBALL: From MAC laughing stock to among the nation's best, all in 4 years

When fifth-year senior Dan Gerberry looks at his younger teammates, he often can't help but flash a grin. Through eight weeks, the freshmen on Ball State University's football team haven't lost a game. The Cardinals' sophomores have a 14-6 career record and shared in the excitement of a bowl game in their first season.

For almost a century, Ball State University has sat isolated on its own island in Muncie. Leaving campus was an adventure seldom journeyed. Building bridges between the university and Muncie has been a goal for the two entities, but often those bridges collapse.



BSU Alumni Association sponsors online events

As Ball State University continues to boast of technological endeavors, the Alumni Association has added to the school's list of cutting-edge efforts. Using Second Life, a virtual world, Ball State is inviting alumni to tour the campus on "Ball State Island," a complete regeneration of the school online including Shafer Tower, Music Instruction Building and Bracken Library.


SOCCER: Offense clicks for Cards

Even with an undefeated weekend, the Ball State University soccer team did not get the production it had hoped for this weekend. The Cardinals (8-7-1, 4-3-1 Mid-American Conference) tied the University of Akron (7-7-1, 2-5-1 MAC) 2-2 Sunday after beating Ohio University (3-9-3, 2-4-2 MAC) 2-0 Friday.


Conference explores open building

Influential figures in the architectural field from around the globe will visit Ball State University's campus this week for an international conference. The College of Architecture and Planning will play host to Education for an Open Architecture, a conference that will feature lectures from professionals, student and professional work in open-ended architecture and an award presentation for an international student contest.


FOOTBALL: Cards try to get youth at Saturday's game

Four days from playing its first home football game as a nationally ranked team, the No. 20 Ball State University football team is making an effort to get the youth to Scheumann Stadium. The athletics department announced Monday it will participate in the Take a Kid to the Game program during Saturday's game against Eastern Michigan University.



SWIMMING AND DIVING: Boilermakers too hot for BSU to handle in pool

Both the Ball State University men's and women's swimming and diving teams took second place Saturday at the Indiana Intercollegiate. Both teams finished behind Purdue University and ahead of the University of Indianapolis and IUPUI in their first multiteam meet of the season.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Attitude needed to kill off Mastodons

The Ball State University women's volleyball team gets a break in its Mid-American Conference schedule tonight when it hosts IPFW at Worthen Arena. The Cardinals (8-14, 4-4 MAC) have lost three straight conference matches and are hoping to get back to their winning ways tonight against the Mastodons.


MEN'S GOLF: Leader of the links

When the Ball State University men's golf team lost five seniors to graduation in the spring of 2007, then sophomore Brian Maurer knew he would be asked to lead the Cardinals the following season. Although Maurer competed in half of the tournaments his sophomore season, he showed enough to coach Mike Fleck that he was ready to be the face of Ball State golf.

As Ball State University students, we are bombarded with projects, papers and tedious homework assignments each and every day. Because of the demand our professors put on us, we often lose touch with reality. In essence, it's hard to put life into perspective when attending college.

Fall Break is over. It gave many of you a chance to go home and let your parents know what you have been up to since this semester started. Midterms also added some excitement to our lives before heading home for the long weekend. For those of you who are new to Ball State University, last week was a time for you to see just how well - or horribly - you were doing in some of your classes.


CROSS COUNTRY: Four Cardinals compete at pre-nationals

Vanessa Gilbert continued to lead the Ball State University cross country team as the Cardinals competed at the 2008 Pre-Nationals Meet at Terre Haute on Saturday. Gilbert, who has led the Cardinals in all four of their races this season, finished with a team-best time of 22:41.


MEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals' duo loses in third round

Sweet Sixteen is not only a term for college basketball; it's now an achievement for Ball State University seniors Jose Perdomo and Jorge Rodriguez in men's tennis. The senior tandem won two matches in the doubles bracket of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional this past weekend in Columbus, Ohio, before being eliminated in the third round.


SOCCER: Cardinals win Friday, tie Sunday

With a beautiful atmosphere and a completely blue sky on Think Pink Weekend, the Ball State University soccer team from Ball State came back home with a 2-0 win against Ohio University. Coming off a pair of losses to Bowling Green State University and the University of Toledo, the Cardinals led their victory by Emily Rein when she scored the first goal early in the game in the fourth minute.


FOOTBALL: Cards ranked No. 20 in BCS standings

The Ball State University football team was ranked No. 20 in the first BCS standings of the season that were released Sunday. The Cardinals were fifth among teams who are not from one of the six BCS conferences - the ACC, Big 12, Big East Big Ten, PAC 10 and SEC.


WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: BSU drops pair of matches

It was the tale of two matches this weekend for the Ball State University women's volleyball team. Friday's battle against Kent State University featured 29 tie scores and 13 lead changes in a 3-2 Ball State loss, while Saturday's 3-0 loss to Ohio University saw seven ties and two lead changes total.
