The lineup of speakers at Ball State University is smaller this year. But, the prominence and value on the schedule make up for whatever disadvantage a lack of numbers poses. Money is tough to come by these days, so student and university organizations found the obvious, but right, solution of pooling their resources to bring somewhat big names to campus to offer their sage-like advice and insight.
Ishmael Beah, author of this year's Freshman Connections book "A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier," will be speaking at 7:30 p.m. today in Emens Auditorium. Beah is from Sierra Leone, where at just 13 years old he was taken by government forces and forced to fight in the army.
A game that led coach Stan Parrish to say Ball State University couldn't run or throw the ball has led to big changes to the offense. At Monday's weekly press conference, Parrish announced that backup quarterback Tanner Justice will likely be used Saturday at Army.
Students dole out big bucks every year to get a college education. Fees increase and, with the recession tightening wallets, many are forced to cut things that at one time seemed necessary. This year, however, various organizations within Ball State University are not cutting the funds they spend to bring in various speakers.
in the '60s, Terri Barnes can still remember her mom's white wool dress with leopard cuffs and collar. It's the only piece in her mom's wardrobe she remembers. "It was very classy and had sort of that Jackie O look," said Barnes, who owns of the Chaos boutique in the Village.
Seeking to cut costs and bring new drugs to market more quickly as its best-sellers go off-patent, drugmaker Eli Lilly & Co. said Monday it will eliminate 5,500 jobs over two years and reorganize into five business units. The Indianapolis company said it will reduce its work force by nearly 14 percent, to 35,000 from the current 40,500, by the end of 2011.
Everyone has irrational fears - those situations or tasks, if given the choice, we'd rather go to class on Saturdays than confront. I know someone who becomes anxious at the thought of touching a newspaper. A friend of mine dreads checking her e-mail on Mondays, anticipating the week's workload.
On Oct. 14, 1960, then Senator John F. Kennedy stood on the steps of the University of Michigan Union at 2 a.m. He was there to sleep, fresh off a long day of campaigning, but he took a moment to speak to the students that had assembled there. In his speech, he asked these able-bodied men and women to serve, not only their own country, but the rest of the world as well.
Line struggles: After not allowing a sack last week to the University of North Texas, Ball State University gave up five in Saturday's 23-16 loss to the University of New Hampshire. Quarterback Kelly Page was on the run much of the night and when he did have time, the Wildcats secondary often had the Cardinals wide receivers covered.
Before I start, let me be explicitly clear that I have absolutely no problems with people wearing or promoting Hollister. What I do have a problem with is that fact that it has become so popular for all the wrong reasons. First of all, I want to make it known that Hollister City - yes, it is an actual city - is not in Southern California.
There will be a rumble in the Jungle on Tuesday night, and it will be for regional bragging rights. The third set was highlighted by 2 consecutive blocks by Elaina Kakatolis and Julie Breivogel to make it 19-13, and a 5-0 run that included 4 straight serves by Brittany McGinnis. IUPUI trailed 24-19, but scored 4 straight to cut the lead to 24-23, but an offensive miscue by the Jaguars gave the Cardinals win.

When thinking of this year's football team, there's one thing we are all thinking: How much worse can it get? A $13.7 million renovation of Scheumann Stadium, a 19-8 record the last two seasons, two consecutive bowl appearances and being nationally ranked last season were supposed to bring a new era to Ball State football, one that included not losing to FCS teams.
As Colts and Jaguars players ran back to the locker rooms at the end of the first half of the Colts' home opener at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday, members of Ball State University's Pride of Mid-America band marched to take the field amid cheering football fans, most clad in blue and white.
Taking care of business isn't always as easy as it may seem; going on the road, playing on a foreign court without the benefit of sleeping in your own bed and having to play three times within 24 hours all present a unique challenge. Despite this challenge, the Ball State University women's volleyball team did take care of business over the weekend, sweeping three opponents in three sets each to win the Best Western Indiana State University Classic.
