Students devote time, money to build bikes that fit their needs

Rebecca Patrick's bike stood out from the rest as she joined friends and fellow cyclists at a Ball State University Cycling Club gathering. Her blue 1972 Schwinn Varsity bike frame's handlebars were wrapped in bright pink tape, a contrast from the black, red and green hues of the other members' bikes.



WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State ends Michigan road trip with split

The Ball State University women's volleyball team remains at .500 in Mid-American Conference play after splitting its weekend road matches by defeating Eastern Michigan University and then losing to Central Michigan University. The Cardinals were able to complete a season sweep of Eastern Michigan in Friday night's 3-1 (28-26, 20-25, 25-20, 25-17) victory.


Ind. has chance of going blue

Ball State University students will be holding their breaths Tuesday to find out if the state will turn blue in this year's Presidential Election. The Hoosier state has not voted Democrat since Lyndon Johnson was elected in 1964. Gary Crawley, assistant professor of political science at Ball State, said there is a logical reason for the tight race in the state this year.

College's numbers increasing

With a student fashion show in the works and an internship at J.C. Penney, Lindsey Holloway said she has spent more time learning out in the job field than in the classroom. Holloway is a senior fashion merchandising major in the College of Applied Sciences and Technology.



CROSS COUNTRY: Miami dominates MAC, Cards finish 11th

Despite four of Ball State University's top five runners turning in season-best performances, the cross country team finished in 11th place at the Mid-American Conference Championship in Ypsilanti, Mich. Saturday. Senior Vanessa Gilbert was the first Cardinal to complete the 3.


Short film to premiere in Letterman

When Danilo Santos graduated from Ball State University in May 2007, he didn't go anywhere. He stayed on to finish his short movie. "Taxy" was the result of Santos', 20 other students' and three Ball State faculty member's efforts over the past year. Santos said he was in New York City in 2006 doing an internship when the idea of producing his own movie occurred to him.


SWIMMING AND DIVING: Cardinals lose conference home opener

The Ball State University women's swimming and diving team lost 11 of 16 events to drop its conference home opener against Bowling Green State University on Friday. Two of the Cardinals' (1-2, 0-2 Mid-American Conference) five wins came from freshman Emily Haifley.


OUR VIEW: Election excuses

There are occasions many Ball State University students feel they must take part in. This year, that includes casting their votes for the candidates of their choice. Many students have embraced the political fervor that has swept the United States in this presidential election, raising their voices over the dull hum of apathy that seems to be the tag on our generation.



SOCCER: BSU knocked out of MAC tourney with loss to CMU

Although its season ended Sunday with a loss in the Mid-American Conference tournament, the Ball State University soccer team was proud of its play in the final game and proud of its season. The Cardinals (9-10-1, 5-5-1 MAC) lost 1-0 to Central Michigan University (12-4-3, 6-2-3 MAC) in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament Sunday.


FOOTBALL: Newfound respect

Brandon Crawford sat in the Atrium trying to steal time for a quick lunch between the classes and football practices that clutter his daily routine. A Ball State University football fan had a different idea. The student walked up to Crawford to tell the defensive captain how much the football team's success meant to him.


FIELD HOCKEY: Struggles now cemented

Needing a win to avoid tying the single-season record for most losses in program history and lock up the fifth seed in the Mid-American Conference Tournament, the Ball State University field hockey team lost twice this weekend. The Cardinals travelled to Central Michigan University on Saturday, losing 4-2, and then finished their regular season Sunday at Miami University, where they lost 5-0.


THE GREAT WHITE HYPE: Condition of BSU softball lacking

Every recruit is different. Every recruit weighs the aspects of a potential school differently. Some consider the quality of the program most important, and others the quality of the education they will get. Two weeks ago I received an e-mail from the parent of a local softball player who, according to him, has the ability to play Division I.



FOOTBALL: Cardinals drop to No. 17 in BCS standings

Despite not playing this week, the Ball State University football team continued to move up in the polls. The Cardinals jumped up two spots to No. 16 in the newest Associated Pres Poll released Sunday afternoon. Ball State received 594 votes - 52 more votes than last week - to move ahead of Brigham Young University and Florida State University.


FIELD HOCKEY: Cards fall to CMU for 15th loss of the season

The Ball State University field hockey team lost 4-2 to Central Michigan University on the road Saturday. Senior defender Jodi Mann scored both goals for the Cardinals who fell to 2-15 and 1-8 in the Mid-American Conference. After Mann opened the scoring 10 minutes into the game, the Chippewas scored four straight goals to win their MAC finale.


SOCCER: Cards advance to tourney

After failing to prove itself in the regular season, the Ball State University soccer team is excited for its second chance in the Mid-American Conference tournament. The Cardinals (9-9-1, 5-5-1 MAC) earned the chance to compete in the postseason with their 1-0 win against Miami University (6-11-1, 5-6 MAC) in the regular season finale Thursday at the Ball State Soccer Field.


More state troopers on patrol for Halloween

Some local law enforcement agencies will step up their efforts around Delaware County for Halloween weekend. Sgt. Rod Russell of Indiana State Police's Redkey district said ISP would send extra units to patrol the streets like it does every year for Halloween.


BSU recreates radio scare

Unlike its original broadcast in 1938, the martian invasion Thursday night at Pruis Hall did not cause a panic. Instead Ball State University students, faculty and members of the Muncie community welcomed the recreation of H.G. Wells' "War of the Worlds.


Elliott Hall to offer haunted ball, a long-running BSU tradition

For the 30th year, Elliott Hall promises scares and surprises on Halloween night. The second annual Haunted Costume Ball will be from 8 p.m. to midnight today with a fee of $3 at the door. All proceeds will go to the Boys and Girls Club. A group of about 10 Elliott Hall residents have met every Thursday for weeks to plan the Ball.
