MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: How the top 15 have fared

Below is how the teams ranked in the top 15 coaches poll have fared this week. Ball State is listed at No. 16. The Cardinals will play road matches against the Milwaukee School of Engineering at 8 p.m. and Carthage College on Saturday.



LaFollette stinks after sewer backup

LaFollette residents woke up to locked bathrooms this morning because of a flooded basement. Resident Assistant Evan Stall said when he woke up and went to take a shower this morning there was a sign on the bathroom door stating it was closed, and the door was locked.


Pence to hold open house at new office

U.S. Republican Congressman Mike Pence will have an open house 11:30 a.m. Friday at his new Muncie office. Pence, who represents Muncie and Ball State University in his district, has not provided the specifics of the open house. Calls into his press office were not returned.


BSU student wins trip from blood drive

An American Red Cross blood drive at Pruis Hall on Wednesday morning kicked off with a special prize for one donor. The organization awarded nursing major Justin Duncan with a $1,000 Marriott Hotels gift card and a $1,000 American Airlines gift card. "What a Spring Break gift that will be," donor recruitment representative Sharon Rhodes said.



QUESTIONABLE CONUNDRUMS: Slate let down students early in election process

Honesty is a very ambiguous term. Sure, the dictionary might tell you otherwise with its impersonal, black and white explanation of the word. But in practical terms, honesty is much harder to describe. A terribly impressive example of the ambiguity and gray areas came up this week in Student Government Association.


SOFTBALL: BSU ready for new year

OFFENSEAfter graduating two power hitters, the Cardinals have become a team that is based off its speed, coach Craig Nicholson said. The team is going to focus more on utilizing its speed on the bases to score runs rather than driving them in with the long ball.


Treasurer, manager resign from slate

After several days of deliberation the lone slate that attended Monday's Student Government Association nomination convention has announced the resignation of its treasurial candidate and campaign manager. Presidential candidate Beth Cahill said the situation concerning the 400 student signatures required for a slate to run in the SGA election was caused by miscommunication between treasurial candidate Cody Willis and a volunteer with the slate.



Buy a Phi (and buy a house?)

Phi Delta Theta will have a date auction to help Muncie Mission and raise money for its fraternity house fund at 7 p.m. in Rm. 217 of the Art Museum.


Fund requests could go unmet

Ball State University campus organizations seeking university financial support may have to wait until next school year after recent requests swamped the Campus Activities Fund Board. Student Government Association organizational caucus chair Marco Pretell-Vazquez said Wednesday that his committee would review why organizations have recently been turned down for funding because many depend on it.



Kennedy Jr. packs Emens Auditorium

Environmental activist Robert Kennedy Jr. spoke about the financial benefits of natural energy resources Wednesday night to a packed main floor in John R. Emens Auditorium. He told the audience he predicted the use of natural materials would save Americans enough money in gas and utility bills to jump-start the stalling economy.


WOMEN'S TENNIS: Cards lose third straight match

After a two-match winning streak to start off the month of February, the Ball State University women's tennis team dropped its third straight match at the University of Cincinnati. The Bearcats swept Ball State 7-0 at the Western Tennis and Fitness Club in Cincinnati.


MLK Jr. speech transcripts displayed

The Ball State University Truth Movement will explore the untold story of Martin Luther King Jr. from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today in the Atrium. Complete transcripts of King's speeches and threatening government documents labeling him as a "trouble-maker" and a "threat" who needed to be "neutralized" will be on display.


TRACK AND FIELD: Cards' Olympic presence

It starts with a love of shapes. For Ball State University assistant track and field coach Sunder Nix, it is the oval-shaped track. For fifth-year senior Amber Williams, it is the arc formed when she jumps over a hurdle. For head track and field coach Randy Heisler, it is the curve of the discus.


Chili Bowl raises more than $2,100

Chef Jason Reynolds spent more than three hours serving chili in the Atrium Wednesday as about 430 students, faculty and Muncie residents devoured more than 60 pounds. The Ball State University Clay Guild raised about $2,150 with the 2009 Chili Bowl, barely keeping up with customers and resupplying the chili every three to five minutes.


Laugh riot

MoTini's was stretched to its limits Wednesday as students and community members crammed in to judge who among 14 comics had the talent to advance to Rooftop Comedy's regional competition. Every spare piece of floor was turned into a chair as the audience listened to each comic perform a three-minute stand-up act in hopes of being one of the eight selected to move on.
