Manning, Ball State team up to help kids

INDIANAPOLIS - Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning helped launch a campaign with Ball State University and the Peyton Manning Children's Hospital at St. Vincent on Monday to help fight childhood obesity. The initiative, dubbed Project 18 after Manning's number, aims to teach children in grades three through five how to stay active and make healthy choices.


GOLF: Valpo adds golf teams, could affect Ball State's recruiting

The intrastate rivalry in Div. I golf will get a little bigger this season as Valparaiso University added both a men's and women's golf team. Though Valparaiso is not in the same conference as Ball State University, it can still pose a threat to the team. Ball State women's golf coach Katherine Mowat said Valparaiso's addition will have an affect on her recruiting.


Power soccer club in national tourney this weekend

After training for two hours per week for the last nine months, the Ball State University power soccer team will have a chance to play in a national tournament. In the program's first year, Ball State's team was one of 16 teams selected by the United States Power Soccer Association governing committee to compete in the USPSA National Championship starting Friday in Fishers.



Rep. Pence says no to earmarks despite push by Gora

Ball State University and local officials are not pleased with Republican Congressman Mike Pence's self-imposed ban on earmarks to specific projects in his district. The three Delaware County commissioners, all Democrats, proposed a resolution that will ask Pence to reconsider his stance on this issue.


University to sponsor new charter school in Hammond

Ball State University announced its plans to open new charter schools throughout the state in 2009 and 2010. President Jo Ann Gora approved the new plans for the opening of a charter school in Hammond in 2010 last week. The new school, Hammond Academy for Science and Technology, will be one of three schools opening in 2010.


Theater shows offer something for everyone

The Department of Theatre and Dance has released the list of productions for the 2009-2010 season. The upcoming season offers a wide-range of productions in order to benefit both students and patrons alike. Jennifer Blackmer, managing director and assistant professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance, deliberates with other faculty members for months when deciding what productions to include for a diverse season.

Women's Studies advocates ready for Friday's on-campus protest

Ball State University students, alumni and Muncie community members will gather to protest departmental changes at noon Friday. The protest, which is due to changes to Ball State's Women's Studies Program, will start at the Burkhardt Building and lead to the Administration Building.

This weekend's Relay for Life event at LaFollette Field represented eighteen hours of vigilance in honor and memory of those affected by cancer.


MESSAGES FROM MIA: Pride Festival great Indy event

With the coming of summer, so comes a series of celebrations. Across the nation, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people and supporters of the GLBT community gather to celebrate and relate their love, struggles, pride and hope. In 2009, the festivities began in Phoenix on April 17 and will spread all the way to the East Coast and back again, ending in Palm Springs, Calif.


MEN'S GOLF: Ball State golfer wins local tournament, two others close behind

A trio of members of the Ball State University men's golf team finished among the top competitors at a weekend invitational in Knightstown. Eric Steger won the Indiana Golf Association Public Links Championship Sunday at the Royal Hylands Golf Club. Steger shot a 132 to finish two strokes ahead of the second place finisher.

The time to sing and dance down McKinley Avenue has come for Ball State University students who love their musicals. The Department of Theatre and Dance recently released their schedule for the upcoming school year, which includes productions of "Hair" and "My Fair Lady.


EASTERN MICHIGAN: NCAA gives women's basketball grant in hopes of boasting attendance

Eastern Michigan University's women's basketball team was one of 14 teams in the nation to receive a grant from the NCAA to help increase the team's marketing campaign in hopes of raising attendance. The NCAA gave about $750,000 to the 14 teams and four collegiate conferences to help bring in more fans to women's basketball games.
