OUR VIEW: Cutting and running?

Maybe we were wrong. Maybe Ball State University students shouldn't support its football team. Its coach doesn't seem to have an overwhelming swagger by any means. Stan Parrish thinks it would be best to avoid playing teams in tougher conferences twice in a row, despite bringing in enormous payments.

University of Iowa associate athletic director Mark Abbott said his university had not heard that Ball State University coach Stan Parrish wanted to move the game between the two schools scheduled for next year. The Star Press reported the story Wednesday and later in the day Abbott told The Ball State Daily News he had not heard of Ball State's wishes.


QUESTIONABLE CONUNDRUMS: Lessons to be learned from ACORN scandal

Apparently it's a bad idea for government-funded agencies to give advice about prostitution. Who knew? The United States House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to stop providing funds to ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, on Thursday.

Lab tech charged with Yale grad student's murder

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Raymond Clark III appeared in court and was charged with murder Thursday hours after his arrest in the killing of a graduate student whose body was found stuffed in the wall of the research building where they both worked. Clark, 24, kept his head bowed during the three-minute appearance in the death of Annie Le, also 24.


MEN'S TENNIS: Cards open season against ranked opponents

Most college teams tend to start the season against weaker opponents to give their team a chance to adjust before the big matches. Ball State University's men's tennis team on the other hand will start their fall season against two nationally ranked opponents from the Big Ten Conference.



Homecoming royalty dress as pop culture icons

Ball State University's Homecoming celebrations officially kicked off Wednesday night with an invasion of pop culture icons in the Homecoming Royalty Fashion Show. With this year's Homecoming theme is "Best Week Ever," based off the popular VH1 television show that focuses on pop culture, contestants represented their organizations by dressing up as their favorite duos.


Facebook users climb to 300 million

Facebook Inc. said Tuesday it achieved an important financial milestone, bringing in more money than it spent in the last quarter. The social networking site previously had said it didn't expect to achieve that goal until next year - even though the company already has been valued in the billions.


Ball State charters struggling

Despite a majority of its charter schools finishing below the state average passing rates, Ball State University officials said they will reserve judgment on the schools' 2009 ISTEP+ performance. Ball State's charter schools are public schools sponsored and monitored by the university but are not ran by Ball State.

Muddy tradition continues

Ball State University students have until Monday to turn in team applications for the 22nd annual BotSwin Mud Volleyball tournament on Sept. 26 and 27. Luke Donohoo, Botsford/Swinford residence hall director, said interested students can pick up applications for the tournament from most residence halls' front desks.


Muncie couple arrested for marijuana possession

A Muncie couple was arrested for growing and possession of marijuana Wednesday, according to Indiana State Police. Rita Williams, 57, and Stephen P. Shelton, 61, -- both of 4108 W. 400 South -- were growing marijuana and their residence. The activity was visually confirmed by state troopers from a helicopter.

Homecoming royalty voting on par with previous years

Chanel Richards, publicity spokeswoman for the Homecoming Steering Committee, said 3,638 students participated in royalty voting this year. Up to three votes could be cast for both the student king and student queen candidates, amounting to 24,822 total votes, she said.


FIELD HOCKEY: Cards overpowered in 7-1 MAC-opening loss to Miami

The loss makes for the fourth in a row for Ball State after starting out the season with back-to-back wins against Davidson College and Appalachian State University. The Cardinals are now 2-4 (0-1 Mid-American Conference), while the RedHawks (2-4) hold a 2-0 record in MAC play.


A CLOSE SHAVE: Bandwagon getting lighter as season progresses

Sports fans usually consider themselves a pretty tough bunch. They aggressively slap hands when they're successful, they boisterously yell at officials when they disagree with calls and they can effectively debate their side on just about any argument, no matter what the actual answer may be.
