Students' chimney, attic catch on fire

A house rented by four Ball State University students caught fire after 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. No one was harmed. The flames appeared to be contained to the attic and chimney of the house, located on the corner of Reserve Street and Beechwood Avenue. At the time of printing, the fire was being extinguished and police and firefighters were unable to release information about the extent of damage to the home.


GLBT issues, adoption, partner benefits to be focus of Senator Errington's speech

With the changes involving gay marriage occurring in state legislatures such as Vermont and Iowa, Continuum will present Indiana State Senator Sue Errington, who will address civil rights for the gay community. Errington will discuss legislative issues in the state house that target gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex community and also domestic partner benefits.


MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Starter's status unknown

Fewer than three days before playing its final regular season conference match, the availability of the Ball State University men's volleyball team's all-conference setter remains unknown. Coach Joel Walton said Wednesday that he did not know if setter Ethan Pheister would play in Saturday's match against IPFW because he violated team rules during the weekend.



Man sneaks into art class, takes photo of nude model

An art class was interrupted Thursday when a man slipped in and took a photo of a nude model before fleeing. Ball State University police received a call Thursday afternoon reporting someone ran into a sketching class on the fourth floor of the Art and Journalism Building, used his camera phone to take a picture of a nude model and ran out, Gene Burton, director of public safety, said.

After some horrible weather forced some uncharacteristic scores by the Ball State University women's golf team earlier this week, the team will look to rebound in West Lafayette at the Purdue Ladies Midwest Shootout. The tournament will be Saturday and will consist of two rounds.



Economy woes prompt course revisions in U.S.

Business schools are reconsidering how they prepare students for the responsibility that rests on their shoulders: stabilizing the American economy. Ball State University's Miller College of Business is making small steps in the classroom to address the current economic downturn, but it thinks its teaching methods are good enough to push through the tough times.

Family offers $10,000 for murder info

More than a year has passed since a Ball State University Dining employee was found shot to death in his home, and his family is doing whatever it can to find answers, including offering a $10,000 reward. Garth Rector worked for the university for 26 years in Woodworth Dining Complex and LaFollette Dining before a neighbor of his found him shot to death in his Farmland house after he got home from work March 21, 2008.


Battalion chief: Chimney's poor condition caused fire

A fire that left four Ball State University students homeless and damaged most of their belongings was caused primarily by the chimney's state of disrepair, a Muncie Fire Department official said Thursday. Fire fighters battled a blaze for about 45 minutes late Wednesday at a student-rented house at the corner of Reserve Street and Beechwood Avenue, Battalion Chief Brian Manship said.



State senator discusses GLBT rights

Indiana State Senator Sue Errington enlightened audience members on the action for gay, bisexual, lesbian, transsexual and intersex rights developing in the statehouse this session in her presentation Thursday in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center. Errington, a Democrat, discussed the ins and outs of the legislative process and also her role as author of a bill that would extend hospital visitation rights to same-sex couples.


WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Porchia Green is not selected in WNBA Draft

Former Ball State University women's basketball guard Porchia Green was not selected in the WNBA Draft Thursday. The WNBA Draft lasted three rounds, with 13 picks in each round. Green was not one of the 39 players taken by one of the 13 WNBA teams. WNBA Draft Net projected Green to be selected by the Indiana Fever with the 32nd overall pick.


Prosecutor files armed robbery charge against ex-student

A former Ball State University student could face up to 20 years in prison if he is convicted of the armed robbery charge filed against him Thursday, according to court documents. Chadwic Spencer Nash, 20, was arrested Sunday on suspicion of attempting to rob two cases of beer from the Marathon gas station at the corner of Tillotson and Bethel avenues, according to Muncie police reports.


3 nominated for pro temp

Nominations opened for the third-highest position in Student Government Association at Wednesday's meeting, with three candidates accepting bids to become the next president pro tempore. Off-campus caucus chair Nicole Akey, at-large senator Sara Manwaring and last term's Senator of the Year Michelle Voss earned nominations.


BASEBALL: Ball State looks to carry momentum to wins vs. Bowling Green

After winning four of its last five games, the Ball State University baseball team will visit Bowling Green State University for the weekend, a place where the team has not had much success. All-time, the Cardinals are 13-27-1 in Bowling Green, Ohio, but have not played there since 2004.
