College of Sciences and Humanities recognizes outstanding women at award ceremony

The College of Sciences and Humanities showcased the hard work and accomplishments of a select group of Indiana women at its 2009 Indiana Women of Achievement awards ceremony."[The awards] are important because we live in a society that still does not give equal credit to men and women for their skills and their accomplishments and their leadership," said Susan Johnson, associate dean of the College of Sciences and Humanities.



State health department cites Dining for 54 sanitation violations

Ball State University's dining facilities received 27 critical violations and 27 noncritical violations according to inspection reports.The Indiana State Department of Health and Ball State environmental specialist Tom Russell inspected five campus dining facilities in September.


Brewfest organizer hopes to bring business to Muncie

More craft beer is bought, sold and drank in Muncie than in any other place in Indiana, making it Indiana's craft beer capital. Muncie will  hold Brewfest 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Horizon Convention Center downtown to celebrate being the craft beer capital of Indiana, fund community enhancement initiatives and bring some business into Muncie. There will be 38 different craft beers at Brewfest from all over the country. Brewers will be coming from as far away as California and New York.


Ball State presents largest live and digital collection of orchids

Ball State boasts the largest collection of orchids, collection of orchid prints and orchid society in North America. Yesterday afternoon, the university hosted a three-part program to display these features to an audience of university officials and orchid enthusiasts from central Indiana. 


Scams target college students, Ball State

Every week at Ball State University, at least one case involving scams aimed at students is presented to Student Legal Services attorney John Connor.Fake checks, online advertisements and credit card fraud are just some of the issues most college campuses are experiencing, Connor said.



MEN'S TENNIS: Diversity thrives for doubles tandems

The Ball State men's tennis team consists of players from United States, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, Mexico and South Africa. That sounds more like a group of countries in the World Cup then the nationalities of typical Ball State students.


Breaking bad habits

Senior nursing major Brittany Bower is trying to cut out coffee and get in eight hours of sleep each night. She's also hoping to get to the gym three to five times a week. For Bower, and most other college students, these goals can be hard to accomplish, especially during a time like midterms.

Downtown deli offers more organic options

Dave Ring, co-owner of the Downtown Farm Stand, always knew what the next step for his organic grocery store would be: a deli. The Downtown Farm Stand opened in Muncie in May 2007. The local store offers 100 percent organic and sustainable food and cosmetic items. Ring said opening a deli was always in the original business plan, but he didn't want to rush into things.



OUR VIEW: It's getting closer

 One of Ball State University's neighbors got sick this week. It told everyone it has an "influenza-like illness." Assuming the absolute worst, 113 students who were absent Tuesday out of the 562 students at Burris Laboratory School have swine flu. More than likely that's not the case but it wouldn't be an absurd bet to say a good portion of those students has swine flu. 


CALIFORNIA KIRCHUBEL: Winter weather coming fast

 When I woke up Monday and checked the news for the weather as I always do in the morning, I saw something so frightening and horrible it made my skin crawl. No, it wasn't that Tom Brady threw five touchdown passes in one quarter in the New England Patriots 59-0 destruction of the Tennessee Titans nor was it the disturbing story of how the aptly named ‘balloon boy' ordeal was a hoax. It was the fact that the high temperature for the day was a brisk 59 degrees.  



Members of CRU agree with Tyler

Around Ball State campus the last week, there have been flyers that say, "I agree with Tyler." Tonight Tyler will reveal himself to talk about his faith.Campus Crusade for Christ (CRU) is hosting the event "I agree with Tyler" in Pruis Hall at 8:00 p.m.


Eating through stress

Midterms often add extra stress on students, which sometimes turns into extra pounds. Stress from trying to balance classes and tests sometimes trigger bad eating habits with students during midterm week, Ball State University health educator Julie Sturek said. Stress eating is a response to a positive or negative arousal, she said, and some students may see midterms as a negative. 


MEN'S GOLF: Cards win Flyer Invitational

Trailing by seven strokes, the men's golf team only had 18 holes to defeat then-leader University of Toledo. By shooting 12 strokes less than Toledo in the final round on Tuesday, Ball State won its first tournament of the Fall season.


FOOTBALL: Page to have season ending surgery on thumb

The quest for Ball State University's first win this year will have to continue without starting quarterback Kelly Page.Coach Stan Parrish said Tuesday that Page would miss the final five games of the season with a broken right thumb. The injury will require surgery that will keep the redshirt freshman out of action for two to six weeks.
