MEN'S GOLF: Cards finish first at tourney

Despite deteriorating course conditions and dismal weather, the Ball State University men's golf team collected its first tournament victory of the season on Saturday. The Cardinals won the Ball State Cardinal Collegiate after the final round was canceled due to rain.

Shafer Tower namesake dies at 93

Hamer Shafer was humble, but Ball State University dedicated a 150-foot bell tower in his honor. Shafer, who along with his wife, Phyllis, is the namesake of Shafer Tower. He died at age 93 Wednesday in Muncie. The Muncie philanthropist began his career of more than 70 years as the first employee of Muncie Power Products Inc.

'Bubba's place' loses its icon

Chris "Bubba" Smith, the face of Muncie Liquors, died early Tuesday at age 39 from an apparent heart attack, Chris Johnson, Muncie Liquors general manager and Bubba's friend for 21 years, said.

BASEBALL: Cardinals to take on preseason MAC favorite

A year ago, the Ball State University baseball team paid a visit to Mid-American Conference favorite Kent State University and shocked its host with a series sweep. The Golden Flashes visit Ball Diamond this weekend for a three-game series in an attempt to pay back the Cardinals.


Dancer makes a debut

Emma Parker knew it would take courage for a disabled person to participate in the Junior Choreography Showcase. Before Winter Break, she asked the special education department to send out a mass e-mail to students in wheelchairs to star in the dance she has been choreographing.



MEN'S TENNIS: Ball State looks for elusive big win in Boise

The Ball State University men's tennis team will travel west this weekend not in search of gold but in search of a different form of treasure: a win against a quality team. The 8-6 Cardinals have had their way with teams they were expected to beat but haven't beat a quality team all year.


Sorority bowls for charity

Kappa Delta sorority invites Ball State University and the Muncie community to bowl and raise money for VSA arts and Prevent Child Abuse America. The 17th annual Shamrock 'N Bowl will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Clancy's Village Bowl, Lauren Schneider, sorority vice president, said.


Ball State study largest of its kind

A study conducted by Ball State University and Sequent Partners on behalf of Nielson and the Council for Research Excellence dismisses several popular beliefs about video media use. Results of the $3.5 million Video Consuming Mapping study were released Thursday in New York's Life-Time Building.
