FM Music to host trash pickup event

FM Music will be hosting a trash pickup day to encourage green efforts on and around Ball State University's campus. The event will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Teams of four to six volunteers should meet at MT Cup in the Village to get an assigned area to canvas.



Ex-student sentenced to 6 months

It started with an argument about a boy, and it ended with a six-month jail sentence. Judge Robert Barnet Jr. sentenced former Ball State University student Amanda Polson, 20, to six months in Delaware County Jail, followed by six months of probation, during a sentencing hearing Thursday.


WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals cancel planned tournament

The Ball State University women's tennis team will not have a tournament this weekend due to the lack of participants. Coach Kathy Bull decided earlier this week to cancel the match scheduled for the weekend due to the withdraw of one of the expected teams, thus concluding the fall season for women's tennis.


WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: BSU predicted to finish first in MAC West

CLEVELAND - For senior guard Porchia Green and the Ball State University women's basketball team, one of the changes from last season are how many "Olga Days" there are during conditioning. "Olga Day" is a team nickname for those workouts new coach Kelly Packard calls "mean, nasty and physical.


Candidates debate at Muncie forum

Democrat Lee Ann Mengelt, District 35 Indiana House candidate, was lonely on stage Thursday night. Her appearance at the Citizens of Delaware County for Property Tax Repeal political forum was a rare sight at the event. She was the only Democrat candidate in attendance.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: 'Road Warriors' set for last regular season weekend road trip

The Ball State University women's volleyball team travels north tonight to play Eastern Michigan University before playing Central Michigan University on Saturday in the team's final regular season road trip of the year. The Cardinals (10-15, 5-5 Mid-American Conference) are 6-3 in true road matches this season, including the 3-2 upset in their last away match on Saturday against 2007 MAC Tournament Champion and East Division-leading Miami University.


Blood road

Off in the cornfields of Delaware County, about 20 miles northeast of campus in the small town of Dunkirk there is a gravel country road known to locals simply as Blood Road. "It's one of the creepiest things I've ever seen," said Ryan Coleman, a high school senior and lifetime resident of Dunkirk.


FIELD HOCKEY: Cards to finish regular season this weekend

With less than one week left before the start of the Mid-American Conference Tournament, the Ball State University field hockey team has two more chances to improve its standing. The Cardinals will visit Central Michigan University on Saturday before heading south Miami University to close out their regular season Sunday.



Fall Fest fills Quad with seasonal fun

University Program Board is giving students alternative activities for Halloween. UPB will have the first Fall Fest in the Quad from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Junior telecommunications major Sam Maples said it will provide a laid back atmosphere where people can go to relax.


MEN'S BASKETBALL: Cards picked to finish 5th

CLEVELAND - Ball State University men's basketball senior forward Anthony Newell doesn't want his team to surprise anyone this season. The 2008 to 2009 Preseason All-Mid-American Conference and 2007 to 2008 Honorable Mention All-MAC selection said his team's goal this year is simple.


U.S. energy future bleak for students

Michael Hicks is a skeptic. He said he hasn't heard a realistic goal to get America off of foreign oil yet. As the Director of the Bureau of Business research at Ball State University and a published author on alternative and traditional energy, he keeps looking - especially to the political arena - to no avail.

FOOTBALL: Having a hand in everything

Trey Buice sprinted from Western Kentucky University's health center, across Avenue of Champions, to Smith Stadium until he heard news that stopped him in his tracks. The doctors told him he had a broken left hand. It required surgery. He had to watch the rest of the game from the sidelines.


Former student receives 6 months in jail

A former Ball State University student will spend six months in jail after she was sentenced Thursday in a beating case from fall 2007. Amanda Polson, 20, received a one-year sentence, six months of which will be on probation after she pleaded guilty to the charge of criminal recklessness resulting in serious bodily injury, a Class D felony.


Four laptops stolen on campus in five days

University Police Department issued a "friendly reminder" to the Ball State University community to keep an eye on personal belongings Wednesday night. UPD sent an e-mail warning that four laptop computers were stolen in the past five days. Director of Public Safety Gene Burton said the department noticed the thefts happened in the same manner, resulting from people leaving the computers unattended in dining halls, study rooms and unlocked dorm rooms.


BASKETBALL: Cards' women predicted to win MAC West

For the third consecutive season, the Ball State University women's basketball team was predicted to win the Mid-American Conference West Division Thursday by the media. The Cardinals received 129 votes in the preseason poll. Northern Illinois University, which was predicted to finish second, received 89 points.


SOCCER: Cardinals beat Miami, advance to MAC tournament

The Ball State University soccer team beat Miami University 1-0 Thursday to secure a spot in the Mid-American Conference tournament. Emily Rein scored the one goal for the Cardinals off a header in the second half. Ball State will play the winner of Thursday's Central Michigan University-Eastern Michigan University game.


DN's weekly awards

Fans choiceNATE DAVIS Receiving 44 votes and 65 percent of the popular vote, quarterback Nate Davis was this week's Fan Choice Player of the Week. Davis had two passing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown in the Cardinals' 38-16 win against Eastern Michigan on Saturday.


SOCCER: Cards start tournament early

Although the Mid-American Conference Tournament does not start until Sunday, the Ball State University soccer team is treating today's game like the tournament has already started. The Cardinals (8-9-1, 4-5-1 MAC) enter today's game against Miami University (6-10-1, 5-5 MAC) fighting to secure a spot in the MAC Tournament.
