Director makes new film 'bloody good'

Ball State University senior Dan Finnen has been more than willing to sacrifice his mental health for his love of filmmaking. "[As] a director you sacrifice your sanity," Finnen said with a laugh. The telecommunications major has made more than 50 short films and two feature length films.



MEN'S GOLF: 2 Cards advance to tourney's round of 8

The Indiana Golf Association Match Play Championship round of 32 includes seven Ball State men's golfers. The event, held at The Trophy Club in Lebanon, Ind., started with a field of 104 golfers and was slimmed down to 32 Tuesday. Of the final 32 golfers remaining in the field, Ball State's Ross Cosat, Joe Gasser, Zac Henderson, Eric Skillman, Eric Steger, Alex Stinson and Zac Treash are included.


New dean has high hopes

As the father of five and grandfather of eight, the new dean of the Teachers College John Jacobson is hoping to prepare his students to make the world a better place for generations to come. "I want to prepare educators who can go out and really make a difference in peoples' lives," Jacobson said.


WOMEN'S GOLF: National rock climbing champ tries new sport

As Autumn Duke descended off her last rock in Scotland at the World Youth Rock Climbing Championships in 2005, she knew an important decision was looming. Since she was nine years old, Duke had devoted herself completely to rock climbing. She navigated the toughest rock faces in the world, even escaping death while suspended 150 feet in the air with no supports.

High schoolers prepare for bassoon recital at Ball State

After four days of practice, 30 high school bassoon players are preparing to perform a recital at Sursa Hall on Saturday. The bassoon, a low-pitched woodwind instrument, is tenor in the oboe family. Susan Stokdyk, Ball State University alumna and fourth-year teacher at the camp, has played the bassoon for 15 years.


SOCCER: Ball State forced to move because new building

After nine seasons, the Ball State University soccer team will be moving from the only home field the program has known. Athletics Director Tom Collins said the soccer team will be moving from the Ball State Soccer Complex to the north end of campus inside the track following the 2009 season.

BASEBALL: Vitek named summer league all-star game MVP

Ball State third baseman Kolbrin Vitek recently won MVP in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League All-Star game in Cincinnati. Vitek, a member of the Lake Erie Monarchs, hit a solo home run in the second inning, earning him the top spot.



Ball State Board of Trustees unanimously approve 3.26 percent tuition increase

The Board of Trustees unanimously approved the university's budget and tuition and fees increase for the upcoming school year on Friday. Tuition and mandatory fees for in-state students will increase 4.4 percent this upcoming school year to $7,830. Out-of-state residents, which paid $19,304 in 2008-09, will tuition and fees increase 5.66 percent this school year to $20,396.


FOOTBALL: Varsity Club to host preseason dinner

The Ball State University Football Varsity Club will host their annual football kickoff dinner Thursday, Aug. 20, at 6 p.m. at the Scheumann Stadium Picnic Area. The upcoming 2009 season for the Cardinals opens on Thurs., Sept. 3, at Scheumann Stadium. Ball State will host the University of North Texas, which will be aired on ESPNU at 7:30 p.


Ball State to bring glass art major to campus

Ball State University's Board of Trustees has approved the construction of a $2 million art glass studio that will be built on an athletic field between Ball Memorial Hospital and Christy Woods. Construction of The Marilyn K. Glick Center for Glass will begin in September and is scheduled to open in the fall of 2010.


6 people wounded after shooting at college in Texas

HOUSTON (AP) - A drive-by shooting at a community rally on the Texas Southern University campus Wednesday night left six people wounded, a school spokeswoman said. Police believe the incident was gang-related.


Never forgetting the past
