Hackers compromise Ball State server

University Computing Services said that a hacker breached a university server and defaced student and faculty web pages. The intrusion happened early Monday morning and was announced in a campuswide e-mail Tuesday afternoon. The server hosted some iWeb accounts, individual Web hosting accounts for the university community, said Kevin Gingerich, security group leader for UCS.



BASEBALL: No. 2 seed Ball State falls in first round to EMU

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio- In a day full of upsets at the Mid-American Conference Baseball Tournament, second-seeded Ball State University fell to Eastern Michigan University 19-16. The Eagles, the seventh seed, defeated the Cardinals for the third time in four meetings and dropped Ball State into the losers' bracket.


SOFTBALL: Milian uses faith to find humility

When many people win major awards, they like to display them for everyone to see, but that's not Elizabeth Milian's style. Ball State University softball team's ace pitcher won many awards this season, including Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Year, MAC West Pitcher of the Week three times, a first team All-MAC selection, the Nan Harvey Sports Woman of the Year Award.


University study shows Indiana tourism increase

A Ball State University study has good news and bad news about the condition of Indiana's tourism industry. The study, "Cultural Tourism in Indiana: The Impact and Clustering of the Arts and Creative Activities in this Recession," was conducted by the Center for Business and Economic Research.


SIZE MATTERS: New exhibit showcases beauty of art

However, in the Ball State University Art Museum's newest exhibit, "A Matter of Size," it is proven that the smallest can have an equally powerful impact as the biggest. Ball State extends lunch to 4:29 p.m.

Students who have the luxury of buying meals on campus with meal cards will now have the added comfort of an additional hour for lunch. Ball State University Dining Services extended the lunch meal period from 3:29 p.m. to 4:29 p.m. starting this week. Elizabeth Poore, assistant director of operations, said this change will be a permanent one.


Hacker defaces iWeb accounts

Ball State University announced Tuesday afternoon that a Ball State server was hacked into early this week and some Web pages on iWeb accounts were defaced.



BSU takes national award

A recent Ball State graduate won a national award from the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival for her lighting design in a play performed in Strother Theatre last fall. Marciel Greene won the Barbizon Award for Excellence in Lighting Design from the American College Theater Festival, after graduating in May with a bachelor's degree in theatre with a design and technology option.


Grads receive award for commitment to Ball State

The Ball State University Alumni Association recognized eight graduates as 2009 recipients of the Graduate of the Last Decade (G.O.L.D.) Award. This award is presented to alumni who have shown exemplary personal and professional achievement, community involvement and a commitment to Ball State in the ten years since graduating.

New dean appointed to college

The longest active dean on campus is stepping down from his position and will be replaced beginning July 1. John Jacobson was named the Dean of Teachers College on Friday, replacing Roy Weaver, who has worked as dean for the past 16 years at Ball State University.



'Voice of the Cardinals' selected to Hall of Fame

The long time voice of the Cardinals will be inducted into the Indiana Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in October. Morry Mannies has been the Ball State University play-by-play announcer for men's basketball and football since his freshman year at Ball State in 1956 and was named an inductee to the hall of fame last week.

OK, we know this is probably not how you would want to spend a summer. Rather than returning to your warm bed at home, going to a foreign country or even relaxing somewhere on a beach, you get to spend the summer at Ball State - where the closest thing there is to a beach are the sand volleyball courts by Noyer Complex.


BASEBALL: Cardinals clinch MAC West

The entire Mid-American Conference baseball season came down to a three-game series for Ball State University. Trailing the University of Toledo by one game, the Cardinals played host to the Rockets on the final weekend of the regular season. The winner of the series would take the MAC-West crown and the two seed in the MAC Tournament.


TRACK AND FIELD: Ball State finishes sixth in conference

The Ball State University women's track and field team ended its season with a sixth place finish in the 2009 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Akron this weekend. Host Akron won the meet with 147 points.


Students leave pets in Muncie

While away at college, many students find comfort and companionship in owning a pet. But for some, the commitment to their animals only lasts as long as the school year. During this time of the year, the Muncie Animal Shelter has an increase in the number of pets being abandoned either at the shelter or on the street, Julie Smith, office manager for the shelter, said.
