HIPSTER IS THE NEW HIPPIE: Muncie music scene beginning a small revival

I covered the local Muncie music scene for The Daily News' now defunct 72 Hours, and one of the joys of that job was, for a time, there was a lot going on. Interested parties could see one of two fantastic live bands - Everything, Now! or Everthus the Deadbeats - at local venues and house parties nearly every week.

The Ball State University men's basketball team no longer has an unknown opponent in this year's schedule. The Mid-American Conference released the 2009 ESPNU BracketBuster matchups and has the Cardinals paired up with Tennessee Tech University at Worthen Arena on Feb.


MEN'S BASKETBALL: Freshman center Jones named MAC West Player of the Week

Ball State University men's basketball freshman center Jarrod Jones was named Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. The award is the first of Jones's career and the fourth time this season a Ball State player has received this distinction.

Ball State alumnus helps production crew win $1 million

What could be better than watching your football team win the Super Bowl? How about winning $1 million from a 30-second commercial you helped produce? That's exactly what happened to one Ball State University alumnus last night. Franklin Hines, a 2006 TCOM graduate, was a production assistant on the winning crew of the Doritos Crash the Super Bowl 2009 contest.

The Ball State University football team is receiving accolades off the field - although it might not be the type it wants. Ball State leads in the 2009 Fulmer Cup standings, which awards points for college football programs based on charges filed against players during the offseason.

Once every two years, one Ball State student is chosen to serve the university in a way that will change his or her college career in a way unlike any other college experience. Applications for the 2009-10 Student Member of the Board of Trustees can now be picked up at the SGA office or Office of Student Life in the Student Center, and are due back in the Office of Student Life by Feb.


WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Ball State smacks Miami

Although it was the men's 3-point line that was extended this season, Ball State University women's basketball guard Audrey McDonald was shooting from well behind the men's line. And draining her shots. "It was one of those games where it's a great rivalry," McDonald said.


MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Middle attacker wins MIVA award

For the second time in the last three weeks, a member of the No. 13 Ball State University men's volleyball team received a conference award. Middle attacker J.D. Gasparovic was named the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Player of the Week on Monday.

Redbeard the Pirate hopped up and down, wearing only a pair of pants and an eye patch in the six-degree air - he knew his time had come. The pirate brandished his sword high above his head and screamed as he jumped off the plank into the icy waters below. Grant "Redbeard" Yeamans is an intern at Muncie Alliance Church and earned his nickname for his red beard.


MEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals sweep Flyers without Bussert

The Ball State University men's tennis team pounced on the University of Dayton from start to finish, resulting in a 7-0 victory on Saturday. "It was a match where we knew we were heavy favorites based on personnel," coach Bill Richards said. "As far as we want to get out of it, it's just about trying to get better.


Ensemble performs for children

Sounds of marimbas, timpanis, xylophones, drums and other instruments filled the room at the Muncie Children's Museum on Saturday as the Ball State Marimba and Percussion Ensemble played for an audience of children and their families. The ensemble participated in the museum's Music on the Move program, an all-day event for children to learn about and play different instruments.

New technology highlights festival

The lights dimmed and only stereos adorned the stage during the 39th annual New Music Festival at Sursa Hall on Friday night, and the crowd didn't know what to expect. Music focusing on the strengths of new technologies was the focus of the three-day festival, and many said the music that emanated from the stage was far from traditional.


TRACK AND FIELD: Williams leads Cardinals with record-setting performance

With two track invitationals beneath their cleats, the Ball State University track and field team trekked only 36 miles to the Indiana Wesleyan Invitational to continue its indoor season. The trip to Marion proved successful for the Cardinals, who earned first-place finishes in field and track events Saturday.
