Some ignore LaFollette fire alarms

When freshman Christina Vasquez decided to stay the night with friends Tuesday in the Knotts/ Edwards tower of LaFollette Complex, she never expected to be woken up in the early morning hours by screeching fire alarms. In fact, Vasquez was so unsuspecting that when she heard the alarm, she and her friends ignored it for close to 20 minutes before evacuating.



MEN'S BASKETBALL: Shortened bench rotation hampers Cards

INDIANAPOLIS - Hampered by injuries, the shortened bench came up short for Ball State University men's basketball coach Billy Taylor on Wednesday. The Cardinals were missing sophomore forward Malik Perry and freshman guard Randy Davis for the second-straight game to open the season.


BSU employee arrested on intimidation

A Ball State University employee who filed a lawsuit against the university claiming she was harassed and racially discriminated against at work was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of threatening to shoot another employee, police said. Maetta Vance, a University Banquet and Catering employee, was arrested on the charge of intimidation, a Class D felony, after Melissa Rubrecht, director of employee relations, told police that Vance made threatening comments about her, a Ball State Police report said.


Fire forces 1,900 from LaFollette

Hours before classes started Wednesday, almost 2,000 Ball State University students - some in their pajamas or less - found themselves standing out in the chilly air after waking to the blare of fire alarms and public safety personnel banging on doors. As of Wednesday afternoon, Muncie Fire Department was investigating the cause of a fire that began at about 4 a.


Former student remembered

Funeral services for Ball State University freshman Joel Marley were held at Grandstaff-Hentgen cemetery Nov. 5 in Wabash. Marley died at Wabash County Hospital on Oct. 31 from a car accident about a mile South of his hometown of Wabash. Freshman David Perry said Marley was a fun person to be around and was a good man.



FOOTBALL: Notes from the Cardinals' quest for a perfect season

Ball State University has opened the season with 11 straight victories, which is the best start for a Ball State team in the 84 seasons of football at the school.This year's run of 11 straight victories is the fourth-longest winning streak in school history in any sport.


FOOTBALL: Six buses depart for Central Mich.

About 300 Ball State University students will leave on six buses at 2 p.m. Wednesday for the Ball State vs. Central Michigan game in Mount Pleasant, Mich. Student Government Association is sponsoring the buses that cost about $2,000 each, SGA president Frank Hood said.

INDIANAPOLIS - In all-time meeting No. 100 against Butler University, the Ball State University men's basketball team trails the Bulldogs 31-29 at halftime in Hinkle Fieldhouse. Senior forward Anthony Newell has 10 points and six rebounds to lead the way for the Cardinals, while freshman center Jarrod Jones and senior guard Laron Frazier have six points.



Students revive NAACP at Ball State

The Ball State University chapter of the NAACP began a recruitment drive Wednesday in the Art and Journalism Building. Secretary Brent Lyle said after a 15-year absence, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has a chapter at Ball State University.


MEN'S BASKETBALL: Free Agent Wells could take game overseas

Bonzi Wells has played for five NBA teams throughout his 10-year professional career. There is now a chance of the Mid-American Conference's all-time leading scorer taking his game overseas. Publicist Illana Nunn of BDA Sports, who represents Wells, said Monday that Wells is surveying offers from international basketball organizations.

Student wins local airport logo contest

The Delaware County Airport can sport a new logo thanks to a Ball State University student. According to a press release, senior Visual Communications major Samantha McIntire won the design contest for the airport out of a pool of 165 entries. McIntire was awarded with the $500 contest prize at the Airport Authority Board meeting Tuesday.



Collins says couldn't avoid tonight's schedule conflict

When athletics director Tom Collins signed a contract last year agreeing to a men's basketball road game against Butler University, he had no idea of the scheduling conflict that would develop. FOOTBALL: No. 17 Ball State remains undefeated

The No. 17 Ball State University football team defeated Central Michigan University 31-24 tonight in Mount Pleasant, Mich. With the win, the Cardinals (11-0 Mid-American Conference) remain one of five undefeated teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision. In addition, if Ball State beats Western Michigan next week, the Cardinals will advance to the MAC Championship game.


Fire official worried about alarms

A Muncie Fire Department commander expressed concern about the evacuation of LaFollette Complex because the fire alarm had to be manually pulled Wednesday, but Ball State University officials said the evacuation went smoothly and there is no reason to update the alarm system.


Proposal would make instructor evals mandatory at end of courses

The Student Government Association proposed legislation that would give students the chance to find out more about their professors before they sign up for classes. Vice President Carrie Cozad said the legislation, which would implement mandatory, online professor evaluations, must pass through University Senate before it can be approved by the president and the Board of Trustees.
