THINK TO EXIST: Worry Less, enjoy each day more

Three years ago on August 21, 2006, I began my first day as a student at Ball State University. I woke up at 6:30 a.m., leaving myself an hour to sit alone in the Cooper Science Building waiting for my Astronomy 100 class to start. Although I arrived to my first class a tad bit early, I took the time to ponder what my college experience would be like.

SCENE SELECTION: 'Inglorious Basterds' fails to reach potential

Welcome to Scene Selection, your weekly look at films in theaters and maybe out of theaters. I try to find a film worth seeing each week, and let you know all about it. There is so much to say about any film, but I attempt to avoid spoilers as much as possible; so enjoy.

People are starting to take a little more notice of the Ball State University football team this year. An event-record 1,766 people walked around Scheumann Stadium on Sunday afternoon meeting this year's Cardinals' football team at Ball State's Fan Jam. The Fan Jam - an annual event hosted by the athletics department for about five years - gave people the chance to meet and interact with the Ball State players and coaches.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State ready for another crack at top teams

Storm clouds may be gathering over the Mid-American Conference's volleyball landscape, but the sun is shining brightly over Ball State University's youthful, but experienced, team. After weathering the storm the last two seasons, coach Dave Boos feels the time is now to become a factor in the championship picture.

FOOTBALL: Parrish not alone as new head coach in the MAC

DETROIT - With a new commissioner and five new football coaches in the Mid-American Conference, this year's media day could have been marketed as a meet-and-greet. Jon Steinbrecher took over at the helm of the conference from Rick Chryst in March, after the last of five new coaches was hired in the conference.

Ball State professors become Boy Scout leaders

This summer, three Ball State University professors traded in their gradebooks for binoculars. They took 10 boys, ages 13 to 17, from the Muncie Boy Scout Troop 22 on a week-long trip to Michigan's Isle Royale National Park, which is only accessible by boat or seaplane.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: The DN is changing for you

Change has come to The Ball State Daily News. You may not see it right away in this issue or in an issue next week. However, let me reassure you things are changing for the better at this national award-winning newspaper. My name is Vinnie Lopes, and I am the editor in chief of the Daily News.

FIELD HOCKEY: Cardinals look to improve after dreadful 2008 season

After a 2-17 season in 2008, the future looks bright for the Ball State University women's field hockey team in 2009. The teams' two seniors, Tiffany Shifflett and Brooke MacGillivary, will lead a combined 14 juniors and sophomores to make up a deep and experienced team.

CROSS COUNTRY: Coach says Ball State has good chance to win MAC title

After losing just one senior, Vanessa Gilbert, from last year's squad, the Ball State University cross country team is gearing up for another shot at the Mid-American Conference championship this fall. Placing 11th at last year's championship, the Cardinals are looking to rebound and put in a much better finish this year.

Ball State opens new study abroad program in Costa Rica

Ball State University's newest study abroad program, the Costa Rica Centre, is recruiting for the Spring Semester. Jim Coffin, director of the Rinker Center for International Programs, said the decision to start a center in Costa Rica stemmed from the university's existing centera programs in London and Australia, which are the most popular study abroad options.

FOOTBALL: Ball State's Lewis, Kent State's Jarvis vie to be best MAC running back

DETROIT - The Mid-American Conference is dominated by quarterbacks and has been for more than a decade. The phrase "quarterback league" was thrown around at MAC Media Day about as often as "we're taking it one game at a time," but for good reason. The list of signal callers to come out of the MAC in the last 10 years reads like an NFL draft board: Chad Pennington, Byron Leftwich, Charlie Frye, Ben Roethlisberger, Nate Davis, Dan LeFevour.

"If you want a good art scene, you have to just do it." Those words inspired senior studio art major Adam Huston to open his own nonprofit art gallery in his living room this past summer. The idea first came to him during the spring when artist Dina Sherman of Columbus, Ohio, came to speak at the Ball State.
